Highlighted in autoweek (?) show tonight. A remote start system (and other cool telemetry technology) that is activated anywhere via one's cell phone. There must be cell phone coverage however. The system costs about $450 to install and about $120/yr. But for those who like this kind of technology I thought it would be useful. I'm looking into it for my wife. I'm surprised GM hasn't allowed such tech via their OnStar system. In that one could use a cell phone to start/open/locate their vehicle in combo with the OnStar hardware.

Why is there an annual subscription fee?

I watched that on AutoWeek and all I could think was, why would you need that, much less spend money for it?

And what happens when somebody dials a wrong number?

Not sure why one would need to start their vehicle from farther away then a keyfob would reach.

Actually I remember at the GM dealer meeting in San Diego in 2003 that a system like that was shown to the dealers. It was a deal with Motorola I believe, came in a Cadillac specific phone as well.

Many of us leave place of work, like an airport, only to be 20+ minutes away from ones vehicle. As for why
$120/year? The explanation would take about 2 pages to list. I researched the system and saw it in action at an installation shop. Many features beyond words in this system. Having one installed in the wife's car next week.

This response does not do anything at all to explain why this is a good idea...sorry. :hmm:

EDIT: OK, I didn't notice the 10 MB attachment in the OP. Just read it, and yeah, someone *may* feel the need for it and can justify the steep initial cost and yearly fee. Me? Probably not, IMHO...

Does being 20+ minutes away mean you would start it 20+ minutes before you got there?

Not Auto Start but ... maybe, maybe, maybe Auto Unlock.
There should be some combination of cell numbers....from OnStar...

Wouldn't OnStar do that for alot less money?

CarDomain Product Overview The CarLink system from Audiovox adds satellite-based remote paging capabilities to your compatible Audiovox or Prestige vehicle security system. Imagine remote starting, locking or unlocking your doors, and arming or disarming your vehicle from any phone, anywhere in the world! Accidentally lock your keys in the car? Whip out your cell phone to unlock the car (or start it!). Feeling a little uneasy about that poorly-lit parking lot? Turn your lights on and give a quick horn honk or two. The CL100 CarLink interface includes lifetime toll-free phone support service, so there’s nothing else to buy and no additional fees. Simply plug the CL100 into the “Data Port” of your compatible Audiovox vehicle security system or remote starting system. Compatible with many newer Audiovox and Prestige vehicle security systems and remote starter systems (available separately). Check your specific model for telematics data port interface.

That does look great. Is it just plug and play in the CTS?

No, its plug & play for Audiovox and Prestige aftermarket alarm systems. A good installer can make it work with others as long as it has a data port.
