So I pinpointed my turning noise to the upper area of the struts where they mount to the car on both sides. I tried loosening them and lubing them up but it didn't do anything. Can I replace these without removing the struts from the spindles. I thought maybe some spring compressors and removing the top nuts maybe I could get at it on the car. Just don't want to screw up the alignment. My understanding is the upper strut mount is replaceable.
What type of noise is making, is it only when turning? If its a popping/grinding noise when turning I noticed with most of my cars I have owned the past it always the strut bearings that need replacing, and while your there just do the strut mounts as well.
....Can I replace these without removing the struts from the spindles.No. The strut mount (thrust bearing) is the piece that pre-loads the spring and attaches the whole strut assembly to the body.
I thought maybe some spring compressors and removing the top nuts maybe I could get at it on the car. Just don't want to screw up the alignment.Do yourself a favor and consider replacing the struts (if they are high-mileage parts) and the thrust bearings all in one job. If the struts are still controlling rebound, replacing the thrust bearing requires the struts be removed, broken down, R & R the thrust bearing, reinstall strut assembly, check alignment.
My understanding is the upper strut mount is replaceable.Correct.
