View Full Version : automatic cadillac fuel door still_walkin 02-11-08, 02:17 PM I have a 1986 cadillac deville sedan 4.1L and I adding a solienod so I can have a automatic fuel door. I know around the 90s or so this was added . I was thinking on running it on a 10amp fuse rating and having it on a fuse that requires the car on not accessorie mode . I was also going to mount the soliend in the trunk and drill a hole through it runs to the gas docking area. What do you all think submariner409 02-11-08, 03:00 PM Shouldn't be a problem if you tap into a fuse that's hot with the ignition OFF. 10 amp is plenty. You could piggyback it off your 5th wheel power. Put the solenoid in the trunk with a cable to a spring-loaded trip latch at the gas door, and figure a way to add one of those flat finger springs to pop the door open. The only bugaboo would be a piece on the fuel door for the latch to "latch on to".
You might be able to find 12V solenoid kits at a big parts house. We used to use them for hoods, trunks, doors. All sorts of wild stuff. One of my friends had a rig where the trunk would open 6" and a bloody arm would dangle out. Was wild in rush-hour traffic. still_walkin 02-11-08, 03:07 PM Yeah that's crazy I have a kit and the hard part that is that like you said the end of the solenid to the latch . Will the angle of the wire make a difference of will it open or not . I know the solenoid has to be at a angle so it will drop down so it can be used again submariner409 02-11-08, 09:58 PM A latch trip solenoid will have an internal spring that pulls the slug back and resets the whole works. Click, click.......just like your door unlock.....clunk, clunk........ brougham 03-04-08, 10:11 PM Just get all the parts from a junk yard. 1988s had it and its probably the same as what the newer ones have too so it should be easy to find all the parts for it. still_walkin 03-04-08, 11:12 PM Shouldn't be a problem if you tap into a fuse that's hot with the ignition OFF. 10 amp is plenty. Why did u specify that I use a cuircit that work when the car is off. Any special reason I was going to use why the car is on but if u stated that you must have a reason. Hey all. Sorry for butting in...You want to tap into a live wire, so when you pull up to the station to get gas and the car is off, you can still pop the fuel door. Also, I have seen fuel door poppers on your year of Cad in the wrecking yard, there is an '86 with it there right now, so maybe you could see how they wire it in if you have one in a wrecking yard near you. Also wanted to let you know (went to wrecking yard today) that the factory fuel door release, it also has a manual release in the truck on the left had side, not far from the tail light area. Just for your information... submariner409 03-06-08, 06:16 PM still walkin......montsb is correct....that's my reason for using a "hot at all times" fuse. My '02 has a cable release in the trunk, also. Not difficult to rig. If you can find the cable at a junkyard, it has a cutesy yellow "Emergency Fuel Door Release" tab attached. Be careful if you use a used solenoid, as some here are recommending parts from a junkyard. My father has a show truck and had a one of a kind hood that was custom fabricated with a solenoid (used) to open an air intake. Solenoid caught fire... hood caught fire... good thing it wasn't near the gas tank... hmmmm still_walkin 03-11-08, 08:40 PM Be careful if you use a used solenoid, as some here are recommending parts from a junkyard. thanks where did he mount the solienod. I was thinking of putting mine in the trunk ans drilling a hole through the trunk. But better ssfe than sorry still_walkin 03-11-08, 09:04 PM Also wanted to let you know (went to wrecking yard today) that the factory fuel door release, it also has a manual release in the truck on the left had side, not far from the tail light area. So u took it out the car. Ifyou have it how much you want for it still_walkin 04-08-08, 06:07 PM Guess what while I was fixing the light in my glove box I discovered that my car comes with a factory gas door opener. The wires for the switch was there but no switch and the factory location for the switch has been taken out oand covered. I tried to complete the curcit and got a spark. I secondly used the wire that goes to the solienod and grounded and got a spark as well. Acording to the service manual the soilenod is in the trunk. But I looked thre couldn't find it also the manual said there was a blue wire that the solienod was going to but I seen a black wire so I don't kno. What do you all think |
