the title...

and I guess your "dipshit" is directed at the naysayers rather than at Jobs? :hmm:

"Apple's problem is it still believes the way to grow is serving caviar in a world that seems pretty content with cheese and crackers," gripes former Chief Financial Officer Joseph Graziano.

LOL. I love reading old news. Predictions are fun.

I haven't seen a Gateway computer since they left the barn door open and the horse got out.

Yeah... I sure hope that you were being sarcastic.

There were so many naysayers when Jobs came back in '97, however Apple has had a consistent string of successes since his return - Apple Retail is just one of many.

Jobs is to Apple what Gates is to Microsoft right?

Not quite... Microsoft will be fine without Gates (they essentially are now), any two-bit monkey (Ballmer) can steal other people's stuff. However, history has shown that Jobs provides Apple's core vision... they'll be in a tough spot after he steps down from the company.

I meant that Jobs founded Apple like Gates founded M-Soft right?

Steve Jobs is the source of that whole Apple/Mac elitist snob thing. They up their market share from miniscule to barely there and they all go nuts about him. Their sales are almost up to that of the last PC manufacturer that collapsed in failure from poor management and it's being touted as the second coming of the saviour.

You can all groan and moan and try to downplay his importance to the company all you like, but the simple fact is he is vital to the company and history proves it. By 1995-96, any time anything was written about Apple, the word "beleaguered" usually accompanied it. When it comes to computers, the market share war is over, we know which business model (not necessarily product) won.... however, everyone loves to over-look their dominance in the music (and related) industry. Only a "snobbish and elitist" attitude would keep someone from recognizing that Apple is a dominant player... just look at flash-memory for example.. Apple controls 25% of the worlds flash memory... everyone else is allowed what's left over. From a purely business standpoint, Apple is massive... I can't understand why anyone would scoff a company whose market cap recently surpassed that of IBM's and is currently sitting at $154B.

I'm not just your typical Apple fan-boy... I bought into Apple at $14/share right after Jobs came back as interim-CEO, and then again after their first post-Jobs split. So as far as I'm concerned, Jobs is integral to the company as both a user and a shareholder... and there's not a single shred of evidence to the contrary.

Yeah, but you can't look at Apple really as a computer company. Macs are vital to the design and publishing industries, etc. -- but they've become so much more diverse (and stronger as a result).

And believe me, I'm the last one to come to Apple's defense -- I have yet to drink any of the Kool-Aid (no Mac, no iPod, no iPhone). But there is no question that they are much stronger w/Jobs than w/o him. Even if he doesn't come up w/all of the ideas -- he's a great pitch man.

And the whole elitist/snob thing is part of the appeal. They are the "in" thing right now. Even if you don't need a Mac, or a PC would work better for you or be cheaper, a lot of people just want to say they use a Mac.

They absolutely cannot rest on their laurels though. They've set themselves up w/the popularity of the iPod to get taken down by the next best thing. The "counter culture" image they've had all these years is now threatened by their dominance in portable music...

I agree that Steve Jobs has done wonders for Apple. They got their ass kicked in the compure world and branched out into other markets. Unfortunately they can no longer call themselves the underdog. They are now in the position of having to defend themselves in the same way the other big dogs they used to skewer have had to do. Let's see if he can pull off an identity change.

Everyone and their either dead or alive 3rd cousin twice removed are now going to try and knock off the iPhone. That HTC Touch from Sprint is one of the first and is pretty cool from what I've heard.

The public doesn't really care if Apple is on top or bottom. Their products are "cool" and "shiny" and thats the end of it.

My Mac Mini is cool and metallic. :)

Was your employer aware that you had a major conflict of interest when you were thumping the tub to buy Macs?

Am I suppose to recommend against what I believe to be a superior product simply because I own stock in the company? I may have selected the options and guided the presentation of them but I was not the one who had ultimate control of the purse-strings...

We bought into Google at it's IPO, am I suppose to recommend everyone use Yahoo simply because I own interest in Google?

Yes koz... your found me out, I'm going to abuse my position at a smallish non-profit organization in order to artificially jack up the price of my Apple stock... now I have to go flee to my Dr. Evil Island..

Apple is an electronics and design company with a (successful) software business on the side. It's really quite brilliant how little they actually have to involve themselves in the hardware aspect of the computer side anymore now that they've adopted the intel architecture.

In case anyone missed it, it's now "Apple, Inc." not "Apple Computer, Inc.".

I just wondered because an order of 120 or so units from a computer company as small as Apple would be a pretty large perturbation.

You're absolutely right... Apple is such small potatoes. How could a company ever expect to survive by only selling 1.76 million Macintoshes and a measly 9.8 million iPods with a pathetic net profit of $818M on $5.42B of revenue last quarter?

Honestly, were more sensible heads like yourself to prevail at Apple they would just close up shop already...

You're right. Why attack the viability of a company when they're doing such a good job of destroying themselves.
