I have a 76 Eldorado convertible with the 500 FI engine. One of the former owners somehow "broke" or disconnected the speedometer / odometer which means I don't know how many miles the car actually has, and I never know how fast I'm going. Honestly, I don't know if it's broken....I just assume it was disconnected on purpose. I really w ant to fix this, as this car flies on the freeway! Does anyone know if there's a common way that someone may have disconnected this, and if I can reconnect it myself without going to a mechanic? I don't see anything obvious (hanging wires) under the hood so any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I think the '76 still used a cable. Look at the trans for a cable with a screw on collar and make sure it is connected. The other end will screw in to the back of the speedometer. If both ends are connected, then the cable may be broken inside the sheath. As old as it it, it may be due to have the cabled pulled out of the sheathing and lubed.
