View Full Version : They're charging extra for 5/9 colors in 2009???!!! bryson17 04-12-08, 12:50 PM http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g249/bryson17/Picture1.png
This is ridiculous. Although, I bet a lot of people will order black ice. I'm assuming it's some sort of special shinier black.

aside, i was slightly disappointed to see that "blue chip" (navy blue) was being replaced with "blue diamond" as it looks nothing like navy blue and more like a dark robin egg's blue. could be the resoultion of the picture, i guess, but with that change, there is no navy blue offering any more. however there now appears to be two versions of black. i guess i need to rethink my color choice. maybe black cherry! CopperSunburstCTS 04-13-08, 11:27 PM I saw the actual dealers color display for the Blue Diamond, its a late 2008 DTS color i believe, it looks basically like the standard dark blue but with golden tinted widely scattered spaced metallic flakes. It may be one of those colors that looks like there is pollen on your car. And the original poster is right, it IS really ridicullous to charge extra for so many colors. And the color palette is so limited. Remember the days when chosing a color was an exciting decision, and you had not just one each of the basic colors, liek blue, grreen, red, but several differnt shades or darknesses of those colors, AND a bunch of other creative colors to choose from, AND none of them were extra cost! Frank Rizzo 04-14-08, 12:58 AM Can anyone shed some light on what "Blue Diamond" looks like ?? Me hopes it's still dark.
At least you can now get a blue exterior with a black interior. PygmySurfer 04-14-08, 09:52 AM At least you can now get a blue exterior with a black interior.
What do you mean, I have a Blue Chip exterior with Ebony Interior

This is the example of Blue Diamond on the GM website:

Doesn't look as dark - would need to see it in person to judge it. Almost reminds me of the blue I've seen on some Saturn Vues around here. ngiardina 04-14-08, 09:55 AM Can anyone shed some light on what "Blue Diamond" looks like ?? Me hopes it's still dark.

Blue diamond is absolutely gorgeous. One shade lighter than Blue Chip with a lot of silver metallic in it, finished off with a pearlescent topcoat. Search for posts from me, I put up a picture of the color chip. Difficult to tell, but nonetheless striking. Cadillac Tony 04-14-08, 10:00 AM The Blue Diamond is still dark, but the flake makes it a little brighter than Blue Chip. The Black Ice has been offered on the 2008 DTS, and it's pretty sharp- I think it'll look really good on a CTS.
Mercedes Benz started doing this a few years ago as well. there is a premium/extra charge for all colors - ALL colors! - except black or white.
^ Correct. Tricoat or Tintcoat finishes look a lot deeper and have more flake than a regular metallic, but cost more. mkaresh 04-14-08, 10:28 AM When my father was deciding on a color, we both wished there were a more dramatic blue available. He ended up with the Thunder Gray. But if the Blue Diamond had been available, he probably would have gone that way instead.
The simply need to make more colors available. I'd like to see another red a few shades darker than the current one, for example. ngiardina 04-14-08, 11:02 AM When my father was deciding on a color, we both wished there were a more dramatic blue available. Same situation as me. Wanted a dramatic blue, went with TG! Frank Rizzo 04-15-08, 12:19 AM What do you mean, I have a Blue Chip exterior with Ebony Interior
How'd you do THAT???
It's not allowed in the dealer display, or the brochure !!!!!!!!!!
:eek::eek: WhtDmnd04CTS 04-15-08, 12:36 AM he's from canada
apparently they allow the ebony/blue chip combo
i wish they allowed it here mkaresh 04-15-08, 10:43 AM Yep. This first came up a few months ago. If this is the same person as before, he's essentially showing off this time around. He knows he's showing Americans something they can't get. "Nah nah nah nah nah, you can't have this!" gsearles 04-15-08, 02:30 PM he's from canada

Yeah, we also allow marijuana for medicinal purposes and same-sex marriage up here...
Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)
Greg Southern 04-15-08, 03:50 PM You allow marijuana for same sex marriages? That may be why you have so many of them......... concorso 04-15-08, 04:24 PM he's from canada

i wish they allowed it hereThey did the same with the gen1 CTS as well. I've got a 2006 blue chip/ebony. Frank Rizzo 04-15-08, 10:54 PM And.......you can get Blue Chip/Ebony Escalade in the USA, but no CTS.
I dont get it. PygmySurfer 04-15-08, 11:30 PM Yep. This first came up a few months ago. If this is the same person as before, he's essentially showing off this time around. He knows he's showing Americans something they can't get. "Nah nah nah nah nah, you can't have this!"
Yup, it was prolly me :)
I'm curious if it would have been possible for my American friends to have ordered it this way through their dealer, even though the website and brochures said it wasn't an option.
I wouldn't say I'm showing off - just pointing out the stupidity of offering a different set of colour options for two different countries for no apparent reason. memoryleak 05-08-08, 04:00 AM mercedes benz started doing this a few years ago as well. there is a premium/extra charge for all colors - ALL colors! - except black or white.
Yup, this charging for optional colors, originally with german makes, now with Cadillac, smacks of a certain arrogance on the manufacturer's part. Which is why I haven't bought a German car to date. Apparently, "the General" now shares the same mind set. Buy American, r-i-g-h-t! :rant2: :stirpot: lordbaby 05-08-08, 08:29 AM probably gona charge extra as long as they are Tricoat or Tintcoat =(
i believe it is better though mkaresh 05-08-08, 10:19 AM In Cadillac's defense, they were hearing from me and probably many others that most of the colors available on the CTS weren't dramatic enough, and looked too ordinary. If the solution is a higher cost paint, they're going to charge extra for them.
The problem now is that, since they haven't significantly bumped the total number of colors, for every one of the new extra cost colors one of the no-cost colors was dropped. Next step: more colors. Generally a larger number of color options are available with luxury makes. Cadillac needs to realize this. Some of you guys might remember a couple of years ago that the extra cost
colors were $595-695. Then one year they were all $995. Hmmmmm.
Sounds like they got a good little profit center going right now. Southern 05-08-08, 01:17 PM Hope so. mkaresh 05-08-08, 01:26 PM Some of you guys might remember a couple of years ago that the extra cost

In general, options are far more profitable than the base car. Options are priced entirely based on what buyers are willing to pay, not how much they cost to offer. Cost just determines whether or not they are offered at all.
The decision process works like this:
Are enough buyers willing to pay cost + x% for the feature?
If so, offer it, and price it at whatever level maximizes profits.
Econ 101, really.
With paint colors, they've set up the factory to only allow a certain number of paint colors. They've now figured out that many buyers are willing to pay extra for special paint. So the regular colors have been squeezed out.
It does cost more to offer the special paint. But at most $500 more, and perhaps not that much. | |
