View Full Version : First month with '07 STS PEAROB1 03-15-08, 08:09 AM Hello all, I've had my '07 STS N* for one month now. Here are my observations, comments, and questions:
Highs:
Smoothness, power, performance, and the sound of the N* engine:worship:
Interior room. I am 6'6" 270 lbs and I can fit comfortably behind the wheel for extended periods. I've read in some magazine reviews that gave the car low marks for room.
Bose 5.1 sound system. Nuff said:yup:
Road feel, ride, fit and finish, and sound insulation (not too much as to kill growl of N*)
Memory features, remote start, cooled & heated seats, HVAC system, Intelli-beam headlights.
Lows:
Glove compartment size
Wife doesn't like the refuel door on passenger side
Questions:
What is the difference between the standard brakes and the optional JE5 brakes that I have?
How far out or in do the rubber bumpers for the hood be adjusted to? One of mine is way out and the other way in.
Are 245-50-18 size tires OK to put on all fours or will they throw off the T/C computer or speedo? I have seen several posts for people using 255-45-18's on all fours.
Car has been superb so far. The JE5 brakes are larger, I mistakenly bought some standard-size brake pads for the rear and they are too small... and look at your front brake calipers/pads, they are huge!
I was worried about the small glove compartment at first, but I bought an organizer thing that fits on the driver's sun visor (for keeping sunglasses, cellphone, pen, loose change, etc.) and I found that to be much more useful.
being a bigger guy how do you find the seat room? I'm only 5'9" 170 lb and the seat bottom feels fine but not very roomy. I used to own a Park Ave. a while back and the seats felt like sitting in a recliner. PEAROB1 03-15-08, 12:17 PM sapien, You are correct about the JE5 brakes. I stopped by the Caddy dealer a little while ago and looked at an '07 with the standard 17" wheels for comparison. They are bigger. I also looked up the option codes, and they they require the QF8 18" wheels. pjbizjak 03-15-08, 01:00 PM Ditto on the glove compartment but there are storage compartments in the doors. Gas filler, yes I agree with your wife, this is the USA and we drive on the right, so it's only natural that we pull in to the right of the gas pumps. I think they put it on the right to match the european competition. IMO all gas filler tubes should be on the drivers side for all vehicles eliminating confusion at the pumps. 255/45/18 all around will work with no problems, plus you can rotate all 4 tires then. PEAROB1 03-15-08, 01:08 PM pjbizjak, thanks for the info on the info refuel door. The question I had on the tire size was the use of 245-50-18. I have read plenty of info on the use of 255-45-18. 245-50-18 would be about 2% bigger than 255-45-18 -- 27.6" tall vs. 27.0". probably not big enough to make a significant difference 05awdupstater 03-15-08, 01:57 PM Regarding the fuel filler on passenger side, I recall a GM rep telling me that the right side is preferred by engineers for safety sake. If you run out of fuel, they want your body off the main road as far as possible when pouring in your gas. Isn't it nice to know how much GM cares for you (or doesn't want to be sued by you). greghills 03-16-08, 11:12 AM Regarding the fuel filler on passenger side, I recall a GM rep telling me that the right side is preferred by engineers for safety sake. IF they're so concerned with the safety, why is my filler door on my vette just behind the driver seat ? With the roof down, I can actually reach the door while sitting in the car !
I just wish all the mfgs would get together and pick one side to standardize on, I get tired of pulling up to the wrong side because if I drive a different car. If every car was on the same side it was be worse pulling into a station since in many cases you would have to back in if all the pumps were taken on the easy pull up side... In any case I never pull up incorrectly... I always look at the fuel gauge and the little arrow on the guage will always tell you what side your fuel door is on... Pete Benson 03-16-08, 02:49 PM I have never understood all this angst and agony about what side the gas filler door is on. It is where it is, and once you know where it is, which should take about one eighth of a second after you get the car, that's the side you pull up to. What IS the problem? 05awdupstater 03-16-08, 08:17 PM The problem is; he does not have an extra eighth of a second in his busy day. Hmmmmmmmm. Yes, that must be it. Onalaska 03-16-08, 11:00 PM Hey, if all they have to complain about is what side of the car the fuel door is located then the car itself must be pretty damn good! z06bigbird 03-17-08, 12:02 AM For your intellectual crap, er scrap bag, vehicles that run on propane cannot pass inspection unless the filler hose is on the passenger side--in case of side swipe.
Ford puts it's filler hose on pass side also--for safety sake.
GM does not seem to be consistent, changing many times over the years. dhemrick 03-17-08, 04:16 PM I want mine in the middle back of the car behind the license plate like it was in the good old days! Those spring loaded jobs were SO easy to use! :) greghills 03-17-08, 05:07 PM in my case, I do a lot of travelling, which means a lot of rentals. being in a rush back to the airport, I never notice the little arrow until I'm at the pump and since Murphy always travels with me.... the doors is always on the other side .
but I'm with dhemrick - in the middle in the back ! PEAROB1 03-17-08, 07:50 PM Hello everyone, I started this thread stating my thoughts on one month with my '07 STS and now we are talking about refuel locations. The responses are all pretty neat and the logic behind where some are located. :2thumbs:
You all are way too cool with some of you replies. As one poster stated, car must be pretty darn good if all we can fuss abouth is location of gas cap. Keep the replies coming. :rolling: dhemrick 03-17-08, 11:25 PM Hello everyone, I started this thread stating my thoughts on one month with my '07 STS and now we are talking about refuel locations. That's a pretty good summation of the car. These cars really leave little to complain about relative to other cars. We liked our STS-V so much that we got an STS4 to go with it, so we have two STS variants in the garage now... both in black no less.
It is hard to find real fault with the cars beyond nitpicky things. No car is perfect, but if I had to modify these cars at all, I would add electric fuel door release, the massaging seats from the DTS, and would modify the programming so that when the car locks, it would automatically roll up the windows and close the sunroof. The Caddies of the forties had the filler in the left rear taillight - under the beginnings of the "TAIL FINS." Had my '41 for a week before I found the filler. dhemrick 03-18-08, 11:45 AM The Caddies of the forties had the filler in the left rear taillight - under the beginnings of the "TAIL FINS." Now THAT is creative engineering. This is the real story.
Over the past 70 years the following bull stuffing story has been told and retold on how Detroit got the tail fin idea: "Harley Earl authorized the Frank Hershey design for the 1948 Cadillac, which incorporated the first automotive tailfins. Inspiration for the fins came from the Lockheed P-38 Lightning."
The truth is this: Here is a picture of the 194 Cadillac left rear fender. Note that the fuel filler neck and cap is forward of the glass tail lamp.

