View Full Version : my CTS top speed story, whats yours? bijanmaleki 05-18-04, 04:47 PM Last weekend, (around the time of the races posted in the kills forum), I picked up my friend and we went out for his first ride in the CTS. He was wondering how fast it was, and just to freak him out, I pushed the metric button (this kid is not the brightest in the world), and hit 160kph. He was really excited, until I told him what happened. A little later, while cruising on the highway, it was strangely clear of traffic. Once again my friend asked how fast it would go, so I said, lets find out. Now on my caddy, if it is shifted into the lower gears, it shifts at 7000rpm, versus the normal 6500. So I slow down, and put it in second, taker her up to 7k, shift to third, 6800, shift, (the first three gears on my car seem really fast, up to a hundred, then it hits fourth, and seems kind of slow), hit fourth and like 5000rpm, and proceed to take her up to an indicated 145 mph. Now I thought that the limit was at 143, but in the recent road and track article it said 149? Anyways it was still climbing, and it took about 25-30 seconds to get up there, when I decided to slow down. In that entire time I past one car, four lanes away. It was fun, but I'll never do it again for a while, if ever in this car. I just wanted to see what she would would do, and I got real close to seeing, the risks at the speed are just too great. I love the car so far, and the way the engine sounds and feels. I had a video of the car doing a couple of longs smoky burns/slides/doughnuts in a parking lot, but lost them after transferring them onto my computer. Have to do it again. Anyways, anyone else get up that fast, and how did you feel about it? greyghost04 05-18-04, 06:18 PM Wow!

heh, you're lucky! i think, well in california, if they get you going over 100, its some jailtime. not that i would know, though... FastCTS 05-20-04, 07:57 AM Ca. VEHICLE CODE

The more you get caught, the longer they keep your license. denniscts 05-22-04, 09:51 AM Was coming home from NY drove past a NY State Troper who was in the middle taking radar I looked down and was doing 140 mph all he did was flash his headlights at me and never came out.
WHEW I was lucky or he figured by the time he got started I'd be 2 miles down the road:) :) gothicaleigh 05-22-04, 11:38 AM I was tagged going 140mph (have the ticket to prove it). Was a wide open stretch of road surrounded by field. It was nearing the end of the day and I just wanted to get home (returning from a business trip).
Well, I guess they have problems with speeders on that road, so they were clocking off a side road and picking people up with another car further down. The officer cuffed me and put me in the car (probably checking to see if the CTS was stolen), but wrote the ticket up for 85 in a 55 (which didn't help me a whole lot, but probably saved him some paperwork). My license was suspended because of it and to date it has cost me about $2500 in fines and legal fees.
Moral of the story? At 140mph, no one can read your plate, so just keep going. :p
That's a joke, btw... If you like to travel at high speeds, remember that the cost of such may be great (I try to think of it as cost of admission ;) ). greyghost04 05-22-04, 01:24 PM If you really want to go 140mph, drive to Montana. There is really no speed limit way out in the country. Send us the pictures though.:) Hey bijamaleki,
What type of engine is in your CTS? ctsvett 05-24-04, 03:22 PM driving here in Los Angeles is interesting... I am going 90 on the 405 (on the weekend) and the flow of traffic is going that speed.. The old "grandpa" car is doing 80 in the middle lane and getting pat in every direction. I am in my V and doing 100 int he left lane and CARS ARE PASSING ME. I stay at 100 to keep from getting a ticket (I think)..
Flow of traffic here is just plain fast!
I am about to buy a Valentine 1.... If you get pulled over, it was just bad luck I guess..
Reed bijanmaleki 05-25-04, 12:22 AM I have the 3.6

once is enough. under as safe as possible condition (nothig is safe when you go over 100, but i had two friends, one about half a mile up and another back w/ radio, making sure traffic is clear and road condition is fine, 2am) RobertCTS 05-25-04, 06:12 AM I was tagged going 140mph (have the ticket to prove it). Gothicaleigh,
Wow, 140 MPH!:bonkers: You've got guts( I was gonna say balls but felt it didn't apply here):p How long did you lose your license? Did you drive anyway:rolleyes: As I get older my fear factor increases. At 90 MPH I get white knuckles!
The scenery becomes a blur, my eyes are racing from mirror to mirror and I'm trying to monitor the radar detector, the speedo and the cop look out.
The fastest I've driven was at a NHRA Drag Race Track @ 100 MPH( 350, 350HP 65 Corvette) It's over in about 13 seconds so you don't have time to get nervous.
I still get the urge to street race but here it's $700 and your license. I too got caught. The Cops realize it's a stiff fine and even affects your car insurance. I was cited for speeding. caddieboy 07-02-04, 11:19 PM Fastest I ever drove wasn't in a CTS, but in a compact-size rental that maxed at around 90. Driving out of Paris, I found myself on a wide stretch of highway sloping down with sero traffic around me. My parents were half asleep and I just wanted to see how fast I could go because the threat of getting a ticket seemed slim (people were passing me all kinds and I averaged 85 most of the time, really pushing this car the whole time). I managed to touch 113 before letting go and coming back down. My parents didn't notice a thing except that I was sweating a bit and maybe I should put the air on.
Also, there's a joke that goes something like,...
Muhammed Ali was speeding down the highway in his Ferrari when the cops pulled him over and told him the fine for driving so fast was $500. Muhammed Ali said "Then I'll give you $1000, cause I don't want you to stop me when I'm driving back home!" Devil_concours 07-03-04, 12:07 AM you should have seen the gumball rally people. They get pulled over doing 130+ and one guy in f50 got pulled over doing 186mph!!!!
BTW CTS doesn't have much high end compared to northstar v8 Elvislives666 07-03-04, 12:54 AM You want speed? Try the Autobahn in Germany where 130kph is a guideline once you are in rural area's. When I lived in Europe I had a Mercedes Sprinter that could hold at 165-170kph fully loaded (100mph) Just so you know a Sprinter is a huge work van that has a 4 meter long wheel base and is tall enough that you can work inside and not hit your head at 6ft tall. 100mph ids the normal speed when traveling outside of cities. I also had a loaded turbo diesel passat variant that could go around 140-145 mph and would have cars blow by me flashing their lights in the left lane at speeds over 170mph. This would never work in America. One thing I noticed in California since moving back is everyone thinks they own the road and will go 60mph in a 65mph zone stuck in the left lane. Inconsiderate *****s... when you see me coming flashing my lights, please give me the right of way and if you don't and I pass you on the right please don't try to run me off the road. Oh and by the way check the stats, cars in Europe are traveling a lot faster on average due to higher and more lax speed laws yet they have much less accidents per capita. Wonder why? Better drivers? They don't issue a driving license in a box of Fruit Loops, you have to go to school and take very strict tests. I had been driving for 20 years in America but still had to take the mandatory 40 hours of driving classes. Did I mention it is expensive too? $1,500.00 to get all the training, testing and license. Anyway my novel is finished. :banghead: caddieboy 07-03-04, 01:52 AM You want speed? Try the Autobahn in Germany where 130kph is a guideline once you are in rural area's. They have way better roads, very smooth. I don't think it's as safe to go those speeds in North America. I agree though that people should take lessons on how to drive. It's shameful what passes for a driving test and getting licenced. | |
