This weekend rocked!!

Friday-
Tanner and I get in to Lemont around 4ish and go right to Gary's place. From there, we take the SLS over to meet John and Ryan at the Ferrari dealer. Then we go over to the Porsche dealer for a bit then meet up with Nicki and Jason up in DePaul, in Downtown Chicago.

Lemont is a very interesting little river town...1/2 of it seems to be big new houses, and 1/2 seems to be little old ones. Gary's place was on the outskirts, kind of in the boonies, but it was on a lot of land and it was near a highway overpass, which I thought was pretty cool. It was nice to ride in a 98+ Seville again. Last time I rode in one of those was MN-STS-Lover's '98 STS back in July/August. The people at the Ferrari dealer were EXTREMELY courteous, knowledgeable and easy going. The sales rep we talked to didn't mind at all that there were 5 of us in there, meandering their showfloor, taking pictures and living the dream, even if we never bought anything (aside from the $77 I spent at the gift shop ;) ). We got to look into their service department, and saw an F40 (1991?) that was on a hoist for some work, and a bunch of other awesome classics....'90 512TR (the one that came after the Testarossa), '67 265 GTB/4 to name a few, etc etc.

Afterwords, Ryan had to leave to go to midway to pick up Jay and Nicki, and we met up with them there. But before hand, we went to the Porsche dealer right as they were closing, and Gary scoured the lot looking for a few nice photos, but the best ones he took were a few tongue-in-cheek ones involving me, my t-shirt and the dealer across the street. :lildevil:

We drove all the way across town (and wow, what a drive!) to meet Nicki, Jason and Ryan at Depaul (I guess that's north of the Hancock Center?). We get up there, meet 'em at her dorm building and head out in the cold February rain to go get some grub....we went out for BW3 but didn't find it and went to Gino's instead for some DD pizza. Which was good, but nowhere near as good as Giordano's.

It's funny, Jason looks a lot like a young John Belushi (I mean that in a good way Jason!!) and I was told a look like Mclovin, which is pretty fitting actually, except his hair is darker, and he's probably taller.

Around 11:30, I finally get to Elias's and am introduced to him and his fiance, Nicole. They're both extremely nice, easy going people...probably the best hosts I've ever experienced. They have a nice house down in Downers Grove, probably 3 miles from John's place, and are truly wonderful to stay with. I got to see his Fleetwood the first night, and even sit in it (man, is that thing ever clean!!) and I got settled in and went right to bed.

SATURDAY

I wake up at about 7:30, get showered, eat and meet everyone at Bentley at 9 AM. The Ferrari dealer was awesome, the Bentley dealer SUCKED BALLS! Nobody there gave us any attention, and I asked the receptionist for a brochure and she kindly asked the most arrogant looking salesman where they kept them and the salesman promptly said in a snobbish tone "you have to go online to get them, bentley.com, and they're a hundred bucks per brochure" and then walked off away from us all. Prick. So we look around for a bit longer, and when Gary arrives, he gets his car valeted, and when we go to leave, we ask the valet to bring the car around. Well we're waiting for 10-15 minutes, and we go into their backlot to look at more cars, and we see Gary's Escalade sitting there, windows down, keys in ignition, so we jump in it and leave hastily. Pricks!

We head on down to the Lamborghini dealer, and are treated by an extremely nice salesperson/receptionist. She answered all our questions very nicely and let us roam the showroom unattended. Lots of great pictures were taken, and there were probably 20-25 exotics, mainly Italians were in there...Diablos, Murcielagos, Gallardos, Vipers, 575M's, early Viper, 996 Turbo, etc etc. An extremely nice experience!

Then we head on down for lunch, and what do we see??? A WENDY's. Which, as Gary has found out, is a prime time for photography, and I gained some new Facebook profile/ avatar pics. I had to have the :chad:, had to have it. And Gary had his first, and Tanner had his 2nd. That, my friends, was the best :chad: I've ever eaten. It's almost as though the Wendy's crew knew that I was coming, and had to prep *THE* Baconator to end all Baconators for me.

