View Full Version : iPod integration with audio system?

I don't want to rip my CDs to the system hard drive because
it appears that it downconverts the audio quality to 128 bitrate.

I'd rather hook my iPod directly to the system via the included
connector and enjoy lossless audio.

Question....

When connecting the iPod, do all the playlists, songs and title/track
info. appear on the nav screen as they do on the iPod?

Can you skip around using controls on the nav/audio screen or do
you have to control it via the iPod?

Thanks!

Just for you, I sacrificed! My 40gb iPod was too old to work with this system, so I picked up a new 80gb iPod Classic. After 5 minutes of intensive and thorough testing, the music menus are fully accessible ... except for the 'back' function (noted in other threads .. you do have to press the car's Back button to use that feature - strange, but apparently true).
Press menu to select items, turn the knob to scroll through the lists. Very iPod-like. Don't know yet if you can get to movies or audiobooks ... need another 5 minutes or so of intensive testing! ;-}}}

That's good to know. I thought I read somewhere that the system did not work with the ipod classic.

Here's the tech specs from the manual. I believe the new iPod that's called the "iPod Classic" (6th gen) does work, but older ipods don't (4th gen and before, basically anything without video).

This feature supports the following iPod models:
• Fifth generation or later iPod
• First or Second generation or later iPod Nano*
* For proper operation, make sure your iPod has the
latest firmware from Apple®. Your iPod firmware can be
updated using the latest iTunes application. See
www.apple.com/itunes.

I plugged my wife's first gen Nano into the system and it works beautifully. Superb integration. From everything I've read, it will not display video from your iPod on the screen, though I haven't tried it yet.

My I-pod is a 2004 model not sure what Generation, but it does not have any vidio and its 20g. And it works great with the CTS.

Sounds like a 3rd or 4th gen, probably 4th. Definitely not a 5th gen (5th gens were 30gb or more).

My 20G generation 4 works fine. I would think even older generation iPods would work as long as your iTunes software is updated. There was a dock change around generation 3, so the cable furnished by GM will most likely not work. If you have a generation 4 or older and have never updated iTunes, that may cause a problem. I do not have an older one to try this, but I'm sure someone does. We cannot get video from the iPhone, or 5-6 generation iPod, not even in park.

Hey another iPod question as I am not even certain my 40GB classic iPod
does this or not....

We all know you can shuffle all the songs.

However, can you shuffle within a particular playlist ONLY? Can you
do this function through the NAV screen?

So, say I only want to hear my playlist of BEATLES songs, but shuffled,
will the NAV allow me to do that?

The battery is busy dying in my 40gb, but when it did work & I had it connected to the CTS, the songs selected via the iPod itself would play, but there was no control of the iPod available via the Nav system. The only way I could control the 40gb iPod was to use it's own controls.
With the new iPod, most iPod controls are available via the Nav screen & the Menu knob on the center stack.

So, I have a 4th Gen Ipod with the most current firmware installed. When I connect in my 2008 CTS, i get a message that the head unit is "searching". I obviously knows something is attached. IT does not ever find anything.

Anyone else with this issue?

I have the U2S (non-Nav) audio system with iPod integration included. I don't know if the system with Nav has the same issue, but my biggest beef with my system is when I want to listen to an album by a specific artist. On my iPod Classic, I can select "Artists", select an Artist, then select "Albums" and get a list of albums only by the artist I selected. This narrows down the list considerably from my 400+ albums on my iPod so I can actually find the album I want to play.

However, with the CTS system, when I select "Artist" and select an artist, I do not have an item on the resulting submenu for "Albums", so I can only see all the songs by that artist I have on my iPod, regardless of album. And when I select "Albums" on the CTS menu, I only get a list of the 400+ albums I have. So the only way I can play a specific album is to scroll through hundreds of album names until I find the one I'm looking for -- very unsafe and a PITA!

I fed this back to the Cadillac survey person who called me a couple of months ago as a big usability issue, including a safety driver-distraction issue that they must fix, and requested that they should release a firmware upgrade for existing systems which I know they can do via CD.

This issue annoys me everytime I use my iPod on my CTS. That and the "back" function that does not really take you back to where you were on the previous menu (another smaller annoyance and also a PITA).

Can anyone help me with my iPod to Deville? My car is a 2000 Deville with the steering wheel shifter, and I can not find the connector to tap into. The system is no Bose or how can I tell witch type do I have. I have a CD/Tape player that is stock and the car came with 8 speakers.

The iPod wasn't even released until October, 2001, and it wasn't until around the 3rd generation (April 2003) or 4th generation (July 2004) when they switched to USB that they started to be compatible with car stereos.

You may be able to use a tape adapter for a discman to connect it to your DeVille, but you're not going to have the integration the CTS has. If a tape adapter doesn't work, you could use one of those transmitters.

There are ways to plug into old radios.
Unfortunately the 2000 deville is different I think.
In any event here is a link to a system that works for some.
Note that deville support ends at 1999............

But there is a tel # for support and they may be able to help you........
