View Full Version : Nav install - glowing recommendation Dave Head 03-24-08, 11:09 PM I completed my install today of a 'plug and play' Nav unit sourced and prepped by Cadillac2003STS. He did the adapter cable and provided the guidance to disassemble the dash, install the GPS and VSS wire. It was a perfect install with zero issues.
This was a Nav install into a base 03 deville NON-Bose system with factory XM and Onstar. The only functionalities not enabled in this install are voice guidance and DSP. Both of these features require a Bose amp and requisite wiring. Not something I'm willing to undertake. The DVD sound ambiance is better than my home system!
By the way, Jason - the disk in the drive was a RAP CD. Needless to say, its history... ld00deville 03-24-08, 11:23 PM So the Nav doesnt have the turn by turn voice??:hmm: Do the steering wheel controls work still? Dave Head 03-24-08, 11:27 PM The guidance starts and ends, but there's no 'turn by turn' voice prompts. The steering wheel controls work fine... dirt_cheap_fleetwood 03-25-08, 12:07 AM Pictures? I need to see something to figure out what you are talking about. I'm not one to imaging stuff in my mind, takes too much effort. Dave Head 03-25-08, 10:19 AM Basically there is nothing to see. When you turn on 'guidance' in the NAV unit, it shows you the volume settings for the voice turn by turn (and allows you to test them). When you do your route, it tells you by voice that turn by turn will begin. BUT - without a BOSE amp, you will get no verbal directions because the instructions come down a different wire. When you are arriving it will talk to you again - telling you you have arrived.
Voice Activation is the voice commands enabled be the talk/end button located on the left hand side of the steering wheel - center button. When 'pointed' to the Nav it enables you to control the radio/Nav by voice commands. If you want to 'repoint' it to the Onstar you just say 'phone' after pressing the 'talk' button and then it will enable the Onstar phone hands free instead of the radio/Nav voice control. CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 09:08 PM woah woah
when you said you werent getting voice guidance i thought you ment you could not speak to the unit and have it understand what your saying
it should still dictate voice commands to you IE turn left in 10 miles, turn right in 3 miles etc etc
ill have to check with Gattib if he had any issues
i actually had that issue on my 03 STS when i 1st installed it just to realize that the VSS wasnt located at the stock harness as it should be which is why i had to run it to the cluster
heres a ? for you to test a few things, when your driving does the arrow indicating your car actually turn to point in the direction of travel? CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 09:18 PM just called Joe aka Gattib
i did the SAME set up for his car as i did on yours wiring and all only i did NOT make the voice plug for is as i was pretty sure and its been proven that voice command will not work on a non bose car
however he did state that the unit DOES talk to you though saying turn left in 5 miles, turn right onto interstate 279 etc etc....
i think either the dealer messed something up when doing your VCIM reprogram or maybe that voice plugs i made for you should be d/c and could be causing the issue
i will paste the VCIM reprogram instructions here but i would also try unplugging the black plug i made for you but please post back about the arrow CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 09:21 PM Bulletin No.: 01-08-46-002C

When using a service replacement for the OnStar(R) Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM), the module will need to be programmed for the option content specific to the vehicle being serviced. Failure to perform this initial set-up could result in degraded voice recognition or microphone performance, Driver Information Center (DIC) text display and/or inability of the OnStar(R) system to mute the radio as well as audio problems for the user.
Important: Following the OnStar(R) Vehicle Communication Interface module replacement, you must contact the OnStar(R) Call Center via the vehicle OnStar(R) button and speak to an advisor to update the customer's OnStar(R) account. The advisor will require new VCIM Station ID (STID) and Electronic Serial Number (ESN), located on the label on the module. Failure to update the customer's account will result in the OnStar(R) system not functioning as designed.
Programming Procedure
1. Connect the Tech 2(R) to the vehicle.
2. Select Diagnostics.
3. Select the model year.
4. Select vehicle type (car, truck, incomplete, etc.)
5. Select Body.
6. Build the vehicle following the Tech 2(R) screens, choosing the appropriate vehicle options.
7. Select OnStar(R) from the menu.
8. Select Special Function.
9. Select Set-up new OnStar(R). CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 09:30 PM Dave
another thing
if you can have the dealer try the software update for the nav
its outline here to fix a problem with the onstar and nav communication
it may help fix your problem
Intermittent Numbered Keypad Displayed on Navigation Radio - kw key OnStar pad phone unwanted #PI01728 - (Feb 10, 2004)
Intermittent Numbered Keypad Displayed on Navigation Radio
.