Is it weird that I just skipped over the Ferrari's entirely then stopped dead and stared at that gorgeous Town Car?

Looks like a fun time, but I sure don't miss the snow!

JRau

Thanks Benzilla, for the compliment on Lady Lincoln. She is meticulously maintained and cleaned. However, the Ferrari's were quite impressive!

I, too, had an absolute blast this past weekend, and it was a welcome relief from a busy and stressful time at my job! Gary's camera was impressive, and I couldn't believe how many pics he took!

I really enjoyed meeting some more forum fiends, and catchin' up with those at the Des Moines meet last summer.

Other fun memories include: Jesda's leaking air suspension in his Lincoln Navigator--the most HORRIBLE ride I've ever experienced--like a base model late 60's pick-up with small square tires in a war zone!

Seeing Jesda's expression when he realized he'd just put $95 worth of gas into that Navigator from hell.

Enjoying GDWriter's scathing commentary on the crappy imports at the car show.

Listening to the conversation of true car afficienado's--talking engine stats, body styles, etc. 96 stories in the air overlooking Chicago--and paying $12 per person for that privilege!

Trying to avoid every pothole and all wet areas of the road in Lady Lincoln. It was her second time out since November, and she was all clean--oh, don't get me started!...

Listening to the CadillacOwners.com men's choir: Jesda and his buddies from St. Louis, along with Chad, singing boldly along with the music, trying to keep from biting their tongues during the bone-jarring ride home from Chi-town!

Enjoying the ride to the car show in Elias' Buick Roadmaster--very fast, nice exhaust sound, and definately a different experience than you'd expect in a luxury car... Wow, did we really just hit 92 mph in a rolling start from 60 mph? Dude......that's pretty quick!

Meeting the outlaw of the forums--Jason :duck: (and his forum posting champion girlfriend Nikki!) The stories Jason told about his "rather adventurous" life, (read death-defying) and the numerous times he's been banned on the forum here--he's the :devil:in the black Cadillac jacket!

Hoping we could get away before Ryan had the cops in the parking garage at De Paul University should he slam his beat up Crown Victoria into a wall while tryin' to get the car to do doughnuts in a freakin' parking garage!!

Realizing I was sittin' next to an incredibly talented guy at Giordano's who's lived the American dream before age 50--the man, the legend--GizmoQ! Very impressive, very entertaining, very knowledgeable--all that, and funny, too.

Dislocating Kael's shoulder (figuratively speaking) as he gave me a bit of relief from holding onto my 450 lbs. of car brochures from the auto show--I had no feeling in my hands by then, and thanks again, Kael!

Buying my first brand new Lambourghini for just $25.00. Great price, even for a 1/18th scale diecast metal model!!:)

Lookin' forward to the 2nd Annual Midwest Meet in Davenport, Iowa, and to next year's Chicago Meet!

Strange meet. I thought a meet was a gathering in a certain place like a bar/restaurant to meet other forum members, have some good food/spirits, talk cars then maybe go outside and show each other the cars. Going to high end dealerships is a little strange to me. All that matters is that you had a good time though and appears you did. ;)

I~LUV~Caddys8792
02-12-08, 04:31 PM
Yeah, right. A bunch of tightly knit car guys going to look at beautifiul high end cars at friendly, knowledgable dealers is a strange thing to do for a car club meet. :bigroll:

4. Tried restarting by holding down the power button; power button did not do anything.
5. Turned off laptop using keyboard.
6. Laptop will not start up again; pressing power button does nothing. Battery is at full charge.

I'm hoping it's just a crappy solder job on Sony's part.

I was just looking at that, pretty cool. I could get $100 off a Macbook Air, but they're not very practical.I agree. I love my MacBook Pro, having moved up from an iBook G4. I was tired of white (gets dirty way too easily) and wanted the 15" screen over the 13". If you do a lot of Photoshop work with your photos, the difference in screen size and graphics card may make the Pro worth the extra cost.

MacWorld (http://www.macworld.com/products/mac/laptop.html) has some good reviews that can help you compare price/performance.