Now, in 1941, (we are talking about a model year that began in September of 194 and was designed in 1938 or 1939) the glass rear tail lamp has a small but noticeable vertical appendage now covering the original filler spout position. It has very little to do with the P38 as this plane was designed in 1937 by Lockheed, but seen by very few Americans in 1940. However, it was a true vestige of a fin. It was the very first. Although the 1942 Cadillac had a similar feature, it was not as clear as the 1941 models.

Here is how to fuel this Cad. Lift the fin. (to open the hood you lift the Lady on the hood - very lifting car.)

There you go. Now you know the whole story. :yup: Buzz48317 03-18-08, 05:57 PM Oh, boy. Gas filler door complaints? Really? Come on...look at the gas gauge when you pull into the station. I have a short list of complaints about my car (also a 2007, but mine is the V6). I truely love the car and can honestly see myself as a Cadillac driver for the rest of my existance but they REALLY have to step to the plate on their Bluetooth technology. While I LOVE the stereo system this car was designed and built in the era of the i-pod and there is NO reason that the stereo should not integrate with the I-pods. Yeah, yeah I know that you can plug them into the jacks in the center counsel...I mean true integration so that not only does the car play the music, but also charges the i-pod and allows full control of the i-pod with the steering wheel controls. I mean the brilliant engineers won't let you input data into the navigation system, but they are ok with you fumbling for the i-pod in order to fast forward past the Micharl Bolton album that you wife had to download. greghills 03-18-08, 06:30 PM Oh, boy. Door filler complaints.... Yes, it really is that nice of a car
Bu I do agree with you, IPOD integration is a necessity. The only other real complaint I've had -
The 17" rims do not stand up to any abuse, I hit 1 pothole an 40 MPH and bent and cracked the 2 driver side rims...not a fun time.
Now I look like a drunk trying ot avoid potholes (not easy in the northeast) | |
