View Full Version : What's so great about the perforated seats?

I brought home two catalogs last night. Seville and DeVille.. I noticed the leather seats in the Seville catalog are perforated and tight. Does the SLS have these same seats? Or do they get the more plush-looking rippled leather? I also noticed on the doors, the same treatment goes.. I'd rather have the softer-looking, more plush seats.

Is this something I could probably trade with somebody for? I mean.. Are the perforated seats something special? They just seem harder to clean and keep clean to me...

The perforated seats are supposed to provide better breathablity. Supposedly, they should help your legs not get stuck to the seat during the summer. I dont know how well they work, but thats the theory. As for the doors, same thing i guess, but it would look kind of stupid to have perforated seats and not have the same door leather.

Anyway, the SLS gets the regular seats (as far as i know).

You're right.. I do like the looks of the regular seats better though.. I suppose I'll have to trade somebody when I get them..

Also, i think the perforated seats are harder, and therefore not as comfortable. I still dont think there is a more comfortable car in the world than my fleetwood. With those seats, you just sink right in, flip on the heaters and lumbar, and its nappy time. You will never hear the engine unless you really punch it, then you get the beautiful song of that V8 lt1

The LT1 is a seriously modify-able engine! What's better than luxury, comfort and performance?

So.. Does anyone else have any input on these seats? ARE the perforated seats really harder than the non-perforated? I want soft seats, damnit! :) I think I'll have to trade my leather seats and the leather on the side doors...

Elsesso--What do you mean "harder?" I think the perforated leather seats are just as comfortable as the non perforated ones. They tend to give the car a more sporty look and the door inserts are perforated just to match the seat. The door inserts in the SLS have an embossed pattern that is supposed to give them more of a "luxurious" look.

I like the luxurious look but I want the faster car. So, that's why I'll be going for the STS. But, I want a plush interior.. So, I'll end up trading somebody... Let's hear more about this comparison - perforated and non-perforated...

I guess its like comparing apples and oranges. I was comparing them to the seats in my fleetwood, and there is no comparision in my book. The perforated seats are comfortable, more comfortable than most, but personally i like the origional style. They seem to offer better support. I have perforated seats in my GTP, and they are pretty hard. When i get out of the seats, i like to be able to see my "groove". That is just my opinion. I also think that the regular style gives fairly good breathability, because of the seams. They also seem a little more plush.

The perforated seats are nice, but personally I like the other ones better.

haha you're comparing gtp seats to cadillac that's like comparing a plum to a watermelon (forget the apples and oranges). GTP was meant to be more sporty so they put in a better supporting seats instead of more comfortable seats. As for the perforated seats, i thought it was just as comfortable as the plush leather seats. I also appreciate the perforated seats more during the summer time

I sell automotive leather interiors for a living. I just took a look at the Cadillac web site. The front seats seem to have the same dimensions on both. Which means they are likely supplied by the same supplier, so there should be no difference in comfort.

The Deville looks tight on the website, is this not true? If it has the 'gathered' look, then this can actually look dirtier in the long run because they tend to flatten into creases and show wear.

Gathers and perforations play no part in the comfort of the seat. Gathers just make people think plush and perforations make them think sport. It's the firmness of the seat foam that creates a firm or soft seat.

Hope that helps.

I realize i was basically comparing a 2x4 with a pillow. I am still a fan of the "old school" type. This may not be a proven fact, but the looser looking type seem to be less succeptable to tearing (because they have more room to expand, it kinda makes sense).
Personally, i dont think that the perforated seats make THAT big a difference. I mean they help some, but your legs are still gonna stick to the seat after a long trip.

Although, put me in a caddy with either type and i wont complain!