Gary,
I know if you get a Macbook at the Apple Store with your DePaul ID, you get a free ipod (not sure what kind). They always have that special display at the beginning of the school year at the Student Center.

Ooooo, nice, free Ipod. But I'm sure Gary's iPhone would dwarf any free iPod in size.

Oh, and to answer your question Gary, it was not Chris Bangle, but his drunken, retarted 1/2 cousin, Vinnie Bangle that designed the new Accords.

Dude, no offence Ryan, but I'd ditch your SLS like I'd ditch an overly clingy, high maintenance girlfriend with a bad case of Hepatitus C. It's just never good news for you, and it'll drag your wallet, and your self esteem down like a Led Zeppelin.

Plus, that neighbor of yours is out to get you as long as you've got that SLS. Get another nice late model N* Cadillac. :)

Yep, then again I've walked with my laptop to Union Station and back in 4 degree weather with no problem plenty of times, so I don't think the cold has much to do with it. My previous Vaio died after about two years, and I think this one is going that route too.

Chad, it wasnt that guy, it was the kid down the block, 12 years old with his friends.

His dad came to my house today, had checkbook in-hand and told me what happened.

I told him i filed it on insurance, just to give me 25 bucks for the gate lock his son busted.

Dad was really pissed about this, thanked me, and apologized. I told him "kids do crap, if it happens again, i will have to call the cops. I would not be worried about HIM doing it alone, but the friends that were with him were the issue".

Ok, here it goes

this takes place at a auto shop my father owns, rather big, has most dealer tools ect.

Once upon a time, i was looking at my gramps old van in back that he got killed in, trying to part it out. I saw a 98 seville SLS in the back with no engine in it. Interestingly enough, this seville will later become mine.

What happened is my dad took over a dealers warranty word, dealer provided this warranty along with financing he offered, guy ran the old engine out of oil and siezed it. My dad took this warranty job, halfway through the warranty job, the dealer said to hold off on ALL Work, mind you, engine is removed at this point. Guy ended up not paying his payments on the car, car got legally repoed, and the dealer transferred it to my dad and said here is the payment for the work you have already done (the cost of the engine removal was rediclious, as a ASE certed tech along with a ton of GM, ford, D/C, and other crap, he charges almost 120 a hr for HIM, his other techs are at around 90).
Either way, he takes the shell, supposedly ordered a new engine, was timeserted, i got a new trans (maybe, who knows) and some other stuff. The thing is, i dont know what is in there for sure. My dad claimed that he put 3600 engine wise into it and said that he thinks i would like it, he would give it to me for 1800, i say, meh, aint bad for 1800, paint is bad, but who cares, it IS a cadillac.

Either way, i got the car, i noted the following things:
The DTRs were on in ANY gear (code was thrown for TRS)
Rear Air suspension was stuck in top position, rear air shocks were shot, replaced with some firmer but better (hard to explain) shocks in the rear within a week.
The car had no idle rev limiter
Car had NO speed limiter (i can bury it past 120 in a SLS)
Car smelled like antifreeze (explained later)
Trans shifted like a bat outta hell

While, later on, i pulled codes and found the trans code, it was for the Trans range sensor, got replaced, got some other work done to it as well with a tech 2, to this day, i dont know what happened.
I got in the car, i started it. I stepped on the pedal, i figured meh, i will take it on the expressway, and I saw the RPMs just CLIMB like a BITCH and it shifted at almost 7k, car shift well, and it was like holy shit what just hit me.
Later that night, i got on a closed course raceway otherwise known as i55 south of joliet and nailed it, i got to around 135 before letting off in fear of cops, it was still pulling hard at that speed, but the front end WAS wobbly.

After this, i lined up with a 03 STS, i threw it in neutral, revved against this idiot a few times, he started hopping, i threw it into 1st, and completely smoked him, after this, i knew things were not normal.

After this, i toasted a PCM and did it a 2nd time. It was fixed quickly with a new PCM and a wiring harness change.

Last i know, the car had its rear 02 sensor changed, i think it was bank 1 sensor 3 for heater performance.

