I know there's been a lot said about this issue... What am I experiencing when my rear end makes a "dribbling" sound under moderate acceleration? It usually happens around 40-55 MPH... or is this even coming from there?

I've also heard this described as a "drone."

Classic diff whine. 4th gear 45 mph light to medium throttle.

Just roll wdown the windows or crank up the tunes. Live with it untill that doesn;t work, then get it fixed under warrantee.

I'm on my 4th, and it's making all kinds of odd noises.

Hey trukk, have you tried any of the synthetic diff lubes? Mine is going in Monday for the diff whine plus a few other v issues. I have some Royal Purple sitting here I haven't put in yet in case they replace the diff. Just wondering if it helps at all?

I can ABSOLUTELY tell you NOT to use Mobil 1 Diff fluid. Mine started grinding and making all kinds of racket after installing it.

Mine goes in next monday, to have try out the GM synthetic XLR spec rear diff lube. It couldn't be any worse than the Mobil 1 that's for sure.

Some poeple on here have really talked up the AMSOIL shockproof gear oil, but I'm too lazy to order it.

The LS fluid is working wonders in the XLR, it should be fine for the V even though it hasn't been "validated" yet.

We have some in stock, shouldn't be a problem ;)

I found the white paper on the different oils about 5 min after I ordered the Royal Purple. Otherwise I would have ordered the Amsoil. I may have to order it anyway and do something else with the Royal Purple.

Thanks! I appreciate your support. If anyone is interested in AMSOIL diff fluids but finds ordering too hard, if you can do paypal, I'll put the order in for you at the AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program (http://www.c66racing-synthetics.com/Preferredcustomer.htm) pricing. PM for pricing info if interested.

Mine was making all sorts of noise, and I changed mine out. I used the GM Synthetic Axle Lube SAE 75W-90 Part #12378261 and a bottle of Limited Slip Axle Lubricant Additive Part#1052358 and mine doesn't make much noise at all!
What's the LS fluid? Is that Amsoil?

LS fluid is a new fluid that GM released in December.
It is a synthetic gear lube with a built in limited slip friction modifier additive.
You don't have to add the modifier.
It actually says "LS" on the label.

Ya the techs at Kelley Auto told me that the additive wasn't needed, but I put it in anyways. Won't hurt at least. Works like a charm!

All CTS-Vs require the additive.
G80 does not show on the SPID label on V but they all have the option.

Base CTS only requires the additive if it shows the G80 option.

What is the part number for the new LS fluid?

All CTS-Vs require the additive.

True, but keep in mind that many fluids, such as the AMSOIL Severe Gear come with the additive already mixed in as part of the gear lube.

Yes, there are a few other fluids that already have the additive built in.
Read the label.
;)
Thanks for the reminder.

I sent an email to my XLR contact to see if he can check to see if they are validating this fluid for the CTS-V.

My XLR contact is telling me to hold on until he can verify some information with the CTS team.
He seems to think that the CTS-V diff may have different lube requirements for the limited slip than the similar but notably different setup they use in the Y car.
I am hoping he can put me in touch with someone on the CTS team so I can find more info.
Don't rush out and buy this stuff. It may work, but it may end up causing chatter. If one of you guys is willing to be a guinea pig I guess that is okay but I don't know anything official yet.

So to remedy my problem, which sounds to be normal by the members of the board, is to service the rear diff replacing the fluid w/ the Amsoil product mentioned, or something of the like, right?

Thanks,

I think the AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90 (http://www.c66racing-synthetics.com/Product%20Bulletins/SVGPB.htm) will help minimize wear of diff components, and it seems to do very well to prevent diff clutch pack chatter (which is another diff problem commonly noted in slow speed sharp turns), but I don't think it will cure the diff whine common to the CTS-V (and other GM diffs such as the one in the GTO) once the whine has developed. However, it may help prevent the diff whine from getting worse.

I drained my stock diff fluid at just over 10k miles on the car and had it analyzed. The results indicated some pretty excessive wear.

Not mechanically detrimental. Adding too much additive will result in your limited slip diff being less limited slip. I don't have the shop manual for my CTS-V yet, but for my 02 Corvette Z06, the limited slip diff is supposed to pass 75 ft-lbs of torque to the tire with grip. If the clutch plates in the diff don't have the nominal torque because the diff fluid is "too slippery", this figure may come down slightly. I doubt most daily drivers will ever notice the difference.

No word yet on this fluid usage for the V.
I hate to bug my contact, but I might if someone really wants me to.

Have you used your gear lube yet? Curious to know your comments on it, and whether you used any additive to go along with it?

I haven't checked, but is 2 qts enough to refill the diff? Does it already have the necessary lubricants in it, or will I have to also do an additive?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure it's 1.5 quarts in the diff.
