: What's to do in a large city on the weekend?

When you are not into clubs and partying?

So I am sitting here in Atlanta, have the weekend (a normal weekend) to do whatever I want. I know tonight is pretty much gone now as far as to go anywhere, but I've spent the last couple hours reading about places to go, and haven't come up with anything, and now I don't want to just sit here for the rest of the night. I was thinking about going to see a movie, but I can do that anytime.

I've never been to a club, the atmosphere and mostly the music intrests me, but thats about it... the whole getting drunk and picking up girls thing dosn't.

Tomorrow durring the day I was going to go to the aquarium or underground Atlanta.... I've already been to the New World of Coke.... I'm not into sports at all, so none of that intrests me.

I went to a mall and walked around it a bit, see what its like.... I felt like I was in high school again, and man... the whole buy more stuff to show off as much as you can... it's crazy and that wasn't the high-end mall that was across the street.

I just don't know what else there is to do on Friday/Saturday nights in a city besides the clubs, I mean, is that all there is when people refer to the nightlife and stuff of cities.... is that why people prefer to live in large cities?

I wouldn't mind going to a nightclub just to see what it's like, but I've never been to one before and I'd be going alone... seems odd... like I said, I like music, alot, so that intrests me... but... I dunno, I guess it'd be better to go with other people.

ugh..... any ideas? it's 8:30PM now... I gotta get out of this hotel room.... though last time I did that (the mall, several hours ago) I couldnt wait to get back....

Where are you? Downtown? Buckhead?

Never spent any time downtown. Lots of good restaurants in Buckhead.

I'm in the airport area... so pretty much out of all the hustle and bustle of the city..... but I've got my car.

I was in the Buckhead area eariler... checked out Lenox Square mall.... I wanted to just get a hair cut.... sheesh "haircuts start at $68 and go up to $102 depending on style and experience of hairstylist" WTF!?!?!?!?!?!? I just wanted a $10 trim.

Wasn't going to even bother going to the "high class" mall across the street, marble all over and glass escalaters? I dunno... every single overpriced shop you can think of... no thanks... I just start to get disgusted with all that.

Walked around the rest of the mall to see what it was about... I guess I'm just not into the mall thing, I was happy to leave shortly after... then got to sit in rush hour traffic on 85 thru downtown.... at 3:00PM.... ugh....

So anything in particular to do in Buckhead, or any certain places to check out? Not familer with the area at all. Besides good places to eat (open to suggestions!) what about things to do? what about things to do at night?

One of my famous client's daughter went to Emory. She was smokin' and intelligent and personable. Add a dose of Southern Hospitality she inherited while there and that was one girl who had it all!!

Whenever I drove for her, we'd talk so long, we'd sit in the car for 5-10 minutes at her destination. If I wasn't sucking wind so bad financially at the time, I would've asked her out. And it wasn't so crazy to think she'd date a chauffeur, she went out with one of my co-workers for awhile.

I swear, if I ever settle down one of these days, I have this bizzarro feeling it will be with a Georgia girl...

Sorry, life story threadjack off...

I was wondering why this situation seemed all so familer.... then it hit me....

Same thing happened when I lived in Clearwater, Friday and Saturday nights were all the rage, yet because I wasn't into the clubs, it really didn't make a difference to me... atleast there, there was the beach, Pier 60 and other things to do... although I used to end up driving around listening to music most nights.

I guess I'm just not set for a big city.... it's nice to live near one, but I'm glad I don't live in it... still though, I'm here and I want to make the best of it....

Although it seems like I am going to just end up getting a McFlurry at Mickey D's, maybe drive around a bit then go catch a movie... something I can do anywhere, thus making being in the city redundent..... ugh.... but atleast I'd be getting out and doing *something*.....

Georgia girl? Man.... those that live in this state should get first pick!

Seriosuly.... there are a few of the down home souther girls around... but it seems very few and far between... I dunno, I've always heard about it, and I though Georiga would be crawling with them.... but dosn't appear that way....

I didn't even know what Emory was... I had to look it up, so it's a university? I guess I just don't fit in around here.... when I say I'm from NY people automatically think the city, I have to specify, no, upstate.... I guess I grew up in the country and thats what I'm used to.... I'd like to get a taste of this city routine, but I don't know where to start.... so I'm just sitting here letting the night go to waste even more....

It's sad when you think about driving home (hour and a halfish, 100miles) to do laundry and just to actually do something..... but that defeats the purpose of even being in the city on a weekend....heh...

Congrats, Rick, you've discovered the Big Secret: if you don't like to party til you drop and drink yourself into a stupor, there is no night life in the big city. However, if you like classical music, you might see if the Atlanta Symphony is in season and, if so, what's on the programme. Perhaps your hotel concierge can suggest a play or other theatre performance you might like. Also, it's a bit late, but Atlanta has a ton of spectacular museums. I expect it would be a more enjoyable trip if the gf was there.

