I have aquired a mid 90's northstar engine and have no idea what it came out of... How do I know if it is an L37 (Vin 9) or LD8 (Vin y) engine? Are there any ID or casting #'s on the motor that will tell me what it is. I understand the intake cams are different between the two motors does anyone know the cam specs on these cams as I could measure the cam and ID it that way.

Thanks for any help,
Dave D.

There is a VIN derivative on the block which can be used to ID it, here is the exact wording on its location from my FSM

Vehicle identification number derivative located on the plate on engine in front of transaxle extension visible with vehicle on hoist.

Basically if you are standing behind the engine as if it were in the car it is on the lower right hand side.

Yeah that.......there's also a VIN derivative on the right front cam cover of some engines.

Go back in the N* Performance threads and look at AJ's post on N* cams. All the years and numbers are there.
