Hi all, my 1997 fully loaded Catera had a bumper bender 2 weeks ago. My insurance decided to pay out a settlement instead of fixing it. I know it's crazy, but I like me those Cateras, and found a 2001 Catera Sport with 80K miles for $5,900. The Carfax report came back clean. As for condition, it's mint inside and out. I put down a deposit with sale contingent of what my local Cadi dealer tells me when the service department runs the VIN# ( to ensure no major overhauls). Being an 8 year owner of a 97 Catera, I liked the car a lot, even thought it had it various electrical and starting problems. Basically, this 01' Sport will cost me $2,000 out of pocket after I apply my settlement. Just want other Catera Sport owners to chime in and tell me their thoughts of the Sport model and their annoying problems with the car. Build date on this is 11/2000. My intention is for it to last 2 years so I can buy a 2009 or 2010 CTS.

For $5900 can I go wrong? or should I spend another $3,000 to get a Seville STS. Thanks for your thoughts. Happy Holidays.

The price is way below Kelly Blue Book if your assessment is accurate. I love my 2001 Sport. Mine has 62,000 miles. I've had the common HBV and leaky camcover repairs done but that's it. You're an experienced Cat owner so no need to rehash all the Catera highs & lows but if you've never driven a Sport, you're in for a treat. The ride is firm and the handling sharp. My mechanic was nothing but smiles after his first test drive. He was talking about maybe finding one for himself, even knowing about her particular faults.

I test drove an STS before deciding on the Catera and found it to be more of a highway touring car, hence the Seville Touring Sedan moniker, and sort of cramped inside for such a big car. I'd check the STS forum and learn about her problems, or lack thereof, before deciding.

best of luck with the sport cat. it is alot of car for the money. i love the look and feel of our 01 cat which i moderately upgraded. as you know the main fear is the timing belt issue. which can lead to major engine work if left unattended. i can't say enough about my extended warranty i purchased when i bought my cat last year with 56,000 florida miles on it. the total cost for repairs on my cat since feb 07 has been over $7000 which the extended warranty company has paid all of except the $100 deductible.
timing belt
tensioner
headwork
valves
power steering pump
hydraulic hoses
idler arms
brakes
serpentine belt
and misc. other smaller items
shes running like a new car now. btw you get a rental car also with the warrranty company when your cat goes down, which can be a real help as the caddy dealer is trying to locate parts.....:D

I got mine from florida in a like new condition... paid $8000 and it had 59K on the clock and to this day some 14months and 30K miles later I have had no issues with it. I didnt even had the leacky oil cooler or the heater valve I am assuming they were fixed at the dealer or simply mine never had that issue. I had to change the gaskets on the valve covers because they leacked a little bit. Other then that its a solid car that I can trust in any weather. I love the RWD on it and the way it handles the high speeds... I have never before felt so confident at those 3 digit speeds. I have ridden in a regular catera from teh Pre Facelift model and it felt as an entirely different car.

My words are if you like em stick with them. I am planning on keeping mine and possibly getting another one to complete the 2JZ-GTE swap into and make it a sleepy monster.LOL. So for 2K you cant beat that. I would go with the CS, leave those STS for the grandmas and grandpas out there... LOL

i'd get a first year CTS (2003) or a 2000-2003 lincoln LS... i've got an 05 CTS & i've also got a 2001 LS as my company car. neither one has had one problem. not one. my CTS has 50,000 miles and the LS has 109,000 on it. i bought the ls with 60,000 and drive the mess out of it. i put 50,000 miles on it in 3 years. both are very dependable vehicles.

i don't know if you ever wander over to the CTS forum, but there aren't very many members with problems with these vehicles. especially not compared to the over here on the catera forums...

one of those might be in your price range... just something to consider...

The LS has some major trans issues that need to be ironed out IMO.

well, no problems with mine whatsoever. and from being over on the ls forums, it seems like its far and few between. nothing compared to the catera problems...