You could be a serial killer, sell drugs, use drugs, steal things, urinate on things, blow shit up, start shit on fire, harass homeless people, gamble, wear dresses, decorate, sew, watch porn, call random people and hold conversations with them, join a gang, drive around and air guitar at stoplights, capture small animals and start them on fire and release them into the streets, get a hooker, get 2 hookers, plant trees, milk a cow, steal cars, write a book, read a book, read a book in the nude, make a scene in wal mart, get a hooker that may or may not have a penis, or you could do your taxes.

Go to a working man's beer joint. Order a short beer and when you're finished with it, turn it upside down on the bar in front of you. Around here you'll have plenty to do for the next several minutes. It's a challenge that you can whip anybody in the place. What's even more fun is to turn your buddy's glass over in front of him.

Congrats, Rick, you've discovered the Big Secret: if you don't like to party til you drop and drink yourself into a stupor, there is no night life in the big city.

It never clicked until this weekend, but that is exactly true.

"Nightlife" is nothing more then a term for clubs.... and for someone like myself that isn't into them, a large city dosn't offer me anything extra at night. I'd rather be in a smaller place that has live music or something.... Pier 60 was a great example of that.

Today was a sucess at doing something fun in the city though... yesterday was a disaster... man it was horrible... I went to Underground Atlanta... thought it would be something cool, but it was just like an indoor mall... I walked around a bit and I'm like what, is this it? I got some marginal Chinese food then left....

Of course I got stopped by a homeless person walking from the parking garage and then walking back.... I guess I just can't ignor something that says Hi... so I stopped... that was my mistake... the first guy insisted me on taking me to my destination, which I knew where it was, and the 2nd guy wanted to clean my shoes.... I was nice... of course they wanted money, I kindly said I don't carry cash on me (which I didn't have any, been using the debt card) so I offered to get him a lunch from Mickey D's across the street... odd, he said what would that do for him? he has food in his backpack... he wanted money...... if I was homeless and lived in conditions he said he did, and someone offered to buy me a hot meal, I'd take them up on it.....

ugh, that was just 2 of the reasons why I was so distgusted.... man, I coudln't even enjoy the day... I just left and went back to the parking garage... man, I can't explain what a sigh of relief it was when I finally saw my Town Car again... besides actually still seeing it there, it was just something I could relate to... I got in hit door lock a dozen times and just sat there for a minute.

To make the day not a total waste I did something I ended up really enjoying... I drove back home. I did laundry, checked the cats... but just wanted to get out... man that was the best thing i could have done. It's soo weird, when I finally pulled into the small town I now live in, I haven't felt that calm, welcome home feeling since I left NY.... just can't expalin it, but it sure was nice. Then I came back last night.

Car got 26.5mpg coming up, it got 27.3 mpg going home yesterday then 23mpg coming back up.... I was really shocked.... at least the 26/27mpg never saw that before, I dunno why it was lower that one time though (what it seems to normally be) all of the trips were around the same speed, no A/C etc... although the 23mpg was at night... still tho, it was odd.

Today was a total turn around though, went to this area that was pretty much hippie and stuff, but it was neat... I went because there were 3 record stores nearby.... actual records... so I got a bunch of new and a couple used records, and had some of the best pizza since I left NY.... overall I was very happy, and will be making that little adventure into a day trip in the future when I want to shop for more records.... the people were really nice.... even though there may have been a missing brain cell or three... but the whole area was really cool, relaxed, little outside bistros, just sit down and eat... I liked it alot... and it was nice to actually go somewhere and enjoy it. Yesterday was a horrible expereince and the day before at that mall was marginally better then yesterday.

Yup, and thats why I offered to buy him a lunch, or a coffee or something. Besides really not having cash on me, which if I did, I wouldn't give it for that reason, but I have no problem helping them, I don't see what $5 cash would do for a homeless guy vs a complete meal, unless it was for that reason. He just walked away.... Ah well, I tried.

Well I'll post up some various pictures of the weekend...

Driving thru downtown ATL.... two cars you don't normally see side by side in traffic...

I never seen soo many Porsche's in one area though, everyday I musxt see half a dozen different Carreras... I mean, do you really need a Porsche to drive thru Atlanta traffic?

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08008.jpg

The fun begins. This was only 3PM on Friday too.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08009.jpg

I only took TWO pictures while walking thru downtown Atlanta yesterday.... these are the only two....

I thought this was cool:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08012.jpg

Then I rotated right a little:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08013.jpg

Man, after I was thru with Underground Atlanta and the events that took place, nothing felt like coming home more then this site:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08011.jpg

So after all that, it was still early enough, I wanted to just do something... so I drove the hour and a half back home, did laundry, went to the rented house one last time, got some good Mexican food then headed back.

