I recently purchase a 1996 Fleetwood, and when the trunk lid is released it fly open very fast, as if it was being held down with a lot of force. . . did that come out right ? ? It flys open so fast that if you where standing to close it would knock you down. Is there some type of adjustment for that on the trunk hinges. I had a 94 Brougham and it released nice and smooth, trunk lid opened nice and easy, kinda slow . . . not this trunk . . . my wife even asked me about it ! ! !
Any suggestion as to whats going on? ?
Thanks - Hap

Hey, welcome to the board!

Yeah, I know what you mean. There should be some adjustment bars (not really sure what to call them, let's call them "trunk tension bars") at the back of the trunk, near the hinges inside. There's one on each side, and they are resting in a certain slot in a little rack. They say you need a special tool to adjust them, but if you can get a hollow metal bar of some kind, you can use that to move the trunk tension bar up or down to a different slot. I think if you want the trunk to have less tension, you need to move it up.

It was like this on my 89 Brougham. I can't imagine technology changing that much since then.

Thank for the info. . . it is dark outside, but I'm going out with my flashlight and take a look :-)

Thanks . . . will let you know how I make out.

Actually, I think you need to move them DOWN for less tension

That trunk lid will 'fly up' if you put too many bodies back there. Purely scientific reason. As bodies deteriorate, gases form inside of bodies and bodies expand. At some point, however, the bodies can burst. Not sure which is worse: expanded bodies or burst bodies.

Yes, I believe later models included a "Decomposition Gas Pressure Relief System", which vented out bad air and sprayed fresh air and deodorants in to keep your trunk smelling like new. Not even police dogs can tell!

Strange, . . . all the bodies are gone, . . (for now) and the "Decomposition Gas Pressure Relief System" did a good job venting and spraying the fresh air . . (work very well too, the dog went to the wrong car several times) . . . . . but the lid just don't want to cooperate . . . . . tho on a few times I thought I seen this large beam of light shining down from the sky ? ? ? . . . nah . . forget it

It's a nifty device for getting cats off your trunk lid. The second they settle down, pop the lid from some hidden place and see them fly.

Actually, thanks for asking this question. Mine goes up fast enough to K-O me if it hit.

Another one of Cadillac's innovative designs, I actually had to replace my valve (GM P#25312197) the other day, I was loading a grocery bag and the pasta sauce jar in the bag smacked the valve... its really impressive on how well the system vents the trunk... but at a price, the valve was $55 from RockAuto!

I really don't think it is a faulty thing .Have you ever seen a W220 S Class MB w/ openin the trunk ?
Most Cadillacs also are opened fast ,I can't speak for the latest models though .

I should check my mom's 95 Deville. It's probably more similar in design to the newer Fleetwood. Her trunk doesn't really pop open too fast at all. It's quick, but gentle.
