Last year I bought a 472 from a guy locally for $300 to go in my 1980 coupe. I was told that he bought it from a guy on here who just had it rebuilt. We put it in and started it a few times and it slung a rod. I never even got a chance to take the car out of my driveway . The same guy came to me cause he found someone with a 72 coupe with a 472 for sale for $1000. The car is in bad shape but it runs and the interior is clean he wants to go half and half on it cause he needs some interior pieces. What i want to know is $500 too much to pay for a running 472. If not I'll go ahead and get it. I just don't trust the guy that much bc when he sold me the 472 that is now blown he told me it was a 500 then after it was in he told me it was a 472.

I would not pay over $200 for a running 472... keep looking...besides a motor that old should be rebuild...look for a 1970.... you will like that year best..

$200??? wow stuff must be cheap in Mass. If you can hear it run and it is sooo complete with carb, alt, dist, water pump etc, I think $500 is quite reasonable. The only thing is, if the guy is shady, he is probably paying $500 for the whole car and pulling a fast one on you. Just be careful, but if you really need the engine, I don't know how many options you will have. Good luck.

Actually I have a lot of brand new items that I got when I put the first 472 in. I got a new Q-jet, oil pump, water pump, alternator, starter, battery and radiator. My options are kinda slim, for some reason it's hard to find these engines down in Florida. Unless I just don't know the right people. I may just be looking in the wrong places.

I will give my two cents worth. A few months ago, I bought a 500ci engine from a 1970 Eldorado. It had completely rebuilt heads, new bearings, new cam, was suppose to be good to go. Got it for $500. I am putting it in my 1970 Sedan Deville. Well I decided to take it to an engine shop that was highly recommended. Come to find out, the rings were shot, the pistons were shot, it had two different heads, the head rebuild was crap, only had half the bearings replaced, the other bearings were shot. But it looked like an awesome engine when I bought it. I would say that if you want something that is going to last, plan to go completely through it the first time and do it right. Better to do it right the first time that have to do it again. Buy the engine with the idea of having it rebuilt. That’s all I got to say about that. Good luck.

Many of the cad 500's have been used up by the Airboat fellows in Florida, thus bidding up the prices in your area.
You may have to aim your search a little North, but the shipping expence with negate the savings.

Hey Johndeville... that 70 eldo motor has a 094 crank and 950 heads.. just the crank and heads are worth the $500 you paid... Great buy...

I got a call yesterday about a 500 out of a 75 for $250. I have to check it out still. It doesn't have a distributer but I was told it's not locked up and can still be turned over by hand. Where's a good place to get a rebuild kit?