I coudln't believe it! But... check the odometer.... I was impressed with the car.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08014.jpg

Car is really dirty, I haven't cleaned it in such a long time, been using it for moving. Now that it's over I can spend some time to clean it up again.

60 miles later:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08018.jpg

Oh yeah, I go to Mickey D's, that means I'm cool and I am now an expert at extreme sports.....XXXTREME!!!! Eh, I wanted a milkshake for the ride down.

It's not really disc 1 track 1... but I bought the adapter that plugs into the factory sound system, gives me an aux input... so I hook up the PSP with all my music on it, put it on CD mode, and it plays the AUX... car thinks its playing a CD, and everybody is happy :)

No, but it was such a beautiful day.... 62* got up to 67 actually, but it was a perfect day, had the windows down. Nice ride, made me feel better.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08020.jpg

Great trip down and back :)

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e363/InoventionsEast/Atlanta/2-24-08021.jpg

I didn't get any pictures of the area I went to today... I just had a great time though... main goal was to go vinyl shopping... and I did... made out excelent! With the exception of the two Beach Boys albums (which are like new), everything is brand new prices were great too! Total of $85 in vinyl then $15 for the record brush... I don't have one, good to have. The Steve Miller Band album is a 180gram cut too, good stuff, it was only $10, the others were $4-$7.... new... coudln't believe it.

On top of that I had pizza that was made exactly like I was used to in NY.... though it wasn't advertised as NY style... but it was good, got to walk around a bit... I'll be making a day trip back there in the future :)

Got a bunch of various artists... songs I really like, club mixes and stuff... I'm happy.

back in NY there was Rhino Records... the first record store I went to, thats where I got alot of my stuff, though their used records were... used.

In Clearwater, well, Tampa.. was Vinyl Fever... that place was sweet, though I only went there 2 or 3 times actually, I should have went more... but thats where I bought my first NEW vinyl... and the club mixes and stuff... man what a difference!

Then here, these 3 places, Full Moon Records was my first stop, I got alot of stuff there, then Criminal Records I got the brush, and finally Wax n Facts, got more stuff there... the last 2 places are right down the street from one another in quite a strange area... it was cool though.

There is a Vinyl Fever in Tallahasee, I want to make a weekend trip some time and head down there, go to Vinyl Fever and also check out the Gulf beaches in the Florida panhandle, its only 4.5hrs away or so, waiting for it to get warmer.

But, these 3 places are 1.5hrs away, maybe 2 if there is traffic, so plenty doable in a day... get some good pizza, have fun.... sounds like a winning plan to me :)

Nobody carried cartidges though, my old Shure is well worn... well the one place had a very limited collection, so I'll be ordering a new cartidge for my turn table online, then I'll be set :)

Next time just PM me and I'll show u a good time or try at least. U could have came w/ me fri to my usual bar with the guys from my office. Its a cool spot that gets a college crowd in the evening (Emory mainly). best part is they have a members only basement my office is privied to so when it gets too wild upstairs we go downstairs and drink top shelf liquor and smoke cigars. I in the Atlanta Financial center next to Lenox mall, and yes the porsche is so common around here that unless its a turbo or a speedster I dont even glance.

In all seriousness next time u r in town for the weekend dont hesitate to PM me we can go grab a beer then regardless of if something exciting happens u got out the hotel room, and I can advise u against things like the Underground ahead of time.

I would offer to grab a drink w/ u tonight but this girl I'm dating got fired from her internship at the Senate today so I must console her, but we may end up at a bar...

Yeah its a ecentric area with ppl from our generation that u could consider "hipsters" I guess; the alternative crowd. When I was in HS they were the punk rockers, by the time I got to college they were emo, and now they are just socially awkward.

Lots of cool different stores there, and a good scene of bars. Next time u r in town on Sat night I got the spot for u. Johnny's Hideaway. Its a small speak easy in Buckhead where the MILFs/Cougars come to prey. I hear nothing but good stories coming out of there from my buddies, I've never been.

What about NY?

About the concert.... I thought about that, so I checked ticket master if anything good was playing in the area.... only thing was Van Halen, which I decided to pass on.... good thing too cause they decided to post pone it until a later date the same day of the show.

As for small live band in a restarant.... well, it helps when you know where to go to eat :) The hotel has a buffet style breakfast, and everynight is a different meal for dinner, also sorta buffet style, but only Mon-Thurs.... so I'm covered there. Everyday durring the week I've been going to Scholztky's (spelling?) deli.... I was going to change it up and go to Arbys or Wendys, but I can always go there, never been to this deli place and it is darn good! So I made sure to eat there enough to hold me over for a long time. So then on the weekend was my failed attempt at doing something fun, or finding a good place to eat... well, I take that back... Sunday I had fun vinyl hunting in that really weird physidelic punk rocker hippie area.... and had some darn good pizza too... I should go back there before I leave....
