One of those questions you hate to ask, what direction is the coolant flow in a N*,is the flow from the bottom of the block to the top,or from the top to the bottom?. Thanks

Thanks I should have added that I'm asking becuase I have read advice that sealant tabs should be placed in bottom rad hose, and then have read they can go in the upper rad hose?. thanks kenneth2k5 01-27-08, 02:03 AM Not sure on the answer to your question, but I put mine in the upper radiator hose. It was messy enough, I couldn't imagine trying to put it in the lower radiator hose. dkozloski 01-27-08, 02:07 AM It makes no difference where you put the tabs as long as it isn't in the expansion tank. If you drop them in the tank they'll just lay there and never get to the rest of the system. ewill3rd 01-27-08, 09:09 AM The coolant comes out of the engine, into the upper hose, then down through the rediator, up through the lower hose and past the t-stat into the water pump housing. Shouldn't matter where the pellets go, but I'd probably put them in the top hose if you are going to use them. Otherwise they might plug up the t-stat somehow, don't ask me how... just speculation. creeker 01-27-08, 05:44 PM The coolant comes out of the engine, into the upper hose, then down through the rediator, up through the lower hose and past the t-stat into the water pump housing. Thanks for the info.,it sounds like your saying that putting them in is an option. Ranger 01-27-08, 06:13 PM According to GM, it is now. ewill3rd 01-28-08, 09:21 AM I know on the 4100, the 4.5 and the 4.9 it was practically mandatory. I seem to recall reading somewhere they are not recommended for N*. You CAN use them, but it isn't as critical as it was on the older engines. We used to call them "Cadillac Pills". chubbyranger 01-29-08, 07:22 AM Not sure on the answer to your question, but I put mine in the upper radiator hose. Its actually not that hard to get the lower hose off IF you take the air intake bellows and the air filter cover off first, like you are changing the air filter. I go by the sticker on the radiator cowl in my 99 that recommends they be used. And to keep them from clogging anything up I put them in a plastic bag and hit 'em with a hammer, then pour the dust in. Learned that one from Sub  codewize 01-29-08, 09:44 AM The manual says in the bottom I put mine in the top. The bottom hose is a bear to get off. As stated, as long as they don't go in the expansion tank, you're fine. They were part of the factory fill but have since become optional. Put them in. It's $5 worth of insurance. If they do nothing you wasted $5 ewill3rd 01-29-08, 04:44 PM I smash them in a plastic bag also, powder them up first. middieblueSTS 01-30-08, 02:45 PM I have a coolant leak in my 2000 sts. Common problem? Any advice? how much should I be charged to have this one fixed? submariner409 01-30-08, 05:07 PM It all depends on where the leak is. Some are flat easy, some are an unholy bitch. middieblueSTS 01-31-08, 01:02 PM Lol! z06bigbird 01-31-08, 04:35 PM You can identify the flow of the coolant by feeling the upper hose. The end closest to the thermostat will become warm before the end near the radiator. Other hint is the the pellet in the thermostat faces the engine not the radiator hose. That pellet is what opens the thermostat. 99 eldog 02-01-08, 02:59 PM Hey tech I need help finding a good machanic i can trust in my area Det MI ewill3rd 02-01-08, 09:37 PM I can ask on the GM Technician forum if you want. I can't promise anything, I think there are some techs up there, not sure about Cad techs... not many of us on that forum really, but I'll try. | |