The guys at the shop just keep asking me if i like it WAY too often, and consider it there "baby" per say. The car has the tech2 hooked up way too often and other devices i usaully NEVER see used around the shop.

Ironically, i tried paying him for the car, he would not take the money.

I ended up paying 500 bucks for the car.

OTOH, archer road today had cars in ditches, i almost smashed the SLS doing around 30 in the snow. Carolla was in a ditch.

Neighbors kid down the street slashed my tires. I was going to race the w140 vs my crown vic but i hadda grab the SlS before shop closed up on saturday night because the tires were getting changed.

Kid just slashed them with his buds. Apparently someone told daddy and daddy did the right thing.

SATURDAY CONTINUED:

So after we got to the rest of the high end dealers and feast on Bacon8rs, we head out to Midway to pick up Gary from Oregon. Man, what a cluster**** that was! Gary wanted me to pick him up in the S320, so I drove out to pick him up, and in the process, got horribly lost, swore a lot, threw my phone a few times and pissed off everyone else that wasn't in my car. Either by getting them lost or not meeting them at the designated areas. So I'm practially in charge of trying to find Gary at Midway airport, and I've never been there before, and Gary really hasn't been down that street before, so he's got no idea how to get there, but he's using his iPhone to get me directions, and it gets us there, but not before I throw out every vulgarity and swear word in the English language, and even some in German! Grrrrr....I'm still mad thinking about that god forsaken Chicago traffic and the abysmal condition of Chicago's roads, especially Cicero avenue.

So we pick up Gary at the airport, meet up with Jason and Nicki, and head out to the Sears Tower, but we stop at Portillos for a famous Chicago style hot dog before we head out.

So we get to the Hancock Tower, and coincidentally, the 1st open parking spot I find in their ramp is next to another S Class, but the newer generation...the W220, so of course, pics are taken. We go inside for a bit, then are whisked away quickly and easily to the 94th floor....six from the top, which puts us at around 1,060 feet up. The views are SPECTACULAR, even though it's cloudy out, and it's just amazing to look down on buildings that are taller than anything in Minneapolis (our highest is the IDS Center, at 775 feet. The Hancock is 1127 feet, not including the spires. And the building I'm referring to that was directly to our south, was the Water Tower Place at 859 feet). Very, very awesome! See, I've had a thing for skyscrapers since I was about 11, and I've always wanted to go to the top of the Hancock or Sears, so this was great for me.

It was just to be able to talk cars with friends, 1060 feet up in the air, while looking out over the Chicago metropolitan area and Lake Michigan! And it begs the question to the rest of you "Where were you while we were gettin' high?"

On the way out of the parking ramp, we saw a lot of cool cars, old 5 Series, a few Jags, and a dark red '97 S600 Coupe (very, very rare and very desirable by "my" people!). As the dude in the S600 was leaving (or should I say racing?) out of the lot I yelled out of my car "nice car man!!!". Dunno if he heard me though. It was pretty hard to hear anything over his Corsa exhaust. :drool2:

From the Hancock, we went to meet up with Jesda at his hotel in Downers Grove. Lemme say one thing, Shatner definitely did those guys a favor there....their hotel was GORGEOUS! In automotive terms, it was the Cadillac of hotels. Then we met up with everyone at Giordano's and gorged on amazingly deep pizza! Nothing was as funny as seeing Jesda (and everyone else) jump when Gizmo hit the 8 train horns on his ESC-V as everyone stood in front of it. I think my ears are still ringing over that! Then when we were in the restaurant, Gizmo showed everyone his tablet setup for hisor his car.....man, that guy is so dang interesting, and so smart.

After great food and great conversations, we went back to our respective homes and relaxed until next morning. I took a few people over to Elias's and showed them his legendary Fleetwood, then went off to bed again.