Went ahead and bought it. Call Cadi and had a nice service guy give me the history. It was in and out often, but everything was fixed. No major problems. The previous owner had a 6 year 100K extended warranty and brought it in often for every problem. So at least I know it was taken care of. The outside and inside are mint. The only wear is on the 1-2 and Band buttons on the radio. Really noticeable at night, when buttons are backlit. May replace the radio. Here are the photos for those interested. PS. Gonna tint the windows next week and get new rims in the Spring of 08.

looks real good! i really like the looks of a 2000-2001 catera sport! i always wanted on but have always been scared of them...

what size/kind rims you gonna get?

i've always liked the looks of these two cateras. first one has 20's and the second one has 19's...

So far, so good. Again, I've always liked the Catera. Living in Chicago and with the recent snow we've had, I haven't really driven it hard yet to really see the Sport difference. I think 20" and 19" might be too big and not be good for the Chicago potholes. I might go with 18" Chromes. My cousin owns a place auto accessories place, so I'll consult with him. I will post better pictures after I get.

I've been check for those Opel Omega mesh grills, There is one on eBay UK, but they won't sell me one to the U.S. Looking at the Omega's, I actually prefer their more subtle spoiler and mesh grill.

Boy, they really sold a bunch of platinum Sports didn't they? Mine looks just like yours. Well, it did before I added a tinted sunroof spoiler (my son thinks it looks tacky), and new 17" Steinmetz looking 5 spoke alloys for my snow tires. I stuck with 17 inchers so I could switch tires between them as the mood hit. One has the snows and the other a set of summer ultra high performance tires. My advice is to go to 18 inches if you must have bigger wheels. More than that degrades the ride and handling. Thin sidewalls don't flex much and a pothole could even dent the wheels.

I have a black wire mesh grille with a Cadillac crest & shield just like Rinverso and love the look. Got the grille through eBay. Don't pay more than 40 pounds. They're made of steel, not gold. Ask Rinverso about the crest. One tip. Paint the hood opening flat black or the silver will show through the grille. I have an Irmscher front air dam and Steinmetz rocker panels waiting for the spring. I don't want to gamble on snow damage to them yet.

I skipped the tinted windows. I'd like tint but NY State says I can't tint the fronts as dark as I'd like. If the fronts and rears don't match it looks dumb. Inside I added an XM Radio on a flexible floor stalk. In 2008 I will add a cd changer (if my kids don't get me an iPod for Christmas).

I hope you enjoy your Catera Sport as much as I do mine.

What did you search for when looking for your grill on eBay UK. The one I found wouldn't ship to US.

Also, As for the CD changer. I took the 12 Disc changer out of my 97 Catera and will attempt to put it in the 2001 Catera. Same hook-up, just not sure yet if it will work with the steering wheel controls.

Chicago, IL doesn't allow darker tint, but I am am going to chance a dark shade and if I get pulled over, tell them i bought it that way from the Wisconsin dealer (that is where I got the car). I agree 18" is the biggest I'd go with. I really wanted a Black on Black Sport, but they don't exist and that Silver seems to be all over. You probably already know of this site http://www.pbase.com/elvin315/the_catera but it has lots of Catera/Omega Opels modified. I would love to make my Sport look like this one.

the grille was bought on ebay uk from europro, based in germany. it was less than $100. i just did a search and didn't see them listing any items right now though. i bought the caddy shield seperate on ebay.
hey elvin, i promise as soon as i catch up, i'll send your prize of a bent catera valve. merry christmas, robert:histeric:
btw elvin is correct about painting the inside of the front engine bay black behind the grille, it shows up nicer!!

Send them a message through ebay and ask about shipping to the US. They'll charge extra but that's expected. I got my grille, airdam, and side skirts from Poland via eBay. If you want body kit parts you better work fast. They're getting hard to find. Afterall, she's been out of production for 7 years.

I have the BOSE system in my car and Crutchfield sells a 6 disc changer for the Catera. It's literally a plug & play.

We have yearly inspections here and I was told the real dark tint wouldn't pass.

Look at my name and look at the url. That's my site. I pilfered the Cat & Omega pix from all over. They give me ideas and inspiration. Plus I just like looking at the cars.

PS: Watch this Sport Grille ad. I almost guarantee it will be relisted.
