Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge vs. CrossContact UHP

Trying to make up my mind, want good ride/quiet but also great dry + wet, do not care about snow as I have great winter tires on other rims…

Any thoughts?

I put the Good-years, staggered sizes, on my AWD N*V8 and like them a lot better than the OEM Michelin's. Can talk about the UHP's as I've not tried them.

Are the Goodyear tires quieter than the Michelins? I think the stock Michelins are rather loud (V8 AWD Sport, 18")

I have the cross contacts, and they are great...wonderful tread wear and perfect in all types of weather...

Mines are same size all around...

You don't have a choice unless you wait until June for the Goodyears to be made, I have been comparing the same two tires for the last 2 weeks myself.

I am going to go with the Crosscontact in the V rated version, price is the same and it is a pure summer tire so it should do what I need it to. Reviews are great as well, the Goodyears would be just as good I think but I worry about not getting one if I get stuck and need one in a hurry.

From what I know the Goodyears that are out there right now were made during the strike and quality my not be good, go with the Conti and call it a day. I'm doing my tirerack order right now.

ALSO, VR or ZR? Looks like treadwear is different for ZR vs VR in the 255??

I have used the Conti CC UHP staggered sizes for my 05 N* RWD since the factory Michelins died at 30K miles. My vehicle now has 60K miles and the fronts will need replacing in 5K miles while the rears will likely have at least 15K left. I plan to replace the fronts with the Conti CC UHP 255/55VR-18 in 5K miles. I believe that my front tires would have lasted longer had I been able to rotate the tires. Thus, I do not plan to use the staggered sizes in the future based upon many postings on this web site which report no handling problems with the 255/55-18 size used front and rear.

The Conti's ride/handle/brake better in dry/wet than the Michelins and are also quieter. I do not have any knowledge regarding the Goodyear tires. All of the evaluations (testers and customer) on the Tirerack also rate the Conti CC UHP (VR speed rating) highly. I have been very happy with these tires. I think that you will be as well.

This concerns me being a Michigander

Conti CC UHP are not intended to be driven in snow or on ice.

I think he said he has winter tires.

I ordered the Conti's, I also have winter tires.

I like using the right tire for the job, you don't wear soccer shoes to curl.

I like the Goodyears alot and think they would make a bad winter tire so the "all season" rating is lame at best, they look like a great summer tire with nice big tread blocks and not much sipeing (SP?) so they would be stable.

The Conti's are very much like the KH11 Kumho and those are really good so thats why I went with the v rated Conti, they also share some very nice OEM company so they can't bee all that bad.

Toyo ST was another option for me as it is summer only but the tread just was not doing it for me and the "all season" rating on those is a total joke, how in the world could those make it in the snow?

I have the 20" Toyo Proxes ST's on my 07, live in SE Michigan, and I thought they were exceptional this pass winter. We had very close to record snow in the Detroit area and my AWD SRX would beat just about anything at the stop light snow drags...
When I first got them I was a little concerned since my last vehicle had the GY Tripletreds, and they were great, but the ST's proved to be just as good.

I'm glad you found them good for you, put some real tires on and you will know what grip really is. The rubber just does not work when cold, even when on dry or wet cold road if it is below freezing a winter tire will stop and go faster all day long. I use studded tires because I can't live without the grip but even non-studded winter tires are better, the tread on the Toyo can't have much give and I would think would skid before gripping road.

No to get off topic and I don't want to start a fight but I hear it all the time, all season tires DO NOT grip like winter tires in the winter. If you think your tires work great but want to improve your stopping and acceleration use winter tires.

I have been doing AutoX and winter AutoX for close to 10 years now and I can spot a tire I like and how it will work by how it looks, the toyo is a summer tire and would make a good one.

I will have my Conti's on Monday and I can post what I think.

The Kumho STX is another nice choice, lower tread wear but for $115ea just buy more of them :)

Agree, winter tires are superior to all season. Especially the ones with any edges, greater deformity and bite on hard pack ice etc.

