View Full Version : Found My Ticking Noise...

Well, I found my ticking noise. We put the car up in the air and the entire ticking sound is coming from inside the collectors right before the flange (not a leak at the flange). What do you guys think this is? Does it sound like the typical LSx valve train noise (would that come from the collector?) or do I have a problem?

The noise can be:

valve train, leaks, or normal.

Headers amplify the mechanical noise for sure.

You can try some HEAT WRAP for exhaust systems if you think that might quiet it down some.

The cast irons muffle quiet a bit of sound.

No leaks, the ticking is ALL coming from inside the collectors...maybe I will try some heat wrap...not a bad plan! Thanks Heavy!

Any other suggestions?

Take them off, and send them to me. I'll see what I can find. lol

Take those header flanges and tighten them down until they half way mushroomed over. You'l have hardly any noise aside as heavy mentioned that the metal is thinner than the stock cast manifolds.

My flanges and bolts look like bananas they are so tight. You'll to drive a few heat cycles and tighten sessions before everything is relaxed.

Their not going to pivot!

Got a two track event at Roebling Road this weekend and I'll be tightening again. :)

Flanges are tight..there are NO exhaust leaks. The noise has to be valvetrain noise thats just being transmitted through the collector.

Forgot, mine are Jet Got coated. Not sure that would make an audible difference or not. :)

I am starting to think that I need a valve adjusted or I have a bent pushrod or something. It doesn't seem like I have any power loss though...just the anoying noise!

Not meaning to point out the obvious but, have you checked the oil lately? You may want to switch from the 5w30 to 10w40. I run Amsoil XL10w40 and have never had a problem and it quiets it up a little.

Oil is good, I was thinking of adding some lucas synthetic oil stabilizer to thicken everything up

Can you explain when you hear it? Hot or cold I have to have the window done at the bank teller or door open when I start it to hear it faintly. I don't drive with the door open and have the stock quiet exhaust. :)

I can never hear it with the windows closed. I can not hear it with the windows open either unless I am relitivly close to another car or a wall or something like that. When you put the car up on a lift you can hear that ALL the noise is coming directly from the collectors. Like I said before it is not an exhaust leak at the collector flange though.

Many Corvette owner's report a common ticking problem as well. As mentioned above, running an oil with higher viscosity seems to help.

Personally, I'd try an oil designed with a higher viscosity before adding an oil additive to my car. I don't think any major oil company recommends oil additives with their oils.

If your temp is over 0F where you live, I'd consider going with a 10w30 and see what happens. I'm pretty sure that your owner's manual allows 10w30 over 0F.

My owners manual says DO NOT USE ANY OIL OTHER THAN Mobil 1 5W30.

The owners manual does not say that.:nono:

Read Chapter 5 section 18 and you will see that they claims that 10w30 is ok.:D

I've got an 06 CTS-V and an 02 Corvette Z06 and neither of these owner's manual states anywhere that Mobil 1 is required. They say that Mobil 1 meets all the manufacturer's requirements, which is obviously true.

I could have sworn mine says that. 2007. I'll have to check again.

HEHE, SW has no tickin noise... I am just waitin on my adaptor so i can start to dial it in...

Drove it around for a while yesterday, i LOVED every second of it...Am thinkin of kickin off early from work and going out for a spin...I do need to "gas it up"

The first time I heard it it sounded like an exhaust leak to me.

Could it be a leak from a weld on the collector...internal where each piece meets? You could disconnect the cats and stick a flashlight in there to see if there is any open area...just an idea.

I'm kind of just tired of dealing with it to be honest. I am just going to chalk it up to mod hell and wrap the SOB's in header wrap. I'm sure it will help some.

sounds like the inside of the cat is coming apart to me .... how has no one suggested this yet?

Sorry, mine says "DO NOT USE SAE 10W-40, SAE 20W-50 OR ANY OTHER VISCOSITY GRADE OIL NOT RECOMMENDED" -- Page 348 (mine doesn't have chapters). I guess truck motors need the lower viscosity. :canttalk:

I guess truck motors need the lower viscosity.

Not the motor that drives the requirement, but CAFE ratings. Ford has gone to 20 grade oils for the same reason.

Interestingly, GM recommends 0w40 in their Eurospec C6 Z06 and 5w30 in the U.S. spec. Think the motors are any different?

I think the oil plays a role in different operating environments. Not a good comparison though. :)

SkullV - did you end up wrapping your headers? In any case, what's the latest, have you just grown to accept the noise or is it still bothering you?

I have tha same exact ticking noise emiting from the same area... It's really amplified as i'm drving near a wall. I think it might go away when i get the new headers and cans installed with some of this tax return. But it does sound like it coming from inside the cats... i'll keep you's posted when i change it out.

Wrapped the collectors...yes it helps a lot...no it is not gone...yes I am used to it...This is a side effect of mod hell and I am willing to live with the race car noise for the race car feel! Now I just need to figure out how to afford my procharger/turbo kit (if that ohio forced induction guy is for real)!!
