What is the exact procedure to do this? ive searched and found diff things each time. Does the car have to be running? Or just up to operating temp. Also, where is the fill plug located? I know the drain plug is on the bottom in the back on the drivers side. there are 2 plugs on the side, one near the back above the drain plug, and one thats higher up towards the front near the sensor? Also, i have Mobil 1 synthetic ATF mercon III http://mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Synthetic_ATF.aspx, is that the correct kind or do i need to get http://mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_Dexron_VI_ATF.aspx

Most things on all my cars I do myself. Tranny stuff I always leave to the experts. The dealer will do it for 150 bucks and they have a machine that will get it all out of the torque converter. They will unhook the cooler and suck it out through the collant lines getting all fresh stuff back in.
Don't do it with the car runing! It will destroy it. It will pump all the old fluid out before you can get new stuff in.
Having said that with car running people have done it. You must be able to fill the transmission up as the car is running and wait for the fluid to come out of the collant line clean, it requires a bit of skill and at least two folks. You have to be able to get the fluid in as fast as the pump is pumping it out.

im going to school to be a mechanic, but today i didnt do it because i wasnt sure where the fill plug was and my teacher said dont take a guess because if you pick the wrong 1 a spring can shoot out and your dead in the water ect ect so i didnt do it. perhaps ill bite the bullet this time and take it to the dealer.

I attempted this myeslf on my 2004 model (3.6L, but that makes no difference). There's no tranny dipstick or fill tube (as with many newer cars regardelss of make), so it's virtually impossible to get enough fluid back into the tranny by doing it yourself. Easy to drain, but nearly impossible to refill to the proper level. The "plug" at the higher level is for fill, but the fluid level has to be above that level when the car is on level ground. You really need to take it to a mechanic or a dealer, and I trusted only the dealer on this one. For $200 (drive out), they flushed and re-filled the entire system and fully stand behind the work.

First off, if you are going to do this yourself realize that the 2005's used Dexron V and not Mercon III or Dexron III, and that for 2006 GM introduced Dexron VI. My understanding is that Dexron V(5) is somewhere around 95% synthetic, where Dexron VI(6) is a full synthetic. So Dexron VI is definitely the way to go.

Secondly, all automatics have to be running and in park with the car level when topping off the fill. The fill plug is on the drivers side toward the back of the transmission. If you going to do this yourself and you do not have a way of pumping the fluid into the hole, you could build a long funnel with 5/8 clear vinyl tubing (from Home Depot) and snake it down from the engine compartment into the hole. Though the tubing would go below the hole then back up, gravity would allow it to fill until topped off, and then when you pull the tubing and it would drain out until filled correctly.

But as stated above it would be much easier to have the dealer use the machine, or a quick lube place if they have the correct adapters for the hoses (which most dont) and they have Dexron VI(6) (which most dont, but should soon). Realize that the recomended fluid change is at 100,000 miles for this vehicle.

think im just gonna take it to the dealer it seems like a pain in the ass to do
