View Full Version : Does the Bose HU or the Bose amp control volume in an 00 SLS??

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a 2000 SLS with the bose stereo. Good Sound but needs some more bottom end. I just happen to have a JL Audio 12w3v2 in a small sealed enclosure, with a soundstream amp laying around, so I figured that would be the perfect addition to round out the system.

I have taken a look a the factory wiring diagram for the Bose system. The head unit outputs simply left and right audio outputs into the amp. The rest is handled by the amp, before I tear it all apart and get out the oscilloscope and try to figure it out myself I figured I'd see if anyone knew.

1) Does the Bose headunit send a line level or speaker level audio out to the amp. That is where I plan to grab the signal to feed into my amp. Probably using a line output converter to be able to tweak the signal. My amp has it's own internal active crossover to tune the signal.

2) Does the bose headunit control volume or does the amp do it via serial data? That is, does the voltage level p-p change on the line output, and the bose amp just responds that way, or is the preamp in the Bose amp, and volume is controlled by the head unit telling the amp to raise the volume via the data bus?

Has anyone added a sub to an 00 bose system and happen to know the answer to that question?

Take care and thanks in advance!

George

AMP controls it
HU is much like a gain knob

Ok now you said something interesting to me....

You said the HU volume is like a gain knob. Does it send the intended volume to the amp via serial data, or does it vary the p-p voltage of the line output?? Basically what I want to know is if i can hook a line out converter to the amp audio line outs, instead of picking up an amplified line from one of the speakers?

Also where is the bose amp in an 00 SLS. Please forgive my ignorance on that question but i've only had the car a week....

Take care,

George

Ok that works...

Two last questions for you.

1) Did you leave the factory 12" sub connected
2) What are you using as a remote turn on trigger for the aftermarket amp?

Take care and thanks again,

George
