Hi,
I have a '99 Catera. Just yesterday the TC and ABS dash lights came on, briefly. Then today, they came on again, and stayed on. Also the steering seems a little stiff.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong?
Thanks,
John

Hi Frank,
Yes, the brake lights are working, but the ABS and TC lights are intermittent.
What is the ebtcm??

Hi Frank,
Yes, the brake lights are working, but the ABS and TC lights are intermittent.
What is the ebtcm??

it is the electronic brake traction contol module (anti lock brake controller) it is on the LF frame rail under and to the front of the brake booster, bunch of brake lines and a wire harnesss are in the vicinity. The PS is hard because the variable assist PS gets its input from this module, its designed to give more assist at low vehicle speed such as parking, at road speed you need very little steering assist. The ebtcm recieves input from each of the wheel speed sensors to contol the anti lock benefit and the traction control system, and it also provides input for the variable assist steering.
What the answer to the problem is, ??? some people have had results with replacing the mod...my suggestion is have someone pull the abs codes, a few dollars in a good diagnosis may be better then throwing parts at it?? just my .02...a good tech with the gm tech 2 can get some very good info.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the primer. Doesn't sound like a job for someone who can do only rudimentary repairs? I'm sure my mechanic can do this. Approximately how much should this cost to repair? How urgent is it?
Thanks,
John

modulemasters.com can rebuild the module for you, there is a current thread (just below this one) going right now on this very repair. It sounds like the answer to your problem. The prices for the rebuild is very reasonable, get your mech to R&R the module and you can send it off ....

Gentlemen,
My mechanic says that the EBTCM needs to be replaced, ~$4000. If Modulemasters can repair it, what's the proceedure? Can I take it out, and still drive the car?

wow!! $4k!!! I pulled mine out and replaced it with one from a JY...took about an about an hour from start to finish. IIRC you can drive the car with the EBTCM removed.

Hi JR,
What's a JY?
What year Catera do you have?
You can run the car without this module?? This isn't what I've been told.