We were doing about 72 on 55, and Elias went about 1/3 throttle and we shot to 90 like I've never experienced before. Elias says this is a 13 second car, and I believe him. With that, it's wiped out any belief of mine that OHV cars aren't as good as DOHC ones when it comes to highway passing power! We get to the autoshow around 10:15, and head inside ASAP. I mean frick, it's 4* out, we didn't wanna be outside any longer than necessary! We head into the foreign section first, and start looking at the cars, and meet up with everyone around 1 at the Cadillac display, and take lots of awesome pictures, and talk cars with friends for 5-6 hours.....man, what a great time!!! Nothing was funnier than hearing Gary (Gdwriter) asking us why we would ever want to consider a Porsche Cayenne when the Pontiac Torrent GXP is faster, better and assembled with much more cheap plastic! LOLOLOLOL! That was soooooooo funny! Gary and his snarky comments!!! It was almost as funny to hear what he was saying about the new Accords, especially when the Honda rep was standing 3 feet from him, but the Pontiac line takes the cake!

On the ride home, I got to ride in Jesda's Bouncigator. No air in the springs+ 8 occupants+ cheesy '80s love songs = awesomeness! I'm just suprised we didn't get rickrolled! :shocked2: The part that stands out most in my memory is singing along with Jesda and his friend at the top of my lungs to Oasis's "Wonderwall" and Radiohead's "Creep" on the way back. And seeing Jesda stand out there in the freezing cold, while pumping $90 worth of gas into his Bouncigator was worth my money too.

After that, we got to Elias's place around 7:15, got packed up and hit the road back to Minneapolis. We stopped once for a smoke/piss break in northern Illinois, almost got in an accident with a limo while merging onto a cloverleaf in the Northern Chicago metropolitan area, but by the time we got into Wisconsin, the cruise control was set to 69 MPH and I didn't touch the throttle or brake pedal all the way through Wisconsin! I got home by 2:05 AM and I think we woke all the neighbors when Tanner started his 196k mile '89 deVille in the -4* weather, after it hadn't been started since Friday morning. It sounded like 30 screaming cats!

On the way to work that morning, I refilled my tank and from Elias's place the night before, to my house, I averaged 20.9 MPG....which is shitty, but probably due entirely to the frigid temperatures. On the way down, I averaged 23-24 mpg, but that was when it was 38* out, not -4*.

Thanks Benzilla, for the compliment on Lady Lincoln. She is meticulously maintained and cleaned.

Enjoying GDWriter's scathing commentary on the crappy imports at the car show.

Trying to avoid every pothole and all wet areas of the road in Lady Lincoln. It was her second time out since November, and she was all clean--oh, don't get me started!...Now I know how your Lincoln managed to look so virginal in the crap of a Midwest winter. I should talk; Cruella is nasty-filthy, after two+ months of on/off rain, but the weather may be decent this weekend and next week, so I may finally get to wash her.

For those who missed my "scathing commentary" (I used to mortify a friend back in Phoenix with my snarky remarks at the Arizona Auto Show), here's a recap:

