View Full Version : Traction Control comes on when it shouldn't betterlife18 03-22-08, 08:49 PM My dad has a 95 Fleetwood (LT1, RWD) and the traction control kicks on when it's not supposed to. You could be driving 30mph down a smooth old country road and all of a sudden it will come on. This is a real pain in the butt, especially since he is trying to sell it. Of course you can hit the kill switch in the glovebox, but doing that everytime you crank the car is just not acceptable.
Now getting that problem fixed at this point is not an option, as chances are it will be an expensive fix and he just can't afford that right now. Is there a way to permanently keep the traction control from coming on? I can't find a fuse on the thing, so I'm thinking it's a part of the ECM.
Any ideas? :hmm: betterlife18 03-23-08, 02:59 AM *bump*
anyone? perhaps unplugging a sensor of some sort?
I'm desperate here! :crying2: The traction control just detects significant differences between the rotating speeds of the rear wheels versus the front. Do you have different tire sizes between your front/rear by chance? I know people running staggered rims encounter traction control problems. Check your tire inflation too.
If you want to disable the traction control the harness for it is under the hood, sitting towards the driver's side near the fender closer to the windshield. You can trace that cable to the "ASR" module. When I unplug it, the Orange "Traction Control" light will come on in the dashboard indicating that it is not working. jayoldschool 03-24-08, 12:52 PM I think you could also program it out. Any programmers near this guy? gfxdave99 03-24-08, 01:32 PM If you're trying to sell it, do the right thing and take it to a mechanic to have it looked at instead of trying to hide a potential problem.
Most cars share sensors between ABS and the traction control, there is probably just a bad sensor or connection somewhere. betterlife18 03-27-08, 09:49 PM Hey thanks guys for your responses! I'll letcha know what we end up doing. We just can't afford to get it fixed right now, we're extremely broke! Eldo1953 03-29-08, 02:25 PM Sounds like a wheel speed sensor. Not an expensive fix really. tenmark 03-29-08, 05:16 PM I had the same problem with a 94 a few years back. Pulled the underhood traction control fuses, I think there were two, problem solved. I think the ABS runs on the same fuses so you'll be disabling that too.

If you do it, be sure to consider that into your driving habits - especially in bad weather. And know that braking distance will be seriously lessened. Drive it like an older Cadillac. None of those had either of those systems. If you want to disable the traction control the harness for it is under the hood, sitting towards the driver's side near the fender closer to the windshield. If you do the above you will disable traction control while leaving ABS intact. Yes, I can turn of TC for you, but it will be full time off, no way to turn on until we reflash it again. Yes, it is part of the PCM code. Let me look into some things to verify. Reason is GM has 2 traction control systems on the FW. The hardware TC, the "ASR" thingy under the hood, and a software traction control. I know I can turn off the software version (this is simply massive timing retard when slippage happens). The hardware ASR applies the brake of the offending wheel, and it also jerks back the throttle. That one needs to either unplug the unit under the hood, to it can't pull back timing, but that will trip a light. So turning it off from the glovebox switch (which also trips a light) does accomplish the same thing for the most part.
I have been thinking of making a module to by default turn TC or Tow Haul Mode (if you have it on your truck) with 2 modes, default TC off or default TC on, or default TH on or default TH off.
Interested? I don't know about the GMs, but my crown vic police interceptor came with a TC disable kit in the glove box. All it did was short the TC Disable switch full time. That would probably allow you to maintain your Anti-lock brakes while disabling the TC. I'm not sure about the TC light though. It's a pretty easy thing to try. Please do and post back. Being not tooo many Cadillac Fleetwood's were used in police work, and the Caprice was, but B Bodies never got the traction control.... Not much chance of it...
But the Trans AM's did have it as an option, but I never heard of a disable kit, but not saying it didn't exist from GM, probably special order in the Pontiac division. Red_October_7000 03-31-08, 04:40 PM Get some clip leads, short the switch, and fire the motor. See if the TC comes up off. Presto-change-o, TC always off. Twist the wires together if you like this. Better idea is run the wires to a simple SPST switch so you can leave it to either be always on or always off, so for instance you can turn it on for days with bad weather, etc. Have you tried it? I don't think it will work. Test first, hold switch and start car, if it comes up disabled, yes, if not, no. I don't think it will. But for sure, let us know! My TC is down until I swap in my 3.42's again, I have a 80 axle in there now with posi.
Posi trumps Traction Control!! I will get my 3.42's back in and Posi, so I will have best of all worlds! I just had my ABS/Traction control done on my 95 DeVille, $1100 for the ABS traction control unit, and that was used. Don't try hiding the problem, if the person you sell it to has a serious accident because the ABS fails...you're up the creek big time. | |
