I am in the market to buy a used STS or CTS. Either way it will be a v-6 model. My pocket book allows me to look at 2005-2007 model years. I am interested in Autocrossing and open track days as well. Which year/model is best for this? .....based on aftermarket part availability/pricing as well as production suspension set-ups and geometry. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CTS would be the way to go if you plan on auto-x. The 255hp 3.6L V6 is available with a 6-speed manual and you can easily retro-fit it with the V-series suspension bits.

Honestly, if you are serious about using it as a track car, you should consider the CTS-V though. Prices have come down quite a bit on used ones and in the end you may even find them to be more affordable than purchasing and then upgrading a V6. Another positive in choosing a V is the aftermarket support. Mod options with the 3.6L V6 are very limited, while the LS-series V8 found in the V has one of the largest aftermarkets of any engine due to it's being shared with the Corvette.

I've already got a gas guzzling 63 Nova with a 383 that i do a bit of auto-X'ing with. I am looking to trade in the OTHER gas guzzler in my garage(2500 HD Chevy Diesel) for something more driveable.

The truck shouldn't be that bad on mileage. My grandfather's '03 2500 Diesel gets 15-16 city 20-22 highway. Do a little work on it and you could do this:
