: Tales from an exhaust shop mech

ok as some of you know i am a mech at an exhaust shop and have custom built the systems on both my ETC and STS

so i thought id make a thread showing some of the custom jobs we've done on cars and how they were done

yesterday a Lincoln Contenential Mark came in with a busted Y pipe. The guy was happy as hell because this jusified him running a true dual system

we eliminated both cats, hacked down the y pipe and removed the single tail

from there we added an H pipe into 2 exlerator mufflers (the same on my STS only his were 2 1/4 mine were 2.5)

let the fun begin

he seen my video of my 97 ETC and wanted his 95 ETC to sound the same
we were happy (and by we i mean once again me) to build my custom system for him

Hi I am from the E.P.A. and I am investigating shops that I have heard are removing emission devices (IE Cats) are you familiar with the severe penelties and fines such actions force us to impose??

On a serious note the pic is a little dark but it looks like nice work.

can anybody guess what this is
http://i25.tinypic.com/300z22s.jpg

how about a guess as to what im doing to it
http://i30.tinypic.com/35jk03q.jpg

heres a pic of my STS when i had to put it back up and add another hanger as the 3 inch pipe was pretty big and on a bumpy road the exhaust would hit off of the channel, doesnt happen any more though

does not apply to cars older than 81 (i believe thats the cut off year) i could be wrong
and if you think that Lincoln would EVER pass emissions your sadly mistaken hahahaha

Yeah, not a performance leader by any means, but man, what a pimp mobile!

Now you know why those Mark Lincolns (III, IV, V, VI) are some of my favorite cars of all time.

i rather prefer my 74 drop top over it
504 of brute torque ahhaha

we have done TONS more jobs wish i still had those pics
we did a Charger SXT with a 3.5 (i think thats the size or is it a 3.8?) HO
ran true duals, it was almost as good as my STS

Yeah, the Eldos always had the bigger motors, but the Ford 460 is no slouch either, but after '78, they lost that, and they just weren't as powerful.

You're right, it's the 3.5L HO V6. Chrysler hasn't used a 3.8L, in their cars, since the early '90s.

Yeah I really like the '72 Mark IV. The hood is longer than an 80's Brougham! Plus they're not as tall which makes them look even longer and sleeker and faster.

sts03, how hard is it to drop the cradle out if you use a lift?

The reason i ask is becuase i may be helping on a N* HG change.

CadillacSTS42005

the lift i have it on takes it up from the body on the sides
i put the car up on the lift and supported the cradle using jack stands
then removed the 6 fame bolts (as well as the steering linkage, brake lines, fuel lines, harnesses etc...) and lifted the body up over the cradle

We have both styles of lift in our shop where it will attach to the frame and where the wheels go on it.

Would love to find a good exhaust mech to do mine.... I need new muffs anyway, hoping to go for mandrel bent 2.5" to go with my 2.5" cats in the garage.... And maybe even go with headers if I can scare up the $$. But at the min, a good dual system for my 94 Fleetwood.... I hope to get the 2.5" tailpipes and Walker Dynomax 17749 Mufflers here next month, and then go with the rest when I find a good shop to put it on.... and replace the nasty squished 2-2.25" duals I have now.... The pipe is good, just don't like a couple of the bends up by the trans.... And I want a good x-pipe too...

careful with heads on an LT1
they are notorious for rusting up and snapping off in the block
ive had it happen

Dynomax are a good choice but to be honest if you wanna save some money look into the xlererators
they were actually sued by Flowmaster due to how much they look and flow like them

Yup, they are famous for it. Apparently the bean counters thought a bolt was a bolt, and tossed in some Grade 5 or worse bolts into the parts bin where Grade 8 should have been.

And GM was plauged with bolts breaking off and manifold to heads leaking.... I have 2 broken now.... One just recently, the other been like that a while. It leaks when cold, but once warmed up it seals back up....

Due to the breakage, that is why I am not doing it until I have a spare set of heads or find a way to pull the broken bolts out.... I don't wanna mess with downtime....

So my plan was to get some heads, do them up good (porting and fun....) and just R&R and put on headers then....

I understand and agree that the manifold bolts have a tendancy to break in the heads,, I was wondering what was snapping off in the block??

just the bolts, and they can be a bugger to get out....