The '08 CTS is stunning in person — a total knockout inside and out. I want one bad. I'll have to wait a few years for depreciation to put one in my price range.
The '08 Chevy Malibu is also a looker. Very handsome inside and out, with an instrument cluster similar to the CTS. Were I in the market for a new car (I'm not), this would likely be at the top of my list.
Speaking of lists, Mercury's banner at the show, "You've gotta put Mercury on your list" sounds desperate. And lame. But considering their lineup is just a bunch of lame, gussied-up Fords, maybe it fits.
Speaking of lame, Pontiac's ads comparing the $29K Torrent GXP to the $45K BMW X5 and the $43K Porsche Cayenne (base models in the case of both Germans) are either hysterically or embarassingly stupid, depending on your view of Detroit in general and GM in particular. OK, so the Pontiac may be a few tenths of a second faster in 0-60 MPH. Big freakin' deal. Do you drive with a stopwatch all the time? The Torrent isn't anywhere near the same league as the X5 or the Cayenne. To make such a silly comparison only invites ridicule. Whoever came up with this idiotic marketing campaign should have his or her college degree revoked.
The person in charge of styling at Honda should get a new job cleaning out grease traps at a fast-food joint. The new Accords are all-around fugly. The side profile on the coupe isn't bad, but it has an ass the size of Albuquerque. Compared to the sleek '99 coupe I used to have, this new one looks insanely bloated. The sedan looks like another Chris Bangle hatchet job. Over at Acura, the new RL has the most hideous grille since the '58 Edsel. Actually, it's worse than the Edsel. And the taillights are poor imitations of the M-B S-Class.
This gigantic emblem business has gotten ridiculous. The one thing I don't like about the new CTS is the giant wreath and crest that look like they were lifted off an Escalade (which started this trend in the first place). Almost every car has a grille emblem that's twice the size it should be.
Mercury molded an oversized emblem directly into the cheap plastic grille used on the Milan. They couldn't even bother to make it look like it was chrome; it's just naked gray plastic. The workmanship (or lack thereof) is embarassingly bad. No wonder nobody's putting Mercury on their lists.
The production Dodge Challenger is another knockout. Kudos to Chrysler; it's about the only thing they have that doesn't suck for one reason or another. I only hope that there's enough of a market for the Challenger, Mustang and Camaro to thrive.
As for the rest of what I saw from Chrysler, it's easy to see why Daimler lost $30 billion in the failed merger. The Caliber has apparently appropriated all of Pontiac's leftover cheap plastic. And whose bright idea was it to make a Caravan R/T? Note to the geniuses at Cerebus: You can put 20" alloys on it and paint it arrest-me-red, but it's still a minivan. Aint nothin' gonna make a minivan sexy.
The front end of the Lincoln Navigator looks like Ford hired an orthodontist to design it. After two or three years, will the braces come off?
The Saab 9-3 convertible had the coolest cupholder. I couldn't stop deploying it; it just cracked me up. Still, it was great fun checking out all the cars. I actually liked a lot of what I saw. But it's much more fun to rag on the really bad stuff.

Ginos is the best late at night, their crusts are made the day before and dropped off in the morning. the longer they sit around waiting to be cooked the more they will ferment. So a Ginos at 11pm has a much different and imo better flavor than a Ginos at 6pm

Technically Uno's is the first Chicago style pizzeria(though the recipe was created by Rudy Malnati), but they have become a commercialized joke. Their pizza is awful and they are based out of Boston.

New York style is better then Chicago style.

So there  :D

Brett

Apples and Oranges. Chicago deep dish is more like a lasagna than it is like a pizza. Actually my favorite type of pizza is Chicago thin crust. The most well known of which(though not my favorite) is home run inn. From wiki:

In addition to Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, there is also a thin-crust pizza unique to Chicago, sometimes referred to as "flat" pizza.[5] The crust is thin and firm enough to have a noticeable crunch, unlike a New York-style pizza, yet thick enough to be soft and doughy on the top.

The crust is topped with a liberal quantity of Italian style tomato sauce, which is usually quite herbal or highly spiced, and typically contains no visible chunks of tomato. Next, a layer of toppings is added, and finally a layer of mozzarella cheese.

Traditionally, like St. Louis-style pizza, this pizza is cut into squares, also known as party cut, as opposed to a pie cut into wedges. However, the consistency of the crust and the quantity and choice of the tomato sauce and cheese are what separate this style from East Coast-, Roman- and St. Louis-style pizzas, and it makes the pizza from neighborhood pizzerias immediately distinguishable from that offered by national chains such as Papa John's or Pizza Hut.

There are hundreds of ma and pa shops in Chicago that make awesome thin crust. And I cant find one in Tampa :(

Night Wolf

Square pizza is called Sicilian style.... atleast to me. Though I don't think its the same as what you said as it is usually a bit thicker.

I was able to find a really good pizza place in Clearwater... man was it awesome, they actually sold pizza by the slice. In fact, the two owners are from upstate NY, the same small town my step-father went to college in. It's called Mario's Pizzeria, I forgot the name of the plaza... I think the Clearwater mall? (not the actual mall) on the corner of 60 and 19, in the plaza with Petsmart. I think they have since opened another place up in St. Pete, but man it was real good! I would get 2 plain slices, or 1 meat lovers slice and it would fill me up, it wasn't very expensive and it was a very good price.

