Around here you take the car to the state troopers and they find the number for you. To get a title for it we go to DMV, post a bond equal to the value of the car in case another owner shows up and you get a replacement title. Crown Vic Owner 11-26-07, 05:19 PM just purchased a 62 sedan deville 4 dr at an auction with no title, got home and found out the vin plate is missing, is there duplicate plate anywhere else on the car need help id tell you how to do it WAY easier, but that would be illegal. A lot of the olders cars had them there. 62deville 11-27-07, 04:34 PM thanks, i'll crawl around and check those places out JTraik 11-28-07, 01:55 AM This forum is not well versed with the real old Cads... I would suggest going to the technical/authenticity discussion board at www.cadillaclasalleclub.org There are a ton of old timers there who have extensive knowledge of these older Cads, im sure you will get an answer. 62deville 11-28-07, 06:18 AM Thanks, it's still a real cool site ewill3rd 11-28-07, 07:44 AM I know a lot of older cars like that had the VIN in strange places. My oldest car had it riveted to the firewall. I don't think the law mandated the VIN in 7 places during that time period. I could certainly be mistaken. Be sure to check the door jambs. Junkman 11-28-07, 01:34 PM Check the engine block and the transmission case. A lot of the olders cars had them there. The VIN is located on the engine block, but if the original engine has been changed, then it is of no value. GM kept changing the location of both the hidden VIN and engine VIN. In some cases, you would have to remove the body from the frame to view the hidden VIN. The first place to check is the engine block number, which on some is located on the rear of the block behind the valve cover on the drivers side. You will find a flat boss that it is stamped into. If it has the original transmission, you will find the VIN stamped on the left side of the transmission case, just above the pan. On some years, it is also located on the side of the engine block. Here is a site (http://groups.msn.com/196364CadillacCommunity/differentbodystylesbyvin.msnw) that shows where the VIN is located on the 1963-64 Cadillacs. If you still can't find the VIN, take whatever paperwork that you have from the seller to your local police department, and ask them to have someone from the auto theft bureau come to inspect the car to determine the VIN. Don't expect them to show up quickly, because usually there are very few people assigned to do t his task. If they have all the information as to vehicle year and make, they can check to see where it will be located on your car before showing up. After they inspect the number, they will give you the paperwork that will be necessary for you to have a title issued in your name. In some instances, they will also assign a new VIN and VIN plate to the vehicle in a conspicuous place so the next owner will not have to go through the same thing over again. In CT, you have to have a VIN inspection on all vehicles coming from out of state, and that can be a hassle with older vehicles, since many are not located in what is the normal place today. I had to remove the windshield lower molding to view the VIN on my 1969 Cadillac, since it is hidden under the molding, behind the windshield. low ken 11-29-07, 12:02 PM do shop manuals decode vin numbers? 1970 j0170769 is what I'm looking for.thanks 62deville 11-29-07, 04:11 PM Thanks, caddydaddy you've been a huge help, i'm just trying to this this a weekend driver, spend little money, have alot of fun 62deville z06bigbird 11-30-07, 01:43 AM By federal law the VIN# number is located in at least seven places, some of which are secret. I know for a fact that my 1978 Cadillac Commercial Chassis has only one hidden number. I know this because the discussion came up at a car meet, and one of the participants was the head of the police department that investigates stolen vehicles, and he made the call to a Federal Agency confirm this information. I know that my 1995 vehicle has the numbers on every body panel in the form of mylar covered decals. | |