What I really would love would be for Goodyear to make the F1 Asymmetric available in our size, this looks just about to be the best summer tire available with a good ride! Check out the test from tire rack…

I had different sizes on my 06 SRX. It came with Michelans and they got chewed up in the front. They didn't last to long maybe 23k. I just bought some Cooper Zeon XST's, but I went with the 255's all the way around. The tires are quiet and they have really good traction. The best part is that they were super cheap 111.00/tire.

I had the Cross Contact LXs on my '04 and found them to be superior to original Goodyears AND CHEAPER.

Need some help guys....

I have an 04 with N V8, 4WD, high performance package and magnetic shock control. Car is really babied, has only 22K on it now and still (knock on wood) doesn't have a single scratch on it. Fantastic handling and great ride. Had trouble at 2500 miles with steering. Entire Rack and Pinion system replaced. At 6K, front tires were gone..dealer replaced. At 17K rear tires were gone, replaced with original equip Michelins. The car has the different sizes on front and rear, so you can't rotate. I wanted to go with the same size all around and the dealer and the factory gave me all kind of "horror" stories that you can't do this....quote "..it will screw up the traction and stability control system, .......it will screw up the 4WD system....... balh blah blah....." I'm now at the point where the front one are gone again, after only 16K, and I would like to get away from this different tire size gotcha. (BTW, the rack had to be replaced again at 21K.)

I find it a little hard to believe that his vehicle cannnot safely use the same size tires all around. Do any of you have experience going to the same size tires all around? If so, did you go with the original front size or the rear?

I live in Pennsylvania so the winter thing has to be considered. BTW the Michelins now on it have done well in the snow here.

Appreciate any advice and experience alonag these lines..........Thanks

There have been several threads about this and I don't think anybody who has put 255s all around has had a problem.
You should ask your dealer if it is bad to put 255s all around, why is it offered in the Sport package from the factory?
I have had 2 RWD SRXs and tire wear has been absolutely even on both vehicles with no tire rotation(obviously).

I had two fronts (Goodyear) replaced at about 9,000 miles on an ’04 V6 AWD (no MRC) that would not force balance. Know this was not an alignment issue at all, just bad tires. I have 14,000+ miles on ’07 AWD with MRC and no sign of unusual wear front or rear. Disregarding the tire size issue and the fact that you had the front tires replaced at low mileage on an AWD, have to wonder about alignment of the AWD setup and MRC.

The fact that the ’09 SRX will have MRC available on the RWD only makes one wonder, is there a problem with the MRC/AWD combination regarding tire wear etc?

I am looking at the CrossContact UHP, has there been any more experience with these that the group can share. The other options I am looking at is replacing the Michelins and the Dunlop 5000.

The reviews on the Crooss Contact are good here and on tirerack but Continental classifies them as "light truck" which makes me think they are rougher and noisier than a regular passenger all season tire.

I have had the Michelin XMXM4 and looking for ride and low noise, not a performance tire.

Thank you in advance for your consideration

I have the Contis, they have been on for about 200k maybe and I have not driven yet. My wife likes them so far, better turn in and quiet. I like them for the tread, quality and price.

I chickened out and went 255 all 4, I was going to go with the toyo 275/55-18 all round as they will fit but I just was worried about the extra weight, drag and fuel mileage.

^^^ I looked at a few diff sizes, but with the factory wheels limited width and offset I'm sticking with the 255s as well. I can't justify "custom" wheels for the wifes car, and the selection of wheels in 6x115 is slim. I'm sure there is at least one more person that would like a 20x10 and 20x11 wheel setup in 6x115...lol

Went ahead with the continentals, put 255 all around so can rotate. Have about 500 highway miles on them and its all good. More agressive looking tread design than the michelins but smooth and quiet. Living in the south I like the idea of a summer tire and this so far apprears to be a good one.
