Hi,
I am attempting to replace the fron main seal on my '68 472. The service manual says to use a puller to remove the hub at the front of the crankshaft. Is it only pressed on? I tried with two different pullers with no luck. Do I need a special tool?

Thanks!

You aren't showing what pullers you used. There is one made for that with bolts that go into the hub.
I see rust on the hub. You have to lube it with penetrating oil or something that will help break the rust. WD40 is better than nothing but a penetrating oil is better.

I was pulling the propeller from the shaft on my boat a few years back. I had a puller on it and it was tightened up as hard as I could go with it. I then put a penetrating oil called Kroil - "The oil that creeps" on it. I left the boat for 1 hour. When I returned, the puller and prop were laying on the ground!
You probably can't find Kroil, but use the best penetrating oil you can find. Let it soak for a couple of day also.

Hello
The hub is only pressed on.
This subject has been up many times before. I add two links to earlier threads.

Yep - save the cork for later. I had to buy the referenced 9/16" fine-thread bolt and a few big washers to use in pressing the hub back on.
You'll see your timing chain when you pull that cover off - and it will be LOOSE. Mine sure was. So maybe you'll want to at least replace it plus the gears with a high-quality setup that does not shed nylon teeth into your motor...

Thanks guys, I used sili-kroil (you can order it directly from kano labs ;) and a steering wheel puller from harbor freight. I cracked that cheap puller, so I machined a 1/2 steel plate with a hole in the middle and four small holes around it. I put the cracked puller behind the plate, ran long 1/4" bolts through the smaller holes to the hub. That cracked it right off.
