I live in Fairbanks, Alaska -66F is the record low. It's been about -20F at night for the last couple of weeks which is average for this time of year. The average January temp is -22F. So far we've only had one or two -40F nights.

Until Koz gets here...(oops, too late)

We had one chilly morning this week. It was +3 on the house's outside thermometer and on the car thermometer at 6:30. I decided to drive through the icebox which is my name for a spot about 3 miles away that is usually the coldest spot in the area. Sure enough, it was -6.

The coldest I have personally seen is around -75F near Snag, Yukon Territory in Canada. It was so cold you had to keep turning the steering wheel, weaving on the road, and working the steering linkage on the truck to keep it from freezing in one position. If you stopped the truck for more than a few minutes you weren't going to get it moving again until the weather warmed up. All we had for arctic lube in those days was to dump diesel in the gear oil. We used Standard Oil Aviation #1 grease on wheel bearings.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!?!??!?!? You are talking about Ulster county, right?

I grew up in Highland! Clintondale actually, but what a small town, same thing.... New Paltz too.

I went to Highland High School.....man, this is the first I've seen someone online mention that.

How long has he been there? IMO the best pizza is Rio's in New Paltz, but the same owners now have Pizza Mia open in the Bridgeview plaza.... and the best Italian food around there is Casa Mia, their son opened Rio's, then Pizza Mia..... Coco's across the river (Italian) is also on top of my list too. Living in Florida and Georgia, I'm deprived of good, real Italian food and pizza... its horrible, people here actually think Pizza Hut is "really good" I can do Papa Johns, but a frozen pizza when done right is better.... and forget Italian! Man, atleast when my mom visits or I visit them I get real Italian food. Mexican food and BBQ is really good down here though.

wow, just reading that brought back a whole lotta memories.....heh

It's been in the high 20's some nights, usually 30's at night and 40's-50's in the day here in Middle Georgia.... its different then the NY temp tho, cause I don't remember NY getting this frigid cold, I think cause there is more humidity here, cause it gets cold. We get frost on the windshield of the car but thats it.

Hi Night Wolf, glad to hear from you. He's been up there for about 2 years now. Bought a nice house on 3 acres about 3 miles off 299 down by the big tow guys place, Chodikee Lake Road. I live in NJ he moved up there cause he works for Saturn in Poughkeepsie and the commute was rough. I am up there all the time and love the area, a little cold this time of year but it's so much more laid back than NJ. I got off the Thruway it was 9 when I turned on Chodikee the temp started dropping like clock work on that 3 mile stretch of road it went from 9 to -1 I never saw anything like it.

Even on the Eastern Shore of MD it gets to -5 once in a blue moon. Colder in the MD mountains. Did an ice fishing trip to Baudette, MN in January a few years ago, and when it gets UP to -10 those loonies run around in sweatshirts and Levis. They were unhappy because there was only 49" of ice on Lake of The Woods. Maybe I'll move back to Charleston.

Years ago, 1971 to be exact, I lived in Southern Saskatchewan. I was a pipeline gauger which meant I had to go up to the top of crude oil tanks at oil wells to take samples . One day, with the wind chill it was -85F! It was about -25 to -30F with about a 30 or 40 mile per hour wind. Normally when it is cold, there is no wind, not that day. I don't live there anymore either. Another day we had freezing rain and the roads were so slippery, I could spin the rear wheels in my company Ford 1/2 ton when I was in high gear and it only had a small six.

In extreme cold weather the biggest problem is serpentine belts. A new belt won't make one trip around the pulleys without breaking. Spares should be bought in advance of requirements and run for a few hundred miles in warmer weather and then removed for later use. Intersections are littered with broken belts. Lubricants are pretty well formulated for cold weather. This winter has been so warm so far that the auto parts sales are way down.

This winter has been relatively tame... we've only had a couple days where it struggled to reach the freezing mark... the lowest night-time temps we've seen this year have been in the mid-upper teens... but again, that was only for one small stretch.

The coldest I've ever personally seen on a thermometer was -8 and that was at around 2am one February. Winters are fairly predictable in these parts. Fall is much more of a rollercoaster, this area is ideal for radiational cooling.. we've had swings upwards of 55 degrees day to night.

Anyway... we're actually expecting our second snowfall of the season tonight... although it's only going to be a paltry 1-3".... that little of an amount isn't even worth it - I call it nothing more than "inconvenience snow."

-41F is really cold but with no wind it is bearable. I did a ski week one time in early Dec and it was -40 ish the whole week and not much snow either. It was a test of endurance. I paid my money so I wanted my money's worth! The good thing about really cold weather is you don't usually get the wind. Cold weather and wind makes it really miserable. I've just booked a trip to Houston to visit my daughter in Feb. I'll be really tired of the coldish weather -1F we are having now.