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment that after replacement of an OnStar module, they see a numbered keypad display on the navigation radio face intermittently.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Techline Tech 2 software update for March number 24.001 will contain a programming change that will eliminate this numbered keypad from showing on the Nav radio screen. Technicians should be sure to use the set-up new OnStar feature when reprogramming the module (s).
.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
Models:
(2002-03 Cadillac Deville) and (2002-03 Cadillac Seville) Dave Head 03-25-08, 10:23 PM The arrow doesn't turn. It will go backwards, sideways, etc. I will try unplugging the cell signal tomorrow.
My understanding was that it would NOT give the voice guidance because of the non bose. But that the verbal commands would work.
From the Cadillacfaq.com:
Navigation Install Phase II: (for non Nav CTSs)
How to add Voice commands and Audible directions
Explanation:
After installation of a Factory Navigation Radio into a non-Navigation equipped CTS, Part II describes the fabrication of the wire harnessing to get the audible directions and voice commands working like the factory installed systems. Non-nav CTSs are missing this wire harnessing from the factory. This works with the Bose amplifier only, since the base amp does not have provisions for audible directions. The voice commands should work, as the On-Star (VCIM) is identical and only missing the harness.
-----------------
However, the cell signal and drain wire are shown as hooked up in the original wiring (F16 for the signal, and I can't remember the pin number for the drain). Those are supposed to go to the separate 5 pin connector in the 1/2 positions for the Nav. They go to C3 on the VICM.
I still think its a programming issue unless the drain is miswired... CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 10:30 PM Dave
email me your phone num
ill hit you up but itll have to be brief
voice command of the unit TO you should work regardless of amp or anything it only doesnt work when theres a failure of the vss or gps it did on mine even before the VCIM reprogram
if the arrow is not rotating theres an issue with either the GPS or VSS Dave Head 03-25-08, 10:37 PM one more to 30... so my pm works... CadillacSTS2003 03-25-08, 11:03 PM VSS def is the issue Dave
goodluck this weekend with the fix
be sure to post back CadillacSTS2003 03-28-08, 10:33 PM how goes it? Dave Head 03-30-08, 12:35 PM Sent you a sep email. Here's the majority:
I checked continuity today. Couldn't ID where I was losing the signal - but I was. Took apart the scotchlock connector - it looked like a good connection for both wires.
Replaced the bullet connector with a butt connector near the radio. Drove around, still wouldn't work - and I had checked continuity from the instrument cluster all the way to the connector at the radio.
Final problem seems like I either wasn't waiting long enough for the calibration to complete, or I hadn't gone fast enough. Either way, it suddenly started working and the irritating voice guidance is now working. The 'icon' for the car points whichever way the car is pointing, etc.
I'm still convinced that the voice commands will work - and that its a Tech 2 setting. The Bose AMP doesn't appear to have any interactions with these signals
When I look at the wiring diagrams it shows the cell mike signal and drain line between the radio and the VICM or the cellular telephone module - depending on the option of the second phone. There is NO ambiguity. The VICM signal supplies the Onstar mike signal, and the cellular telephone module supplies the 'second' phone option signal to the radio.
The circuit numbers are the same - with the U45 standard radio, the signal comes from either the module or the VICM to F16 and E7 on connector 1 at the back of the radio. Without the 'UV8' option (cellular telephone) it comes from the VICM. Circuit numbers are 2610 and 814. Page 8-644 in my manual. Page name is 'Navigation System Schematics (Domestic Microphone)'
With the U3R Navigation, its exactly the same - only it goes to the C2 connector at the back of the radio in positons 1 and 2.
And for those wondering, the VSS signal issue was my fault - There was NOTHING wrong with either the unit, the patch cable that Jason built, or his instructions. Just a bad connection. CadillacSTS2003 03-30-08, 12:55 PM glad everything worked out bro
you can shut that voice off or turn it down if you like, i turned mine off lol | |
