hello everyone i'm a newbie who suckered by a local used car lot. I had car only 1 week before it ran hot. mechanic says that the car wa doped up, it was leaking from center of motor. he couldn't say if the block had holes or if the hed gaskets were blown. water pours out like crazy. so i was wondering if a motor out of a 2003 or 2004 with same option L37 vin code 9 fit in my 2001 dts thanks for any advice or help

I think the motors are compatible. That said, holes in the block are unlikely and head gaskets rarely leak externally. Your problem might be a simpler and cheaper fix. I'd locate the leak before swapping motors. It migjt be as simple as the heater core lines running behind the rear head.

thanks for the info. i called the mechanic back and he said once the pressure builds up the water leaks from the reap or weep holes whatever those are thanks

I have no idea what a "reap or weep hole" is either.

A weep hole is a hole for condensation or small leaks to exit.

The water pump usually has weep holes. Mufflers and the doors usually have weep holes. The water pump is the only place I can think of in the engine compartment.

If it's from the water pump that's not a major problem. Head gaskets are a major problem.

I'd go look at the leak myself.

Hello everyone, thanks for the help nad responses. I`searched and found the leak myself and boy was my feelings hurt. I have a hole on the lower end of my block close to the frame or support :crybaby::mad::rant2:

I know that a used car sale is usually "as is", but I would go back to the lot you bought it from and raise holy hell. Maybe threaten legal action. Nothing to loose.

On another note, most of these nondescript used car lots get their cars from the auction and there is usually a reason they go through the auction.

What kind of a hole? A crack? Pinhole? With a pinhole just drill it, thread it, and screw in a plug. Take us some pictures. I fixed a cast iron Caddy block that threw a rod and made a pretty good sized hole by filing it round with a rat tail file, threading it, and screwing in a pipe plug. I reground the crank found a new rod and piston and it ran another 50,000 miles.

could just use an actual welder to try and fix it too
not JB weld
i mean a mig welder...

You should contact the office of attorney general in your state. The last thing these used car shops want is to be on the radar.

I contacted the office after having the car for 10 days 5 0f which was back on the carlot with them assuring me that it was a simple fix. the attorney general office said once i signed the as is form that basically i was stuck with the car:banghead:

Usually a used car dealer will include a minimal warranty but knocks off some on the price if you'll sign an as-is. It sounds like you outdid yourself.

Yes any 00 to 05 will work. You may need a PCM program update. If you use a 02+ engine you should have a PCM program change it will really help:D

I was going to put a plug in here for you. It's my understanding that the only changes in the 00 -05 engines is the cams. that correct?

Then I was going to say, and AJ can get you a tune to work :)

I have a sheet they comes with replacement engines. It says if you have engine broadcast code XXX, YYY, ZZZ, or TTT you will need to get a VCI calibration.
I will post the info tomorrow. I had lost it but found it last week.

isnt the different cams the reason why the 05 Vin 9 DTS is rated at 292 HP instead of 300?
correct AJ?

No, I don't think so Jason. I think the only reason the rating dropped 8hp is because the way they rate the motors changed ever so slightly for '05 or '06. I may be mistaken, but I've heard that a few times before.

Not quite... it was mainly imports that took the biggest hit from the revised SAE ratings... some domestics actually jumped higher from the new testing procedures. Granted, pretty much all of them were only within a 3% variance - plus or minus. I know both the Viper and the 'Vette ended up "gaining" power... in fact, when the new DTS came out it was rated at 291 I believe, now it's at 292. The biggest reason is unlike many import (especially Japanese) manufacturers, Detroit's been known to underpromise and overdeliver in terms of power on more than one occasion.

Underpromise and overdeliver........Even as far back as 1967. The 427c.i./"435"hp Corvette, if I remember my hot rod days correctly, was actually within a shade of 500 hp, "stock". Several U.S. manufacturers played with advertised horsepower a lot - I know Dodge had some real 440 screamers, too.

Then we got into the SAE, rwhp, flywheel, gosh-knows-what method of quoting/advertising hp.

Today, with the tickle of a computer, you can juggle hp figures to suit whatever tickles your fancy.

The cam change happened mid year 01 or 02 correct ? Actually I think the real cam change happened in 03 BUT sometime in 01 they issued a TSB for a rough idle condition which resulted in a cam change also. Is that about right AJ? I'm trying to keep up :)

I don't think there where any cam changes.
