View Full Version : Mobile 1 not used at my dealer. Should it matter? When I took my car in to the dealer to have an oil change, I asked if they use Mobil 1. They said Yes. When I looked at my service receipt, it says Valvoline synthetic.
Should I care? Does it matter?
Thanks. spaceman78 02-24-08, 02:37 PM will not hurt the car. that is a good oil .....i use that oil in my 2004 cts never had a problem.....my 2001 cadillac eldorado said to use valine oil....... It may, it may not. Mobil 1 is proven. Some people swear for Valvoline though. I read oil discussion board and there to be consensous that M1 is a very good oil, expensive though. I have been using M1 on my last two cars. The Murano whrn traded in had 94,000 miles and engine was like new. I do not believe that using Valvoline synthetic would hurt the car....all modern oils do the job well... Musicman 02-24-08, 05:50 PM As long as the oil meets GM4718M (Corvette) specs, you're OK. urbanski 02-24-08, 06:09 PM right. check what spec is recommended in the owners manual, then grab the Valvoline bottle to check that it matches. if not, they need to fix the problem...which had you put wrong spec oil in yourself could have voided yoru warranty ewill3rd 02-25-08, 07:19 AM Look at the valvoline website, check the GM specification listed on the type of oil they listed on your repair order.
If it meets the spec noted above you are fine.
I am pretty sure the Valvoline pure synth meets that spec.
I prefer Valvoline myself, but nothing wrong with Mobil 1. Valvoline is an excellent oil.
Their dino oil can withstand high temps much better than Castrol oil and the others I tried with my hot running TPI IROC, I am sure that their synthetic is made to the same high standards. Zymurgy 02-25-08, 10:29 AM Valvoline Synpower (full synthetic) does NOT meet GM4718M. Per the Valvoline website, it meets the following specs:

*Except European Fuel Economy They did put Valvoline Synpower in according to the repair order. Should I demand Mobil 1 be installed? PygmySurfer 02-25-08, 12:45 PM They did put Valvoline Synpower in according to the repair order. Should I demand Mobil 1 be installed?
You could ask them to provide documentation from GM which shows that Valvoline Synpower is a suitable substitute for Mobil 1, and if not, that they redo the oil change with the proper oil this time. urbanski 02-25-08, 12:59 PM and get them to extend your drivetrain warranty to 6/100 for throwing inferior oil in it....hell, may as well have them tow it back to dealership to avoid running the engine (extreme, yes, but it proves a point) ddawson 02-25-08, 02:34 PM You could ask them to provide documentation from GM which shows that Valvoline Synpower is a suitable substitute for Mobil 1, and if not, that they redo the oil change with the proper oil this time.
Can't they read. The oil cap says MOBIL 1. ddawson 02-25-08, 02:35 PM You could ask them to provide documentation from GM which shows that Valvoline Synpower is a suitable substitute for Mobil 1, and if not, that they redo the oil change with the proper oil this time.
Can't they read. The oil cap says MOBIL 1. What about that don't they understand. Southern 02-25-08, 02:42 PM There are several oils that are approved by GM for that particular standard such as Penzoil Platinum for instance. Valvoline Synpower OTOH is not pone of them. rebelduke 02-25-08, 02:56 PM The following info was copied from another site:
Only six brands are on the list of GM4718M approved motor oils. Any idea why so few? Is it too tough of a standard for brands such as Amsoil,Royal Purple, Valvoline, etc., to meet? Or, do these companies, for some reason, feel that it is not worth pursuing?
And the response..........................
Good question. I emailed Valvoline and here's the response I got from them.
" You will not void your warranty using Valvoline SynPower products as your motor oil, as Valvoline stands behind this specification 100% for your Corvette. We are not listed on the GM Technical Bulletin simply because we are not a GM Approved supplier for this specification. We still recommend our products 100% for the GM4718m for Corvette and Cadillac models".
And here's a response I got from Conoco Phillips when I asked them about Kendall full synthetic.
"There was a problem when API went SM and ILSAC went GF4. The specs for the GM4718m changed slightly and our full synthetic oil which previously met that spec no longer meets it now. We are working to correct this, but at this time we do not meet it.

You are too full of knowledge. I love this forum. Zymurgy 02-25-08, 03:04 PM ...I emailed Valvoline and here's the response I got from them.

Valvoline is blowing smoke. They "stand behind this specification 100%" and "We still recommend our products 100% for the GM4718M". So what? Bottom line is they do not meet GM4718M spec. GM warranties your car, not Valvoline.
At least the Kendall answer was honest. They don't meet the spec. Valvoline tried to pretend that it doesn't matter. When I took my car in to the dealer to have an oil change, I asked if they use Mobil 1. They said Yes. When I looked at my service receipt, it says Valvoline synthetic.
Should I care? Does it matter?
Thanks.
Is this a Cadillac only dealership, or a combined ? (GMC/Chevy/Cadillac)
I think you should care because service departments make mistakes and do things like fill engines that hold 6 quarts of oil with 8 quarts (cough). Mine did it to my CTS-V twice. If they told you they use Mobil 1 then I would ask them why your service receipt says they put Valvoline in your car. Especially if it doesn't say it meets the GM spec called for in your service manual.
It's more about being able to trust the people in your service department and what they tell you they do to your car. Unfortunately for me I'm finding I have to watch them like a hawk because of repeated mistakes. urbanski 02-25-08, 03:18 PM i'd LOVE to see anybody try to make a claim against Valvoline for an engine replacement... It may be a clarical error in thier billing. I doubt Valvoline will hurt a thing, but It is worth a question to the service department. You're fine. Stop freaking out. You're fine. Stop freaking out.
I don't see Mr. Goodwrench after "Super Moderator" so may I inquire as to what Jediesque knowledge is your statement above based upon? ;) Neosonic 02-25-08, 11:17 PM Look at the valvoline website, check the GM specification listed on the type of oil they listed on your repair order.

sorry again.. I dont want ot hijack. ewill3rd 02-26-08, 07:31 AM I would request Mobil 1 when you return, express your concerns to the management that the oil they are using doesn't meet the manufacturer's specification as outlined in the owner's manual.
neo, I got your back ;) It is a Cadillac dealer only. I have to take it back for another reason, so I will ask them to re-do with Mobil 1. Ron Price 02-27-08, 12:04 AM If you asked for Mobil 1 then they should honor your request or tell you beforehand that they can't give you Mobil 1. If they don't provide you with a satisfactory solution/answer, find yourself another dealer!! |
