My 350 Olds (was a 307, got replaced) responded well with a dual snorkel air cleaner and dual under bumper Ram Air ducts on my Rocket V8.... I married up 2 air cleaners and made a nice OEM looking custom dual snorkel air cleaner. Painted the pop rivets black and kept the stock thermacs and hooked them both up so I got the warm air in the winter, and disabled it in the summer. Warm air ingestion DOES improve mpg. Cold air DOES improve power.
Just remember, the stock air cleaner (no EFI) maintains around 100-130F intake air to the carbie all the time, through the little small opening under the air cleaner snork. Granted, under WOT, the vacuum always drops low and it starts to draw air off the main cold air inlet.
GM varied the air temp inlet per application, so those little thermal vacuum valves in the air cleaner were different from air cleaner application to air cleaner application. Some say GM varied per where it was going to be sold at, but I am not sure they really had that much definition in the production line.
I bought my 90 FWB 350 with true duals, no cats and flowmaster mufflers but its loud, really deep and you can hear it pretty good at idle. But i kind of like it because it reminds me of the muscle car era. The good ol days. My 307 has the same exact setup but with mini turbo mufflers(dont know the brand). It has an exhaust manifold leak so I cant really tell you what it sounds like, but it isnt loud at WOT.
