Selling engines and other components to other automakers is part of BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer’s Number One strategic plan to boost the carmaker’s profitability. I agree wholeheartedly, the Bimmer I6 is incredible. Smooth as silk, it would only better the GM lineup, aside from the incredibly high repair costs. It will be quite common in future.....nothing unusual....economy of scale...
BTW - i agree with BMW I6 - it is incredible! BamaCaddy08 04-13-08, 09:27 PM I think it would be a huge negative to Cadillac. BMW's are wonderful but Cadillac needs to work on getting themselves on the same level through genuine engineering advancements and quality not through purchasing. Plus I dont want a BMW I6, I want a Cadillac. Good god.
Dear Cadillac,
Just build an engine already.
Sincerely,
Jim C

Totally agree on that statement. I have a newer 3-series as well, and the BMW I-6 mated with the GM 6-speed is smoother than our 05 CTS with 3.6 VVT. My Bimmer has a 5-speed GM automatic. Its a solid unit that works well.
It would be smart for Cadillac to outsource a V12 for low-production models. cklemmer 04-15-08, 05:17 AM Similar to the V12, with GM killing the Northstar V8, it could make sense to use a BMW V8 in larger Cadillacs. The various LS1 derivative V8s are great engines, but if they wanted more refinement without engineering their own engine, this would be a nice route. BMW I6=disgustingly overrated concorso 04-24-08, 07:46 PM BMW I6=disgustingly overratedYea, that! If I need a smooth ride, Ive got my gf.
The BMW I6 is nice, but its torqueless. The only reason its soo peppy is smart choice of gears and a light vehicle. That engine would never fly in a CTS...
The 3.0L twin-turbo sounds good to me tho...
Id really like to try their bi-turbo diesel in the 530d...
Cadillac and BMW still working on hydrogen powertrains together? If Cadillac wants to become a player in the world luxury sport market then they have to do it on their own. They tried adding a European flavor years ago with the Allante and it bombed. Cadillac has to make it on their own as an American luxury sports car. If Cadillac makes a car and puts a BMW engine in it then people are going to say why should I buy a car from a company that buys engines from BMW, I might as well buy a BMW. greyghost04 04-24-08, 08:44 PM If Cadillac wants to become a player in the world luxury sport market then they have to do it on their own. Well probably price. All European cars are going thru the roof on price. The falling dollar is killing them. Audi A4's for $50,000. You would have to be an idiot.:cookoo: A BMW V8 or V12 would be great for cadillac although the repair costs might be astonomical.
Cadillacs image would take a huge leap upward with a BIMMER motor as far as the snob set would see..
I personally prefer the LSA motor going into the CTS V but then I'm decidely biased toward performance and american ingenuity. (SP) I think it would be a huge negative to Cadillac. Well said ! Rick Wagoneer , Bob Lutz and other GM brass please listen. If your intentions are to get Cadillac to the " Standard of the World" again then you cannot be making the most important feature of the car a BMW " transplant" ! GM should be more then capable of building a world class engine that is better then anything from Germany or Japan. Hold on to the vison of recapturing GM/Cadillac as thee number one auto maker in the world. There is NO reason why , ( even in the global economy we are in) that an "All American" car company can dominate the industry.
If GM loses that vision I will just go and purchase a bimmer !!! :worship: Well said ! Rick Wagoneer , Bob Lutz and other GM brass please listen. If it makes sense for GM to source the engine from BMW, I say go for it. It's not like they'd take a stock 3er engine and put it in Caddy anyway. The engine is just one component to performance. There is a lot more going on than just raw HP.
Our cost to produce stuff in the US is outragous. I'm not sure that Germany is any better, but I doubt that GM can truely dominate teh industry with our current tax and union structures. Can they produce a quality car, I would hope so... but they have a lot of ground to cover and a lot of "expenses" that other other imports makers don't have. Add that to the damaged reputation US car makers already have in the quality market, and I wouldn't be betting on any US car maker to dominate the industry any time soon. It's one thing to outsource say, a radio. It's another to outsource your POWERTRAIN. I know GM has done it before (90's ZR-1 with the Mercury Marine engine being the most poignant example.)
I think it would be okay for Cadillac to outsource engines from a manufacturer outside the main automotive industry. To get them from a competitor, especially BMW, would be an iconic mistake.
And I don't care how good BMW engines are (I know they are very good); they ARE NOT God's gift to automotivedom the way folks think they are. They are good engines, and that is all.
Motor Trend, Road & Track, and Car And Driver can all kiss my big fat American ass. Well, I can see you point of view is a fixed one.... too bad.
American car makers aren't having such a good time finacially right now. Maybe they see more logic in out sourcing the engine to a company well know for it's engine then they do in deeloping a new enigine under their name.
Anyway, as I said before... the charater of the car comes from much more than the engine alone.
BTW, I have a 2006 3er BMW and it is one of the finest cars I've ever driven. In performance and they way it handles it is a good bit ahead of the Caddy; however, the new design of the Caddy puts it back in the playing grounds and is a great step forward for GM. I even feel the feature list and interior design are years ahead of BMW (one of my biggest grips about BMW) which is why I own a 2008 CTS and drive it every day.
I hope GM can continue to progress and gain market share and build on the momentum the CTS as given them. I definetly think they can get there... but it might require some out of the box thinking, like using a BMW made engine. I have not driven a recent 3-series, but I drove one many years back. I admit it was nice and handled well, but not worthy of the deity-like status the car mags endow it with. My Saturn SC back then had better handling. And those late 90s 3-series were supposedly better balanced than today's heavier 3-series. I have not driven a recent 3-series, but I drove one many years back. And those late 90s 3-series were supposedly better balanced than today's heavier 3-series.Yeah... the mags love them a bit more than maybe they should, but I do think it's the best driving car I've ever owned (I can't speak to earlier models as I've only owned the 2006). Here in Atlanta, 3er's are common day, so I never thought of it as a snobby car. Every third car on the road is a BMW of some sort. Even the 760Li's are seen on a daily basis.
I get a lot more questions and looks driving my CTS than I ever did in my BMW. Getting it washed at the car was or filling up at the gas station, there is always someone that will start asking me questions about the car. I even get parked in the VIP up front vallet when I go downtown to eat... the 3er was always put in the back. :)
Even if GM goes with the BMW engines, I'm sure they'll still find ways to make sure that a Caddy is still a Caddy. greyghost04 04-28-08, 07:34 PM I wish I could give my car to a valet. My OCD won't allow it! | |
