So I picked up my new Blue Chip over Cashmere CTS4 on Friday night. It is equipped with Nav, Ultraview, Lux 1, Performance Package, Polished Wheels, Wood 1 and 2, and spare tire. The only thing it doesn't have is Lux 2.

Unfortunately, on the afternoon that I picked it up, it snowed about 10 inches here in Mass. I drove what usually takes about 1 hr to Rhode Island to pick it up and bring it home, but it took me over an hour and a half because of the conditions. I saw many cars slipping and sliding all over the place on unplowed roads, but the CTS never missed a beat. Man am I happy to have AWD. So it passed it's first test in very inclement weather.

Interior: I love it. The automatic climate control works extremely well; I haven't touched anything except the temperature control to stay comfortable in over 200 miles. In my BMW, I was constantly adjusting the fan, direction, and temperature to stay comfortable. I love the Onstar, and the hands free calling is great. I can't wait to get the Bluetooth capability that I keep hearing is coming. I don't like the Exit feature on the drivers seat, and have disabled it. The seats are very comfortable and the seat heaters work quickly. I don't have the sunroof noise that many have complained about, but I am feeling the vibration from the shifter and the gas pedal at highway speeds. I'll keep an eye on that. I simply am blown away by the cockpit feel, particularly at night. The LED ambiance lighting is very nice. WOW am I happy that I didn't lease a C class with that $hitty interior. I love how the gauges cycle when starting the car.

Nav: I'd read many posts about how bad the Nav is before picking up the car and wondered if I'd made a mistake. However, it hasn't missed a beat yet, albeit with limited use. I have tried purposely to fool it but it quickly recalculated the directions. I like how the voice announces the next street, something my Garmin doesn't do. I love the startup process it goes through when starting the car, ending up with the Cadillac logo. I agree that the radio should mute when the voice is talking, and I keep accidentally turning the voice down when it speaks while trying to turn the radio down to hear the voice! But I will get used to it. I still have a lot of reading to do to figure out the voice commands; I've played with them a little bit with limited success. The Bose system is simply the best car audio system that I've ever owned....it's that good. My Porsche has the $1800 Bose system and it sucks in comparison. The iPod connectivity is great, and so are the touchscreen commands. I haven't played with the HDD much yet, but I look forward to digging into my CD collection to start ripping my favorite songs. Should take a few weeks to get them all in there. I wish the sound system controls on the steering wheel were on the left side...because I'm right handed and hold my cellphone with my right when I'm not using my handsfree, it's more convenient to have the audio controls on the left (save the driving and talking is unsafe, thanks).

Performance: The performance of the 3.6DI, while not breathtaking, is more than enough. The automatic is very responsive, and shifts very firmly in manual mode. It won't shift on it's own at redline while in manual mode, something I found out today! I love how it blips the revs when downshifting, although sometimes when trying to engine brake, the revving makes the car surge forward a bit. The exhaust has a nice little growl to it. The steering on my FE2 car is very tight and responsive. The Xenon headlights are EXCELLENT, and the way they turn with the steering wheel is a great touch. I hate DRLs (I'll decide when to turn on my headlights, thanks) so I'm constantly rotating the switch to "off" during the day.

Appearance: The outside is breathtaking. The front bumper and lower spoiler, as mentioned elsewhere on the forum, are verrrrrrrrry low and will need to be watched carefully. I don't like the placement of the front plate, and will do some research on the best way to remove the bracket that holds it. The 18 inch wheels are nice, but the brake calipers aren't very attractive. I wish Cadillac had done something better with them, such as black powdercoat, etc. My blue chip paint had some swirls in it from the dealer's prep department...the manager agreed to reimburse me for a full detail from my detail guy as I didn't trust them to touch the car again. The Cashmere interior is going to be difficult to keep clean, but if kept up with should be fine. I'm still deciding if I'm going to "debadge" the CTS4 and the 3.6DI badges on the back...I like a nice clean look. I like that the radio antenna is in the rear window, and the only antenna is the "fin" on the roof for the XM and Nav.

Sorry for the long winded post......I'm sure I'll think of more items to mention but my hands are getting tired from typing! :o

Contratulations! I can pretty much second all of your comments about the CTS as well.

There do seem to be a lot of complaints about the Nav, but like you, I have yet to experience any issues....hopefully it stays that way.

