Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and was looking for some help. I'm looking for an 88-92 Brougham, preferably d'elegance. My dad used to have one, but he sold it in 1998. I've been looking on ebay and I've found two nice ones for seemingly good prices, but I am not sure if they are legitimate. Any advice/outlook would be appreciated =). (BTW this post might have come up more than once as I got an error before and so I'm going to post without the hyperlinks).

These are the cars I've been looking at:

The first one is nice, but is missing some trim on the passenger side. I have never seen one in that blue with matching body cladding...

I think consensus around here is that you gotta have the 5.7L. Especially if you're looking to pay good dough for a low-mileage, top condition car. Non 5.7L are way cheaper.

They both seem to be nice. I see you are a fan of the blue colors. I agree with most everyone else on here about the 5.0 liter engine. It is a dog. My 87 has it and its fine for getting me around town. Out on the highway it is a real nice ride but no power. Look for a 5.7 liter. Find the one you want with the options you want. Look not only on e-bay but autotrader.com

Good Luck

No no no CaddymanTom. Your 5.0 liter engine is the Olds 307 which was alot doggier than the Chevy 5.0 liter 305 engines. Those '91's have the Chevy 305 which is completely different and better than the Olds, not to mention TBI over carb'd. In '91 and '92 the 5.0 liters were better, so don't let the Olds rap affect them. But from '87-'89, you didn't have a choice but the Olds, so it sounds like what this guy is gonna want, engine-wise, is either a '90 350 (option over Olds) or any Brougham in '91 or '92, with preference to the 350.

Greg,

You are correct again. Don't get me wrong I love my 87 but would welcome a little more pizzaz under the hood. Thanks for the correction

I felt the same way with '90 Brougham which had the Olds 307, Tom. I always kicked myself for having gotton the only 90-92 Bro with the Olds, so I always wished that I had one of the Chevy engine Bros. I would creep out of everything w/ people honking like crazy, and on the highway I could not pass at all, nor could I even easily get it above 60 w/o flooring her constantly. Hence, I would be satisfied with a 305 '91 or '92. I drove a 305 Bro, and it was all I ever wanted. I would prefer the 350, but I hear the 305 lasts just as long and gets better fuel economy than the 350 or the Olds 307.

I'm actually on a pretty strict budget and after looking around a 5.7 liter seems out of the question for price reasons. And yes, I'm pretty sold in getting a dark blue car or a tan one. Thanks for the advice, if and when I decide on a car I'll post back here.

i just bought an 84 Olds 98 Regency Brougham with the same engine and it seems to have a little and I do me little more kick then the Broughams does which i equate to the lesser weight of the car. I looks nice next to my 1987 Brougham. I would post some pics but I believe I am out of space on the forum :(

I do like d-body Olds Regencies; I like their resemblance to the Fleetwood, but with that Olds feeling. But I also hear that the Olds engine was more powerful before the 1986 implementation across the all GM cars; something like 50 horses more powerful (I'm probably just optimistic and wrong), but I do recall hearing that. The Regency is d-body, too, so I'm not so sure it's that much lighter than the Fleetwoods.

I have an '83 Old Delta 88 b-body wagon with the older Olds 307, and it's a workhorse. But the car is lighter, being a b-body, than the d-bodies, and I think the engine has more power. Someone also told me my engine was a 350, but Olds didn't offer that in '83. :bang2:

I also like the old Buick Park Avenue Electra, which were d-bodies, and I think they had the Olds engine (someone correct if I'm wrong), while the b-body LeSabre had the underpowered Buick V6.

Basically I like all d-bodies, and they all look nice together. Someday, I'm gonna get one of each and put them all next to each other in a nice trio. I just wish Pontiac made a d-body car, because I kinda like the styling of the old Parisseane. Makes me think, how come Cadillac never made a b-body car? I'd probably have been something like the Cailis if they had ever done one in the 80's...just my random curiosities. ;)

I too like the Park Avenues of the same years. I have two Oldsmobiles from 1975 one a 98 and one an 88 convertible. Both have the 455 in them. THe 98 has a powerful silky feel to it. It moves the big heavy car gracefully. In the 88 it is a muscle car. I can't tell you how many times I have smoked the tires taking off from a stop light.
The 84 98 has an aluminum hood and trunk and the feds lifted the 5 mph bumpers that year so it is missing some weight there. I should find out what the weight difference is between the Olds and the Brougham.

So I'm not the only one ...

I thought the Pontiac Bonneville up to 1981 was also in the same D body family as the Ninety-eight, Electra, and Cadillac... I'm going on memory here. I also like all the big GM cars up to about 1984..

I'm pretty sure it was the b-body, for the 80s at least. I like d-bodies best from the 80s because of the parallel rear quarter windows, which is not as prevalent in the 70s. Then somewhere around '82 the Bonneville got moved to the g-body, while the Pariseanne remained Pontiac's only RWD and it sat on the b-body.

I also thought that the Caprice classic Brougham LS is a nice looking car. I know when it came out he sales guy at the Chevy dealer told me it was better then its Cadillac counterpart, the Brougham, I laughed and walked across he street to the Cadillac Dealer.

^^ well he was probably talking about the Olds engine in the old Broughams, whereas Chevys had the 305 and the 350 long before. Why do you think Cadillac started putting Chevy engines in their big RWDs? ;)
