View Full Version : Guitar solos....greatest of all time? I~LUV~Caddys8792 11-29-07, 12:41 AM Sitting here listening to Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song" has really got me thinking...what are the greatest guitar solos of all time? "Cowboy Song" has a great one from 2:26 to 3:07, especially that part from 2:53 to 3:07...where they've got the two lead guitars matching each other...it sounds so crisp and tight. Whenever that comes on, I can't help but solo!
Let's see, what else....
Stairway To Heaven....duh.
Rush's "Limelight"
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking"...the beginning.
Rolling Stones "Monkey Man" from roughly 1:48 to 3:09
The ending of "Comfortably Numb" gdwriter 11-29-07, 12:58 AM I can think of a couple right off the top of my head:
Layla — Derrick & the Dominos (aka Eric Clapton)
Long, Cool Woman in a Black Dress — The Hollies dkozloski 11-29-07, 12:59 AM Chet Atkins did a live concert with The Boston Pops years ago that was indescribable. He prefaced one piece by stating that he didn't know why he did it to himself but when put in such a position he felt obligated to play the most difficult music he knew and he did exactly that, perfectly. Me + Guitar Hero 80s + Flock of Seagulls
And I raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnn....
I also like anything The Edge does with U2. gdwriter 11-29-07, 01:46 AM I also like anything The Edge does with U2.:yeah: sikohsix 11-29-07, 02:47 AM 1. Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower 2. Deep Purple Bloodsucker 3. B.B. King The Thrill is gone Stairway To Heaven
1. Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower
^^There's my list. The Stairway to Heaven solo is a bit overrated, IMO. It is very fitting to the song, but not all that hard to play. It's simple pentatonic scales, but Page's speed in certain parts is it what makes it great.
My list of great solos:
Classic Rock
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd.
Pigs - Pink Floyd
Hotel California - Eagles
Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin
80s-90s
Holy Diver - Dio
The Trooper - Iron Maiden
2 Minutes to Midnight - Iron Maiden
The Unforgiven - Metallica
Fade to Black - Metallica arnauts 11-29-07, 03:40 AM What about Free Bird? sikohsix 11-29-07, 04:00 AM LOL @ arnauts:bouncy: EcSTSatic 11-29-07, 08:31 AM Anyone remember the movie Crossroads? It's a struggle for the soul, a duel with the devil.
Check out these clips http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm50YoK_wH8
The Crossroads guitar duel clip is tops. Chicano-Mexicano 11-29-07, 08:36 AM Nigel Tufnel Spinal Tap Hell Hole

I hitchiked to San Francisco from LA to see Jeff Beck.
Rod Stewert was the singer.
Want to hear Jeff Beck sing?
"NAZZ are BLUE"
Did you see his hot rod collection on SPEED ch? zz_camaro_zz 12-03-07, 11:33 AM Cliffs of Dover
I know its a whole instrumental, but its good. Silver Dollar 12-03-07, 02:50 PM Hard to argue with any of the aforementioned artist.
I've got to add one of the best that wasn't included.
AC/DC. Angus Young can play.
The following song is "Riff Raff". If you're at work, don't worry. Just turn it up as loud as it will go and if the person in the cube next to you complains tell them to jam it up their corn hole.
DExG_NwBEUM Silver Dollar 12-03-07, 03:49 PM One more from AC/DC if you don't mind, post Bob Scott.
"Thunderstruck"
Again, turn it up.....way the frack up. And if Betty from accounting waddles down to you office to read you the riot act tell her to get lost or your kick her square in the poon tanny!
zvoeeq-BH4w smokiejoe 12-03-07, 04:06 PM I do agree....Angus Young can play with the best of them. Silver Dollar 12-03-07, 04:40 PM Should have been "Bon Scott" not "Bob Scott".
Bon Scott choked on his own vomit.
Bob Scott choked on Scott.
Sorry for the typo. submariner409 12-03-07, 04:46 PM Just about anything by Mark Knopfler, with or without Dire Straits. For the vinyl collector, he has some specacular work on the backs of several 12" 45rpm promos. One is an all instrumental of "Why Worry?" Played through all tube electronics and a pair of MartinLogan electrostatics its goosebumps. JimHare 12-03-07, 11:46 PM C'mon guys - you can't do a gee-fiddle solo thread without Blackmore..
Child in Time
Highway Star from MIJ
Black Night from the Nobody's Perfect mid-80s live album
etc etc
If you've never heard him, Roy Buchanan could rip off a solo with so many incredible fingerings that it sent shivers down your spine. And he never even broke a sweat. Try "Chicago Smokeshop" on for size, or any of the ones from his early album "Live Stock"
And Steve Morse ain't no slouch...
There's a million of 'em.. :) I~LUV~Caddys8792 12-04-07, 12:19 AM Shoot to Thrill is the best AC/DC out there. heavymetals 12-04-07, 01:09 AM another Feynman freak.
You should see my collection of books and movies on RF.
Also, believe it or not, I worked for Blackmore and did part of a North American tour with RAINBOW. EcSTSatic 12-04-07, 08:46 AM You guys have motivated me. Last night I hooked up my old Pioneer quartz lock turntable to my stereo. With my new laptop I plan to play an burn my old vinyl to CDs over the Christmas holidays. Most of my LPs have only been played once or twice. I used to copy them right away onto cassettes (history lesson) and put the vinyl away.
I'm using Roxio's Creator 10 (http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/creator/suite/features.html) JimHare 12-06-07, 08:36 PM another Feynman freak.

Great minds always think alike.
Just slightly off topic, what's your take on RB? So many people dismiss him as a world-class a$$ hole but he also seems, at least in the taped interviews I've seen him in, and the few print interviews, to be rather humorous - I think he says stuff off-hand and the people hear it and take it as gospel instead of the joke it is. I've met the other four guys and they all seem pretty down to earth - and I've talked with people who've met RB at a bar or restaurant up on Long Island and they say he's very approachable (90% of the time) and very funny one-on-one.
