ok, here we go,

I have a 98 catera with 205,000 kms on it,

when I bought it, the previous owner said the timing belt was done at $170,000, but I have no record of it. so I have no way to make sure he's not lieing

I also called to make sure the timing belt was done under the recall, and it was, but they can't tell me when, they just know that it was done.

so checking on carfax in july 2002 the car had 92,000 kms on it ( what I can find ,the recall came out in may 2002) I assume the earliest the car would have had it done was around 90,000 kms.

first question is how often should I change my timing belt? I'm tried looking it up and I see 100,000 kms, and 160,000 kms, so I don't know which to go by.

second, I assume there is no way of knowing if it was changed in the passed year by looking at it, is there?

Thanks for any help you can give me

Change every 4 years or 40,000 miles (whichever comes first) No record - change it!