Also, in 2nd place would be NYPD Pizza at Channelside... I was only there twice, I went when they first opened. It was good too, but I preferred Mario's.

Here, there is only 1 good pizza shop... it's not exactly like I am used to, but compared to what else is here, it's pretty good. The owner is from CT. It' s a nice little greek place too.

Man, I'm tellin ya, we better stop talking about pizza now... cause last time we got into the pizza topic, it was enough to make me fly up to NY for the weekend just to get some pizza from my favorite local shop back in my hometown..... and meet up with a couple friends and shoot pool :)

Brett
02-14-08, 02:36 PM

Actually now that I think about it, Chicago pizza (or any pizza in the US) can't even hold a candle to pizza in Europe. Pizza in Poland is unbelievable. It's portioned so perfectly that people order entire pizzas to themselves. It's very thin, always fire cooked, not greasy at all, the dough has excellent herbs and spices cooked into it, damn I can't wait to go back there in the summer!

Also Gary, I love this shot of Jay

OMG GARY, WHAT KIND of Camera is that?! I must have whatever that is. Those are some of the best photos I've ever seen.

Also, I like the Giordano's here in Tampa on Dale Mabry, but I eat the thin crust not the classic Chicago style. It's ok, but not anything special.

The Navigator didn't like the cold, so it's coming home.

Looks like you guys had a blast! Sorry I couldnt make it. The Miami meet was small but a lot of fun! I will put up my pics when I get back to Des Moines. I am in the Ft Myers Airport right now. Pretty shitty weather in DSM and ATL so I might be lucky to make it home.

We even saw the new Audi R8 in Miami beach while waiting for Sal! That thing is SICK!

That is GORGEOUS.

Of the lenses, which would you say is the most versatile if someone like myself wanted to stick with just one or two for general purpose shooting? What absolutely amazes me about those pictures is the lighting and the depth-of-field. The way close objects are sharp and the background remains perfectly out of focus.

Do you have to spend time tweaking and setting up these shots, or are you just taking the shot as normal?

Out of my lenses, the 17-85 is the most versatile as it has a great focal range, and has Image Stabilization. The downside is it doesn't have the best optics, the f/4 aperture makes shooting indoors somewhat tricky, and the build quality isn't the greatest. But for general purpose shooting, I'd recommend this lens.

My 50mm 1.4 is an absolute steal for the money. The large aperture allows me to shoot in any kind of lighting, and allows for getting creative with depth-of-field. It's kind of soft from f/1.4-f/1.8, but really sharpens up around f/2. I shot almost all of the photos from the meet with this lens.

The 18-55 was my kit lens, and I haven't touched it since July.

My favorite lens is my 70-200. Since it's an L series (Canon's version of say, AMG), the optics are spectacular and build quality is top-notch. These are the kinds of lenses you see on the sidelines at NFL and MLB games, and the first choice of professionals. Although it doesn't have a wide-end, this lens stays on my camera most of the time. It's so nice I barely have to do any post-processing to the photos I take with it.

As for those shots, I planned most of them out beforehand in my head. I pictured what kind of shot I wanted and went with it. I shot almost all of them using manual exposure, deciding what aperture, ISO, and shutter speed to use to get the shot I wanted.

Im really impressed man, I don't know much about photography, but you are gifted at it. What fascinates me about those photos is they look every bit as good as anything I'd see on Edmunds.com, or even in a print copy of Road and Track or Car and Driver. Even something as mundane as that Murano pic with the boot on it, the photo sort of "tells a story" all on its own... it doesn't look "flat". Not sure how to explain what I mean.

Thanks for all the compliments. Hoover's been like that from Day 1. When I adopted him, I had finished all the paperwork, put the leash on him and asked if he wanted to go for a ride. He reacted just as you see on the video, lunged for the door and leaped into the back seat when I opened the car door.

As you can see, he's a goofball, but he's an incredibly sweet and wonderful dog who I absolutely adore. There's nothing I wouldn't do for him. I consider myself very lucky to have such a great dog and friend.