08CTS: If you like the car this much and it's this new, it should be even better for you as it breaks in. Mine got smoother, more responsive and more powerful. And you taught me a few things about the manual transmission mode. Thanks.

i never cared for DRLs either, but i actually like them kinda...at first i started turning them off, but it's been kinda cloudy & raining a bit over here as of late, so they're perfect for that. U don't have to turn on the HID's and can just let the DRLs take care of it. Also, when i was going thru a canyon when i first got it, a sign said "Turn headlights on next 7 miles" so the same thing w/ that.

I just let the automatic light control do it's thing, and the rainsense wipers are great as well.

Haha I've never liked the auto wipers either....although, if these work as they're supposed to maybe I'll be swayed.

I agree with you about rainy, cloudy days. I'll just leave 'em on. But on sunny days, I'll continue to shut them off...

It's funny, this debate over DRL's... The same argument happens over in the Corvette forum. I personally love the way they look and if they increase the visibility of my car and help prevent someone from pulling out of a side street or driveway into my path - even just once - then they're worth it to me. On the 'Vette, I think they just look badass, period. On the CTS, I think they look elegant. No complaints about DRL's here...

I like the DRLs and think the Bose is great. MUCH better than my last Nissan/Bose. MUCH Better. As to breakin PJL, it's probably too late. He's already seen red line in it........

Thanks, and thanks for the tip on debadging!

I hear you, and to each their own. I will certainly admit though, the DRLs have come a long way since the days of the bright amber parking lights...

My car had 700 miles on it already when I leased it...apparently it was an executive car so it was already broken in. Honestly, I'm not worried about it because in 24 months I'll either get a new one or move on depending on the whole experience. But so far so good!

So, there's a constant question that keeps popping up...

Does the NAV lower the radio when giving voice commands?

I seem to get the impression that it will only if the radio is exceedingly loud
in the first place.

I just drove from New Jersey to Key West and the NAV worked great, ever the recalulations worked, just a little slower than my Garmin.
I did not notice the radio being lowered when giving voice commands.

I have not noticed the radio being lowered at all for commands. But I'm used to having the radio low when listening to my Garmin, so no biggie.

08CTS, CongraTulationS on your new car.
I enjoyed reading your initial impressions of the CTS. Great review.

Referencing your comment about the gauges cycling on engine start.. yes, that's a cool effect. You'll find also that the adaptive forward lighting system performs a test cycle [moves the projector xenon headlamps to their extreme inboard & outboard positions] at time of engine start.. (i.e. when low ambient light conditions cause the xenons to be activated at time of engine start.). That's also a pretty cool effect.

Regarding front LP bracket plate mounting alternatives, check out this thread for mounting the LP bracket down low below the painted facia:
http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums/cadillac-cts-forum-2008-beyond/119480-2008-front-plate-alternative-aftermarket-ideas-3.html
Several members here have done this, and are very happy with the results.
BTW.. colored plastic inserts/plugs can be obtained to plug the holes in the facia of your CTS should you decide to remove the LP bracket from its current position. There have been a couple of posts covering that topic, complete with photos.

Good luck with your new CTS. E N J O Y ! !

Thanks Rab, looks like I have some reading to do! How did you remove the plate holder's rivets, did you have to drill them out?

RAB

08CTS, I never had to remove the plate holder's rivets, because the plate holder was never installed by the dealer.
Long before my CTS arrived at the dealership I advised them that I did not want the LP bracket applied. As soon as I heard that my CTS came off the truck, I went to the dealer and removed the bracket from the trunk of the car (just in case they had forgotten about my instruction).
To remove that bracket now you'll have to drill out the four rivets, and then either plug the holes or have them taken care of by the body shop. Obviously plugging the holes will be far easier and cheaper than the alternative.

I've provided below the photo link to a recently posted image (thank you Clarkster!) of a car that had the four LP bracket holes plugged. I think it's a very good solution - looks good too.
Let me know if you have questions regarding the low mounting of the LP bracket. You can use cable ties for the application (my original method when I posted the mod instruction earlier on), or LFG's great enhancement on the theme - using toggle bolts.

in my experience the nav system will reduce the audio volume when providing voice guidance and when the "turn now" chime sounds. it does not mute the audio (to me mute means turn it down to zero). but the audio has to be kinda loud before the effect kicks in or becomes noticeable.

Thanks, RAB, that photo looks great. I think this is the path I'll take. I'm a bit worried that when I take the plate holder off, there will be scratches and damage behind it because of road grime and vibrations from normal driving. I'll keep my fingers crossed...
