View Full Version : First Oil Change First oil change yesterday @ 3900 miles. Heading from New Jersey to Key West, Florida this week :cool2: and probably putting around 3000 or more miles round trip, so had the oil changed. I will keep a record of the over-all gas mileage and will post, I have the 263 hp motor. Can't wait to take the Caddy for cruise down the famous Duval Steet. :cool2: Crackerzot 02-17-08, 02:30 PM Have fun on your drive. I'll be interested to see your "real world" mileage results. Even though the EPA recently "revised" their testing methods, I don't think I'll ever really trust them again. I've got the same engine as you. So I'm curious to see how that 26 mpg highway estimate holds up. Cadillacboy 02-17-08, 06:05 PM Enjoy your trip and lookin forward to seein your results LFG, have a GREAT trip!
Take care, and keep us posted on the gas mileage, etc. if & when you can. Thanks.
 WhtDmnd04CTS 02-17-08, 11:21 PM may the force be with you
have fun

I'm at about the same mileage. Would it be a good idea to go to the dealer and ask for an oil change even though my DIC reads about 70% oil life left? I've heard rumors of "getting lots of debris in the first oil filter" due to new parts. Let me know what you all think......
BTW - 28 mpg on about 300 mi last week. 70-75mph, ~40 deg F, slight hills, lots of cruise control, all 6th gear. Much better than the 14.8 mpg I got on the last tank that was 100% city driving. Your dealer will change your oil no matter how many miles are on the car and doesn't matter what the DIC has on it......they make money on oil changes, they would change it at 500 miles if you wanted. My DIC was reading 74% and now it's reset back to 100%. On my 04' CTS I never went by the DIC, I would change oil at 4000, that also used Mobil 1 and it always had about 70% on the DIC @ 4000 miles.
As far as you last mileage, 28 is great. I did a trip to SC and back (1200 miles) when the car was new, got 24 mpg round trip and the car was brand new. I should get better this time (maybe). What motor do you have?? I have the 263hp. Last year I still had the 04' on a 3000 mile round trip and my best readings were 29-30 mpg, average was 25-26mpg.
I travel with a labtop, so I can keep the forum posted on the mileage. ;) bryson17 02-18-08, 04:43 PM bryson17

Yeah, I wouldn't think the dealer would turn me down, I was just wondering if it was a good idea to do it before the DIC tells me to (with 3700 mi on the odometer), and I wanted to hear some opinions on it because I've heard stories about how a new engine's oil should be changed early.
I'm assuming that the oil filter should be changed at least once per year whether DIC reads 0% or not.
I have the DI 304 hp, 6MT.
Have a good trip!
 If I went by the DIC, the oil would not be changed untill 15,000. Do yourself and the car a favor and get it changed. Get a new oil filter on every change. bobelew 02-19-08, 02:10 AM I'm at about the same mileage. I made my first oil change at 700 miles. The filter was pretty much filled up with mill scale (little pieces of metal) which is not at all uncommon. It is a byproduct of the engine manufacturing process. I have always changed my oil well before the first 1000 miles, and have always found various amounts of metal lodged within the filter. Running a new engine will all that metal lodged in the filter just scares the heck out of me!
Good luck with your new ride! ddawson 02-19-08, 11:02 AM If the mfg. would have said change the oil every 2000 miles, we would all be upset. Now he tells us to monitor the DIC and it may not need changing for 15,000 miles, but we won't listen. I don't understand. And the mfg. gives us 4 years bumper to bumper plus 1000,000 miles, warranty. Are we saying that the mfg. is wrong? The problem is we have the 3000 miles limitation on oil changes imbedded in our heads. Which is wrong as far as I am concerned. This is 2008. Listen to the mfg. 72_Fleetwood 02-19-08, 11:09 AM Here's what I'm thinking and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned here yet. I agree with getting the mill scale out after 2000-3000 miles but the oil still has a lot of life in it. Why not just replace the oil filter at that point and top off the oil? Because filter does not filters everything. Also if you are worry about manufacturing debris why not to go all the way and change oil as well. Inexpensive insurance.
This is what I have done. Now I will see but I am planning to change both oil and filter at 5,000 miles intervals. There is nothing more important for engine longevity than changil oil and oil filter.
This is my personnal opinion. I am sure others will disagree. ddawson 02-19-08, 12:15 PM If the mfg. would have said change the oil every 2000 miles, we would all be upset. I meant 100,000 miles. If the mfg. would have said change the oil every 2000 miles, we would all be upset. I think I'll split the difference. 3000 miles and I'll change the oil, but after that, I'll follow the DIC countdown. I agree, dawson, I've always changed my oil every 4000 miles in the past, even though the book said 7500. Now it's jumped up to 12k to 15k, GM engineers SHOULD know what they are talking about, right?!
As a rule of thumb, I think it is safe to change it at HALF the interval the manufacturer suggests. ddawson 02-19-08, 07:11 PM Part of the beauty of the car is the oil change intervals and the ability to run on regular unleaded gasoline. It all boils down to, we are creature of habit. We don't like change. Even if it's for the good. I'm a old "motor head" and I will still be changing the oil every 5000, no big deal to me. ;) If it wasn't Mobil 1, it would be 3000.
I had a 93' Ford F150 I gave to my son, I used Mobil 1 after the first 6000 miles (and my son still put's Mobil 1 in) and change after 5000. It now has 375000 on it and still sounds great, :cool2: but I know I won't have this car that long. :D Ronster 02-20-08, 02:06 PM Okay, where's the darn oil filter? This is somewhat rhetorical since I found the thread on CTS 03-07 forum with the pictures etc. And new posts that indicate it applies to the '08 too. But I swear it is not in the owners manual. thx to louiefl99, mofex, et al.
