View Full Version : Exhaust opinion. Sergey21 01-28-08, 03:49 AM In about a month, I will have magnaflow CAT and straight pipe from there to the back, but I want to get it to come out of the side, before the rear tire. You guys think that will sound and look ok? Ill post a sound clip of the sound. :yup: submariner409 01-28-08, 10:35 AM Don't forget that different lengths of pipe tune the exhaust note exactly as a wind instrument changes pitch with slides and tube lengths, which is why racing exhausts are designed with many hours of efficiency tuning.
Looks-wise, why not? Doesn't sound like it's a daily driver with no muffler(s) unless you don't care about just plain ol' noise. (and it will be noisy, especially for the passengers.) CadillacSTS2003 01-28-08, 01:08 PM I want to get it to come out of the side, before the rear tire.
illegal
will not pass emissions or inspection standards... Sergey21 01-28-08, 08:18 PM Back here, it will pass, as long as it has CATS. Dadillac 01-28-08, 09:36 PM I know in NJ, and i would imagine every other state, the exhaust MUST be rearward of all opening windows. So if that holds true in Cali, then it would be illegal. Check before you spend the $.
Don CadillacSTS2003 01-28-08, 10:07 PM theres no way that will pass CALIFORNIA (were i assume you are from based on the CA) inspection and emissions
they are some of if not the most stringent
i am an inspector... Sergey21 01-28-08, 10:45 PM Well, I'm not sure as Side Exhaust legal or not, but all you have to have is cats to pass emissions test. Plus, when you got friends working at a smog place, things are much better! :lildevil: theres no way that will pass CALIFORNIA (were i assume you are from based on the CA) inspection and emissions

It will pass in Texas for sure. What is the problem with it being out the side? I have a 94 Dodge Ram that pokes out the side and it passes here fine. Hell, it didnt even HAVE a tailpipe past the muffler once and it still passed. CadillacSTS2003 01-28-08, 11:39 PM its dangerous
same reason why exhaust tips can only stick out so far
and why no sharp edges are allowed on a car
or any holes
safety hazards It would also look retarded, IMHO. I don't want to break-in and sound bias, but the back end will be empty and look crazy. I think it's a waste and that you'll likely change your mind when you don't have the money to change it back, or when your transmission goes out and the budget goes to that. Been there, done that (not the side pipes). its dangerous

Is that for any pipe sticking out the side of the car, or just before the rear tire? Alot of trucks come with the pipe sticking out the side standard, the 94 Dodge Ram and the 97 F150 come to mind. CadillacSTS2003 01-29-08, 12:41 AM theres a certain length which varies by state
in PA or at least in my shop if it goes out beyond the bumper you fail
trucks can go out of the side BEHIND the rear tires on trucks were the bumper wraps around and provided still they do not project beyond the bumper
trucks can dump the exhaust out of a tail pipe AFTER the cab and before the rear tire so long as it does not project beyond the body (this is not legal on cars as the cab of a truck has ended at the beginning of the bed while in a car the cab runs the length of the body and if the exhaust dumped out under the body the toxic fumes could enter the interior)
think of this
if i walk bye and catch my leg on your bumper ok im an idiot and may get a bruise but thats it
if i walk bye and theres a sharp piece of metal such as a tail pipe or a seared piece of metal hanging out and i gash my leg open the owner of the car is liable for my injuries as there car is illegal...
some shops wont care and will pass your car, however if its pretty obvious the damage was there or the pipe was modified prior to inspection and it passed recent inspection and still has the illegal entity on the car, then the shop will face HEAVY fines up to losing their state inspection license (a primary source of income for any shop)
its just not worth it for them to risk it because you want it like that theres a certain length which varies by state

Ah, ok. Yeah, they told me that it was fine since it was beyond the cab here. I have checked the inspection protocol out in Texas before and the only thing it was to have for emmissions is to pass the OBD II test, or a smog test.
For the safety part, it's wipers, lights, seatbelts, horn, and brakes. No pipe restrictions. kdsevillle 01-29-08, 11:40 PM I was thinking about getting side pipes just like you're wanting to get, but I'm still not sure. It's just one of those things where it'll look real ugly or freaking mean!!! If you get it post pics please!!!!! Thank you :) CadillacSTS2003 01-29-08, 11:46 PM would never work on an 98+
would bottom out and look like crap
theres no way to dump it out the sides through the tunnel... Sergey21 01-30-08, 02:52 AM I was thinking about getting side pipes just like you're wanting to get, but I'm still not sure.
