View Full Version : Thunder gray question............. Pete Benson 04-12-08, 04:08 PM Could someone please explain to me what the big deal is with Thunder Gray Chromaflair??
I thought it was one of those colors which "change" depending on the light and angle, but the other day I was checking out a new CTS in that color that was sitting in full sunlight on one side and some shade on the other, and the color was exactly the same regardless of light and angle - it was completely uniform all around, and looked just like the old Academy Gray that Cadillac has had off and on for years.
Exactly what is it about this color that is supposed to make it special (not to mention optional at extra cost)??? Southern 04-12-08, 04:38 PM Look in the pix thread.......this is just one picture of the Thunder Gary Chromaflair from that thread
.
Note: They didn't REALLY make a car with gray fenders and black hood.....that's just what the lighting does to Chromaflair. ngiardina 04-12-08, 07:44 PM It was cool enough for me, Southern. I agree.
Proud papa. synergy408 04-13-08, 07:53 AM I have a Thunder Grey and the color does appear to change in different lighting. Sometimes it looks a bit green, other times it looks blue. It's a great color IMO. ajm0623 04-13-08, 07:59 AM really a terrific color. it catches your eye and makes you do a double take - at least is does me every time i see one on the road. just oozes class! I have a thunder gray CTS and my car shifts colors to the point that it does not look like the same car its that dramatic under certain light conditions. My favorite is under street light conditions it is spectacular. ddawson 04-13-08, 09:31 AM Could someone please explain to me what the big deal is with Thunder Gray Chromaflair??

There will be times, when you park and leave it for a while and come back, you will not reconize it. It is sometimes that dramatic. Pete Benson 04-13-08, 02:45 PM Thanks for all the responses. I guess I must be selectively blind - no matter how I looked at the one I saw locally, including different angles, exposures, even heights (there was a ladder nearby), there was no apparent change in the color. ngiardina 04-13-08, 02:49 PM Thanks for all the responses. Not being a jerk... are you slightly color blind, or did you convince yourself ahead of time that it wasn't worth $995 extra. The brain can play funny tricks. I love this color....this is the color I am getting w/ the grey interior.......its in and i saw it and i loved it. Excuse me, but what the hell is YOUR problem? All I was doing was asking a question, and a wise-ass remark like yours is not my idea of a helpful response.
I couldn't care less about a lousy thousand bucks for a color if I can see what's special about it. Old thought it is, I can see why White Diamond costs extra. Hell, I'd even pay it for Crystal Red Tintcoat -which there's not even a surcharge for - because I think it looks spectacular. I'd absolutely pay it for Hot Lava if I didn't have take the black interior and the wood trim.
All I can say is, with the CTS I saw in Thunder Gray, in that particular place and time and light - nothing was happening. I dunno, maybe you have to drive the thing around to different places and at different times and light conditions..............whatever. ngiardina 04-13-08, 05:07 PM Excuse me, but what the hell is YOUR problem? I swear to you I wasn't trying to be rude. I was simply asking a question. I talked myself out of White Diamond because I was convinced ahead of time that it always looked dirty.
