Been a while since I've checked out this forum but been too busy and the car has been good, until recently that is.

For the past month or so I've felt that the transmission has been shifting strangely, kind of hunts before shifting or "struggles" on the shift. Then after a trip of about 200 miles after pulling of the highway the DIC displayed the message "Transmission Hot Idle Engine". As I was only a few minutes from home I continued on and when I got home left the car idling for about 10 minutes in the driveway. The message never went away so I just shut the engine off. Next day, no message but still poor shifting.

Now a month later I get the message again and as before idling the engine does not cure the problem but shutting off and starting later the message is gone.

Searching the net it seems there may be a service bulletin on this but I can't find a site with the full text, just the titles of the bulletins. My car is out of warranty and I don't want to pay the dealer to fix what seems to be a computer programming problem.

Anyone else have this problem and if so, what was the fix?

Guess there is an outside chance that it is warranty under the 8/80,000 powertrain control module.

I had a similar issue, same symptoms (04, AWD-V8). They relaced the trans bi-pass valve per doc 1744191. They also replaced K6120 seals, cooler lines, 37 WC4, and 1 24221232 connector. I was under warranty so no prices. hope this helps

Thanks Habu, sounds like a known problem then. Hope MortnCyn is right but given the list of replaced items I suspect it's going to cost me despite it looking like a design defect.

What bugs me most about this is that my lease is up in June and it won't be me that benefits from the repair. Maybe I'll just keep driving it and take it back as is and let the dealer worry about it if it will hold together that long.
