View Full Version : Door Locking I have a 2008 CTS with the keyless locking/start option. I have, on occasion (of course), experienced these two, strange problems.
1. Sometimes, after getting back into the driver's seat, having soon before gotten out of the vehicle, after closing the door, the horm honks three, short times. I only carry one fob. No door/trunk is open.
2. Also, sometimes, when the headlamps are on, after turning the ignition off, opening the driver's door, the chimes begin (as though the ignition key was not removed...remember, there's no key, OR as if the "non-auto" set headlamps were left on...remember, it's on "AUTO")???
Any ideas? I find noting in the manual. thanks bryson17 02-20-08, 01:53 PM 1. Sometimes, after getting back into the driver's seat, having soon before gotten out of the vehicle, after closing the door, the horm honks three, short times. I only carry one fob. No door/trunk is open.
It beeps 3x because it thinks you left the keys in the car. When you get out, it locks the doors automatically ~15 seconds after you walk away. If you leave the key in, or put it back in within those 15 seconds (by getting back in, or putting the key itself back inside) it thinks you're leaving your key in the car, honks, and doesn't lock the doors.
When I leave my keys in the car, people always wonder what that is. Zymurgy 02-20-08, 01:57 PM As for #1, that is normal operation. It is telling you that you "left your fob in the car". This occurs because you turned off the ignition, opened the door and then did NOT shut the door before you got back in and then shut the door. Since you only shut the door once, and it detects the fob it think you are leaving the fob in the car. One of the options that can be configured via the DIC is whether the car warns you about leaving the keys in. Ronster 02-20-08, 02:21 PM I for one would not turn off the key-fob-in-car reminder.
rg NOT ON MY WATCH 02-20-08, 02:28 PM Yeah, I would never turn off the key fob reminder. I think the rare honking at a seemingly inappropriate time is worth the sure avoidance of a major headache if you leave the fob in the car. The key-fob-in-car reminder is a good thing to have on the vehicle, and to keep enabled.
Having said that... I've discovered that when I'm out driving somewhere (with my wife also on-board) and I stop at a gas station to fill up, I always get the 3 short honks when I open the driver's door. Those reminder honks don't occur because I've left my keyless access fob inside the car... (au contraire - the fob is always in my pants pocket)... it's because my wife's key fob is with her (inside her purse), and the system is sensing that fob inside the car. I don't know a way around this particular scenario without disabling the fob-in-car reminder feature altogether. Further to my previous post, it would seem the best way to prevent the 3-honk fob-in-car reminder from occurring when getting out at gas stations, etc. (with the 2nd key fob on board with the spouse) is to leave the door slightly open upon exiting the vehicle. Then, several minutes later, on re-entering the car, start the engine prior to closing the door.
Will I always remember to do that? Probably not. :) Hmmm. Sounds logical. It seems to occur mostly when, as you suggest, I get out, don't close the door, then get back in. HOWEVER, on rare occasion, it happened AFTER I returned to the vehicle after a much longer period, after the doors locked. My theory...I may have OPENED the door, then , since it tends to close before I'm ready...push it back open. THAT may be confusing the sensor.
Thanks to all for your input. Any ideas on the OTHER phenomenon...that is, the chimes which begin on occasion after turning off the vehicle at night???

Those chimes ring whenever there's a serial killer in the backseat.
:) NOT ON MY WATCH 02-21-08, 01:26 PM I thought the chimes were an attempt by GM to ease you into a relaxing mindset as you arrived home. I believe the chimes only function when you've programmed a home destination in your GPS - the car knows you've arrived at home.
OK, I've had way too much coffee now. :bouncy: PygmySurfer 02-21-08, 03:22 PM Those chimes ring whenever there's a serial killer in the backseat.

I forget which car it was, but I saw a commercial recently where the car would detect if there was like a heat signature in the car, and report it to the keyfob as you approach, so you'd know if someone was waiting in your car.
Commercial showed a woman walking towards her car, the keyfob lit up, and she turned around and went back. Volvo. It has a heartbeat detector, and no I'm not kidding. Volvo. It has a heartbeat detector, and no I'm not kidding.
Yeah, the S80 (and perhaps other models). I think it should show your pulse on the dash. Maybe make you get out and walk if your heart rate is too high all the time. Ronster 02-21-08, 06:11 PM When I hear the chimes I start drooling . . .
