View Full Version : Needs a New Engine @ 36,000 Miles billd0no 04-03-08, 04:27 PM For some unknown reason my 2004 SRX has been burning oil but showing none of the usual signs. No smoke, no smell, no nothing. The "check engine" light started to flash and according to the owner's manual the engine was mis-firing. Within a few miles it was running very rough and when I turned off the ignition it would not restart.
It now need a new engine. It was five quarts low on oil even though the oil had been changed within 4,000 of the problem.
This is the 16th time the SRX has needed warranty service. Evrything from exhaust, to catalytic converter, to electrical problems and now this. It is on lease and will go back to GM in August. In the mean time my wife has decided she will never drive the car again. She is afraid of being standed or worse.
Any suggestions as to recourse against GM? I'd like to get out of the lease at a minimum. A Forum contributor has been Irishpride. He got a repurchase.
Do what he did ....get an attorney..look for one that specializes in auto defects. King3244 04-03-08, 08:27 PM Wow.....5 quarts low....I'm surprised the low oil display never came on. N* or v-6? MortnCyn 04-04-08, 08:16 AM V8 or V6? Did you check the oil level after it was changed? If not, possibly they did not put in the required 6 quarts for V6 or 8 quarts for V8 with a filter. After any service always a good idea to be sure they did what they said they did and still check levels on a regular basis. Had a time the oil not changed and on various occasions incorrect tire pressure (too high). This service is not done by the dealer’s rocket scientist. V8 or V6? My thoughts exactly. Check oil monthly anyway. I always look under the hood just to look at it too. Never know what you'll find even if you are a NONmechanic like I am.:bomb: z32drifter 04-04-08, 12:34 PM For some unknown reason my 2004 SRX has been burning oil but showing none of the usual signs. Lets see you have not checked your oil level for 4,000 miles and your motor is toast from driving with no oil. Some how this is GMs fault and they should pay for your mistake??? Thanks for signing up, and sharing your excitement. Your are a true Cadillac owner/enthusiast/one post wonder.
Sounds like you have had your share of probs. But as Mort said, we can take a few steps ourselves
to avoid a major catastrophe. In our "gas & go" society, weekly checks are a thing of the past. You should have experienced some sluggish performance a lot sooner than 5 quarts down. It would seem a steady check engine light would have appeared before a flashing one.
Case in point:
A local oil change joint was offering a $29.99 Mobil 1 oil and filter change. (fine print, up to five quarts)
I figured the three additional quarts (for V8) would be $20-$25 or so. Still a decent deal. The kid completed the work. That will be $31.79 he says. I said, what about the other three quarts? He gave me the "duh" look.
I asked him to show me a old filter. He provided a screw on type. I asked for the manager. He was the manager.
An uniformed consumer would have left the place, three quarts low, and with the old filter.
Though we would like to believe that we are receiving good service, and with all the computers on board, our vehicles don't require any human intervention, but we are ultimately responsible to verify with personal checks.
I check the oil at every fill up. My 06 V8 tends to use a quart per oil change. I often get strange looks from people at gas stations. Like, you don't have to check the oil on a Cadillac, do you?
There are a lot of things in life we shouldn't have to do. smokiejoe 04-04-08, 03:23 PM Thats funny GMJim, that the Kid at the J-Team gave you back a Screw-On type Oil Filter, when the vehicle doesn't use that filter. Unbelieveable. bigdaddysrx 04-04-08, 04:03 PM I still find it strange that an "enthusiast" would not check the oil level?
Never would have done that with the other 40 cars I have owned. I make it a HABIT to check all 4 current rides with every fill-up. Tire pressure at least once a month! OH....but it's not my fault...I didn't get an idiot light!
I guess that's why they are called idiot lights!
Kind regards,
BD conedoctor 04-04-08, 04:41 PM We have a V8 AWD and if I checked the oil every fill I would have to add as all the oil I would be wiping off every time, with power comes many gas station trips :) I am not condoneing the lack of oil level checking or inspecting the ground and beneath the vehicle every once in a while.
However,
Overhead cam engines tend not use oil like the old pushrod motors, unless there is a problem or abuse. They are pressure lubed not splash and drain, so there should be less wear thus less burning and usage.
Most also no longer use the old cork gaskets that would leak. So unless there is a puddle on the ground or oil under the car I can see people not remembering to check oil anymore.
That being said, the new oils are much thinner and tend not too smoke as much. The motor may not be bad, but if a PCV valve sticks, internal breather port cloggs or a vacuum leak sucks oil in, it could use oil when not expected. Mercedes had such a problem late 90's.
I also agree there should have been a loss of power and in the least the temperature gauge would rise. But again one would have to be aware of the gauge and also it's normal operating range.
Wish you luck, try everything avenue or else you will be buying a motor. I hope you used a dealer for the change and not j-lube However,

Although I agree with most of your post, I'd like to point out a couple of things. Cylinder wall squirters are used on hp pushrod engines. The new Corvette ZR1 with the LS9 has it.
What's OLD about pushrods? The first DOHC 4 valve engines were used by Fiat in 1912! Nothing NEW there.:o Riduculous one post wonder . Stop wasting time responded to the poser fellas. Cannot help myself ... or take my own advice above..
2004 model - 48 month lease? Lease up in 4 months ? You didn't check oil for 4000 miles?
I say count your blessings if they cover it under warranty and give you a loaner . Wife scared to drive it? Come on. Then you drive it if they fix it for the last 1/12th of the lease. Or, buy another GM and pull ahead on your lease. If they fix it, you owe it to them in my opinion . keendog 04-07-08, 10:17 PM Little known problem that can be huge - there is no low oil indicator on the SRX. z32drifter 04-08-08, 09:39 PM Little known problem that can be huge - there is no low oil indicator on the SRX.
Sure there is, but you have to open the hood to check it. conedoctor 04-09-08, 10:19 AM LOL, just like the battery warning, it won't start. Riduculous one post wonder . Stop wasting time responded to the poser fellas.
I quess I don't understand what your talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :salute: I quess I don't understand what your talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :salute:
Aside from the fact that my spelling was terrible in that post, it means the OP (Original Poster), posted some made up or exaggerated garbage once and then never came back. He/she was not really looking for an answer. He/she just came on here to post one post slamming the SRX. Likely a bored Toyota salesman...

They post, someone replies even to a logical question, and you never see a thank you or any follow-up. The same people that used to call a drug store and ask if they have Prince Albert in a can etc. Sophomoric would be a compliment! Still wonder about the guy that had the rear-end lock up and wrecked. He seemed to disappear when questioned about steering etc. urbanski 04-10-08, 07:40 AM agreed, one inflammatory post with no follow up = not useful.
OP can try again later with more effort, if they come back. | |
