View Full Version : Broke down and stranded Yep....thats right, just sitting in a parking lot about to leave and the car started running really rough>> DIC said engine power decrease. Engine would not respond to the pedel and it died  Ended up having to get it towed to the Dealership. Thanks to Sewell in Grapevine Tx. for not only getting the wrecker there but staying late to give me a loaner car. Any ideas on what it could be? Any body else with this problem? Under 3000 miles and THIS???
..........Sorry..I just had to tell someone.
Jeff proexpert 02-21-08, 11:55 PM Did the OnStar work, and did you use it?
Sounds like an electrical problem to me. My Corvette had a similar problem with a pinched wire under the plastic engine covers. Onstar worked and I used it. They could not do any diag. because it would not stay running. My check engine lite came on today. Car seems to be running OK...... so far. Onstar said that the ECM has a fault and I should get the car to the dealer pronto. Hope it lasts thru Fri. I've got a big presentation first thing Fri AM.
I've got 4200 miles on the car. I had no advance warning, no engine light nothing.... NJRonbo 02-22-08, 05:52 AM Sorry to hear this -- particularly for the lack of help Onstar (not necessarily their fault) Good luck with the repair. Keep us posted on what caused the problem. Sorry to hear this -- particularly for the lack of help Onstar (not necessarily their fault)
Actually Onstar did a very good job. they contacted my dealership before they closed and got the ball rolling. My big complaint is with Cadillac 24 hour service. When Onstar got them on the line there was a 2 mile difference on my dealership and one in another town. They said they had to take it to the closest. Then they said they would take it to mine (2 miles further), but I had to pay the overage and then asked how I was going to pay. I asked them how much the overage would be and she did not know, but needed to know how I would pay it. I hung up with her and my dealership scheduled a wrecker out to me. NOT ON MY WATCH 02-22-08, 02:28 PM Sorry to hear about your trouble, GS345. Hopefully they'll fix it and it will never happen again. acuraman 02-22-08, 03:31 PM My '08 CTS has experienced another kind of "down-time" issue 3 times since I picked it up in December. The audio system (ALL OF IT) and ONSTAR died while driving. Any attempts to "re-boot" failed. Each time I had to park the car for 5 minutes and re-start. Subsequently, when I did get through to ONSTAR, they found no diagnostic evidence that my system had crashed. Strange...and disturbing! My car had less than 700 miles when I started having trouble. Your situation may be similar to mine. My problem was cured after Sewell replaced the Electronic Throttle Body assembly - no troouble since. Sewell will make it right.

We did fuel up earlier. I keep thinking about that. But we get gas at the same place about everytime. UPDATE: Dealership just called and said it was the fuel pump in the tank. Seems that there are two of them on the DI engines, one LV pump to get it to the engine and a HV one to boost the fuel pressure for the engine. Bad news is they are on backorder :crying2: and they wont be able to find out for how long till monday. Southern 02-23-08, 03:43 PM Hope you have got a loaner or something. It has been my experience that when you combine Just-in-Time inventory with backlogged orders for the car, all the fuel pumps are spoken for.......and they are not going to go out to the assembly line and pull one off.......
Could be a long wait.
Hopefully I am wrong........... I hope the wait is not that long. Seems with a backorder situation, there might be a problem with the pumps??
Good thing is I do have a loaner CTS....bad news its a 07 :) Southern 02-23-08, 04:17 PM No, the pumps are backordered because the CTS is back ordered......... justgreat 02-23-08, 05:09 PM do you have the tendency to run the fuel tank down to less than a quarter tank? the pumps use the fuel as a cooling agent and i'm wondering if the level in the tank might have something to do with the pumps going south.
i also wonder if after one of the pumps failed and stopped feeding the other pump, that resulted in both pumps failing. it seems strange to me that both pumps would fail at the same time.
one last item; have you put any additives into the fuel tank since you bought the vehicle?

1. The car is my wifes and she always runs it low. When it was filled that day, it held 16.003 gallons.
2. Only one pump failed. The pump in the tank. The one at the engine is fine.
3. No fuel additives ever.
jeff cutter125 02-24-08, 12:45 PM Same thing happened to me, regarding the audio system. Entire Radio unresponsive. XM, CD, Aux Audio input, FM, nothing...
Pulled over to get gas, shut the car off, when I refired her, radio worked fine again. No problems since. 10,150 miles now. blue07cts 02-24-08, 12:55 PM Same thing happened to me, regarding the audio system. Entire Radio unresponsive. XM, CD, Aux Audio input, FM, nothing...

mine had done this same thing about 3 times. then after the last time (about 2 months ago) it had been flawless UPDATE: Dealership just called and said it was the fuel pump in the tank. I believe the same thing just happened to my brother-in-laws brand new BMW 535Xi. We were giving it a spin and the engine cut off virtually all power and went into "limp home mode". After it was towed to the dealership, the diagnosis was a faulty fuel pump. His car only had 500 miles on it.... justgreat 02-24-08, 09:25 PM 1. The car is my wifes and she always runs it low. i must have misread your earier post re the two pumps...it shoudln't hurt the pumps running the tank down low, but lots of stuff shoudln't hurt or happen....good thing about not using any additives. the only gas i will put in my sts is shell. in the owner's manual they talk about top tier fuels and in my neck of the woods, shell is the only top tier available.

06 sts6 Well Tuesday afternoon and still no word on the replacement pump. Dealership said the request was moved up to the next tier with GM??? Supposed to know something tomorrow...................................we shall see. :( :woohoo: Finally got it back!!!!! Its been almost two weeks. I totally forgot how nice these cars are. I was driving a loaner 07 CTS and it was nice........but WOW gotta love the 08's!!! :chill:
jeff Crackerzot 03-05-08, 11:07 PM Jeebus! Two weeks?! Heh. Now, I don't feel quite as bad. Here I lose the entire engine and catalytic converter and I might actually have my car back exactly one week to the day that it failed!!! Might have to wait until Monday or Tuesday, so I shouldn't count my chickens just yet...
But anyway, congrats on getting your car back! I miss my CTS. :bigroll: Southern 03-05-08, 11:46 PM 2 weeks is not that bad. Parts will continue to be difficult as Cadillac tries to balance production vs their obligation to support sold cars. Not bad Caddy! And its great that you got your car back, Jeff. mkaresh 03-06-08, 06:40 PM 2 weeks is not that bad. How much support should the sold cars need?
Interesting that the low pressure pump is the one that failed, as it should be tried and true. |
