Currently, the in-car display calculates 44% oil life remaining before an oil change is necessary. The car has 7600 miles on it...

I know the car requires synthetic oil but I'm calculating 12,000 miles before an oil change is necessary at this rate. Pretty impressive if this is what GM really wants you follow for an oil change guideline. Also a good way to save on maintenance dollars if true.

90% of my driving is highway. What's your mileage/oil life left to date for comparison?

I plan to change my oil after 6 months, regardless of oil life. I only put on about 10000 a year, so going more than a year without changing oil bothers me a little.

Even though it is synthetic, the most important thing for the engine is changing the oil regularly.

My dealership sent me a notice last week to change the oil, there is less than 3000 miles on the car----all they want is cash in their pocket. It makes no sense to change it at 3000 miles, but 12000 is stretching it a bit, I think.

Check a few pages back, this was discussed previously.

i brought it in at 3000 miles because that's what the sticker said, but they said bring it back when it has 6000, so that's what ill do....especially since it'll be the first oil change and the dirtiest.

I did my first change at 4,000. I didn't care what the DIC said.

You can use the oil life monitor (but in any event, the Owners manual also states that the oil should be changed minimally, once a year, regardless of mileage).

I agree with the above. The oil life monitor is actually a very sophisticated device that works amazingly well, but you still need to pay attention to oil levels, etc. It's really hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that service intervals for regular oil and filter changes are determined by a computer and sensors in my car now and not by the rote instructions in an owners manual that dictates a specific number of miles.

I've become conditioned to having service performed at fairly specific mileage intervals in order to preserve my warranty, etc. It's nice to be liberated from that. But it sorta makes me feel uneasy like the old man played by James Whitmore in The Shawshank Redemption. I've become "institutionalized" with the way I've always thought about service intervals.
