Hello all. I am the proud new owner of an 89 fleetwood d'elegance with only 54k miles. Let me describe the problem I am having. The seat switch mounted on the drivers door will only move the seat backwards and forwards. the up,down, and tilt funtions dont work. When I toggle the swith for any of these functions, the TRUNK light illuminates on the dash and the seat will not move. Do I need to replace the switch? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably a good idea to clean all the electrical connections/contacts at the switch and on the seat motor. Even doing that, it may require removing the seat motor/transmission assembly and cleaning/relubing the internal components. Moisture can build up and cause some of the gears and shafts to stick inside the transmission unit. If that is something you're not comfy with, try "lightly" banging on the seat trans with a small hammer while moving the switch. That may free it up, but it is still best to remove and clean etc.

You'll also have to watch those motor housings. When you remove the track from the floor of the car, the motor will be dangling freely between the two tracks. The brittle plastic becomes extremely weak over the years and easily break when seats are removed. This in itself may be the cause for the problem; a casing may have broke and now the proper gears are not being turned. Go under there and glue/tape it up if necessary and certainly clean all electrical connections. That trunk thing sounds like a short somewhere in the system.
Good luck!
