The factory chrome rims on my 06 are corroded after only 18,000 miles in Chicago. I wash the car often but the wheels are blistering. Is it just me ?
Does the warranty cover this ?

I would certainly think that replacement of the wheels would be covered by warranty. Granted Chicago Winters are tough ...........but then so are Detroit Winters. I'd definitely take it to your dealer for replacement under warranty and if they don't give you satisfaction take it up the chain of command.

Chrome doesnt generally corrode. If anything it will peel or flake, chip off.
I remember when I had my 93 the chrome began peeling off the rims. And that was after 10 years.
But it did not corrode.

Just looked at your post again and noticed you also said blistering.
If thats the case and the chrome is coming off....then yes its possible. Could have been a bad chrome job.
I'd worked in chrome for many years and it does happen.

Like I said....10 years with my 93 in Ontario before the chrome started to peel. And we have pretty harsh winters as well.
But peeling on an 06 doesnt sound right.

Make sure you dry completely.

I get corrosion on the INSIDE lip of my chrome stockers that can cause slow air leaks around the bead. I usually wash twice a week but obviously need to use the leaf blower better getting the water out of the lip.

My chrome wheels are oxidated and nobody can get it off. Every wheel.

My bosses 07 Escalade ESV's chrome wheels are pitting and corroding on the chrome. about 20k miles on the truck, id say more then half were on the 22's he had on it. He is trading it in so he really doesnt care, but still... Thats not good. I would be pissed. His is a ESV in the maroon-ish color... IDk the official name. He is getting a EXT in the same color. Aparently he is one of the few who like that color.

This will happen to chrome wheels with all the salt and chemicals out on the road, if you use your chrome wheels in the winter keep them clean and "waxed", this will help them last longer, factory chrome is only so good to start with.

With the years of the vehicles talked about here......I dunno ??
Chrome is pretty durable stuff.
A few things here Im thinking about:

grappa. You say you've been washing regularly. Then there is no reason why the chrome should be blistering after only 18000. No matter what is being put down on the roads for winter etc. Unless the city is using some kind of highly costic chemical or you have been parking in a chemical waste dump.
And as orconn said, warranty should cover it. Call them as soon as possible and dont waste any time getting others opinions. Dont wait. For anything that anyone feels may still be under warranty, call warranty first !!!!! Dont wait for others opinions. If you still have warranty, at least make a call to assure that it is recorded so as to not miss by even a day.

Corrosion on inside lips of rims is generally not the chrome. Majority of rims are aluminum and the chrome coating does not pertrude to where the bead of the tire sits. Or it should not anyways. Rim leaks are very common with aluminum rims. The aluminum does break, especially in climates that experience at least 3 out of the 4 seasons. Aluminum is porous as well as the rubber of the tire, and it is not a good idea to have the rubber contacting a smooth chromed surface. To receive a proper seal that why is a loosing battle.

Im also wondering as well if some believe they have aluminum chromed rims, when they are actually polished aluminum rims ?
If i just polished aluminum then they need to be cleaned more than just regularly if in a winter/chemical environment.
It doesnt take much for aluminum to begin to pit and corrode if not taken care of properly.

Chrome on the other hand though should last much much longer with only general care.

Chrome rims....If done properly...should not exhibit whats being said here.....

Whom doesnt know some one that hasnt had ?????say a 1970 Skylark under a tarp for 15 years and the chrome rims only took a smidgen of elbow grease to clean up ????? ............

Factory chrome is different, many times it's single plated, where many aftermarket wheels are triple plated, I see a ton of factory wheels that the chrome is pitted or flaking after 1-2 years if exposed to winter conditions, keeping your wheels clean and "waxed" will help keep them looking good for a long time, just not always true with factory plating