How much do you weigh that you require your seat cover to expand so that it won't rip? I'd worry more about the seat rails and the floor being reinforced! :halo:

I'm just playing with ya. :D

I wish I had more suportive seats in my car right now I have the built in reminder for when i don't put my seat belt on - with leather bench seat I end up on the other side of the car when i make a left turn. I hope to find something beter soon

Gathers! Wow. I didn't realize there was a name for that type of seat. I like the gather leather covers better...

hey hot rod, just so you know, i am really skinny. I cant expand the seat cover enough to make it crease anyway. I was just saying that with some "other" people that may be a factor. Ive seen a lot of cars with tighter fitting covers and they seem to rip at the seams

I ain't Fat! And I ain't skinny. I'm just a large person. I was never able to quite get comfy in my 'Vette or my Van but My Caddy's just right! I have Diamond button pleated seats in my Seville and they're very nice. I very much like the gathered look and feel, Not a big fan of the perforated seats. I'ts probably lame but to my way of thinking it's like buying seats with holes in them and it seems like as they age they would have more of a tendancy to rip!

elwesso

That was basically what i was saying in the 1st place!!! I dont think it is so much of the holes in them already but moreso the fact that it is so tight

Well You know? I just like softer seats! That's one of the MANY reasons I drive a Cadillac! After all.... I have a sensitive hiney....Fragile flower that I am! LOL!

hehehehehe. I actually laughed out loud with that last statement.. hehe.. Well, the lovely perforated seats on my Vette are old, stale and ripped.. Damn hard leather seat covers.. :p One day I got in with my knee first.. heh...

Oh yeah, I can see it now! how big a hole appeared where your knee was?

On the topic of seats I'd like to find some black leather buckets that are very suportive, with or without heat, prefer power, and have the Caddy sheild and wreath on them. What models should I be looking in?

Just so Elwesso doesn't look like an insane maniac - I split this topic into another thread and put it into the General Discussion forum. :) This thread went off-topic discussing movies - and that's what Wes' last comment was in reference to..

The hole in my seats is as big as my knee.. Sucks for me.. I'll need new leather seat covers now...

Suck. You may just put a sheepskin cover over it for now, or you could use DUCT TAPE. I am truly surprised that we havent referred to duct tape once in this forum. It is truly what holds this world together!

Mad'lac
02-04-03, 09:03 PM
Ah yes......Duct tape the redneck cure-all :D

elwesso
02-04-03, 09:07 PM
redneck!!!!! I use duct tape all the time, and i am not a redneck. I believe it to be americas cure all. Hell, there are NASCAR people using duct tape on their cars if something is out of place (ive seen it).

Mad'lac
02-04-03, 09:09 PM
I didn't say you were a redneck, I said duct tape the redneck cure-all. As far as Nascar is concern.....not comments on them :D
I'm more of a NHRA kinda guy and a SCCA guy.

p.s.
I think this is going away from the seats again

elwesso

Ok. I didnt think you would imply that i was a redneck (although in Indiana you can never be sure). Yes i believe that we got off topic again, but at least not as bad as before.

Sal, how did you get such a big hole in your seat? (or maybe how big is your knee ;) )

BTW, they really arent "perforated" (that is what business reply mail cars are), but rather "holy". Thats just my view

I fixed the seats on my truck with duct tape before putting on a new seat cover

BeelzeBob

The hole in my seat is just the size of an average knee. It's not that huge or anything. It just... sucks... :D

hole in seat syndrome sucks :D

I don't use "DUCK" tape! If it's broke I fix it! I just can't bring myself to do hillbilly repairs on ANY of my vehicles particularly my Cadillac! Sorry gang, Just gotta' draw the line in the sand somewhere! If I get a hole in my seat I either have it repaired or replaced!

elwesso
02-06-03, 03:29 PM
I am not saying i would use duct tape on my caddy, especially on something visible. I may use it somewhere it wasnt visible.

But, duct tape is very useful for fixing things, but not necessarily vehicles.

ANYWAY... The Lexus GS has perforated sport seats that ALSO have that - oh damn - was it that look called when the leather kinda folds? Well, I'm damn jealous.. I like the perforated seats but I also like the leather having that luxurious soft-look.. I hope Cadillac gets that one day. I'd trade my seats in...

Really, i like the gathered seats. I looked at 2 STS's this past weekend and both had some rips in the seats.