The color blind comment was also real, people who are red green colorblind have a particularly hard time seeing color shifting paint jobs Pete Benson 04-13-08, 06:47 PM I swear to you I wasn't trying to be rude. No problem, I overreacted - sorry for that. Just for the record I'm not colorblind either (as far as I know). Maybe once I actually see a Thunder Gray Chromaflair out on the road I'll be able to "get" what it's all about. spaceman78 04-13-08, 07:02 PM color blind wow ********* ngiardina 04-13-08, 07:59 PM I was really serious, didn't mean to come off as an a**hole. Don't give it a thought. Actually, after re-reading my response to your post, I'M the one who comes off as an a**hole...........lol CopperSunburstCTS 04-13-08, 11:09 PM The color is VERY subtle, those who know what to look for are those who usuually have it. The posters comments are valid, it isnt very dramatic like some other color changing colors are. It looks like a very dark grey with a tint coat of yellow/gold, which makes it look slightly green/blue in some lights and angles. But like the original poster, I would have loved to pay extra for something really special and new. The Hot Lava is exciting, and a color typically used for concept cars, but its becoming less unique as more and more car companies offre some version of the mettalic orange. I just wish Caddy wouldnt have forced the monotone Black interior. It woudl have been my idea of perfect if it had the warm and inviting 2-tone Chamere/Cocoa. I was waiting for the new 2009 colors and now that they are anounced i am soooooo sad to see Cadillac dropped the ball, no medium or light colorfull metallics, just another dark blue and dark metallic black. This is a great car with great lines and buldges in need of some medium or light metallic colors to show it off. It does look greta in some of the standard colors, but for those of us that dont want the stanrd everyday colors, there isnt much. No medium grey, amber, blue, green, orange (not as a special edition) etc,. It makes me almost want to wait for the Coupe now, which looks great in the ordinary silver becasue of all the sharp angled ground effects that reflect the light. Just my opinion Southern 04-13-08, 11:46 PM I am very satisfied with my color, but I am gobsmacked (as the brits say) that there is no green cadillac CTS.............. Cadillac Tony 04-14-08, 10:06 AM Interesting factoid for you Thunder Gray owners:
The "Chromaflair" pigment that they mention is a Trademark of the JDS Uniphase Corp. They use the same Chromaflair pigment on the new US Currency- take a 20, 50 or 100 out into the sunlight and look at the number in the lower right corner turn Red/Gold/Green as you tilt the bill. Chromaflair.
Now you can tell everyone your car is painted with money. mkaresh 04-14-08, 10:19 AM The color is VERY subtle, those who know what to look for are those who usuually have it. I'd say the same. This isn't like a change from green to purple. It's more subtle than that. I also agree that the paint choices overall could be much more interesting. Most are basic and boring. ngiardina 04-14-08, 11:01 AM Interesting factoid for you Thunder Gray owners:

That's what I'm talking about! My car is painted "Moneyflair" Pete Benson 04-14-08, 08:37 PM I am very satisfied with my color, but I am gobsmacked (as the brits say) that there is no green cadillac CTS..............
You can say that again. Cadillac has had some fantastic greens down the years, especially during the sixties.
Carrara Green from 1960 (Eldorados only), Frost Green from '63, Crystal Firemist and Tropic Green Firemist from '66 and '67, Monterey Green Firemist from '68 all come to mind, and who can forget the eyeball-incinerating Nottingham Green Firemist from 1970 - so intense it must have been visible from Mars. In 1971 - and ordered by maybe three people - Pewter Firemist was available, silver with an icy green overlay, very subtle but gorgeous.
Those were the days............... The Tony Show 04-14-08, 09:52 PM Sequoia and Silver Green both bombed on the 2003-2007 CTS- nobody bought them. mkaresh 04-14-08, 11:05 PM Sequoia and Silver Green both bombed on the 2003-2007 CTS- nobody bought them.
Silver green probably wasn't the green people here are looking for. I'm guessing it was, well, silverish.
What shade was the Sequoia? I don't recall ever seeing a dark green CTS. But maybe that's because nobody bought them? :) Southern 04-14-08, 11:36 PM As michael says...there are greens and there are greens....
I rather like this one.......... mkaresh 04-15-08, 10:40 AM Actually, that's a somewhat silverish green. I think I remember a similar but lighter shade on the CTS now. I asked my dealer the same question and got some lame answer. Although I liked all the premium colors I didn't like paying $1,000 more for normal paint in a popular color.
Fortunately, all the premium colors do have something special about them. The only place where I found any reasonable explanation was in the back of the 2009 Brochure where it shows the colors.
For instance, I believe the red has a tinted clearcoat and the new blue is a special tri-coat. Of course, everyone knows Thunder Gray is the Best!:cool2:
