View Full Version : What's Your Fave Vista Gadget ? Cadillacboy 11-24-07, 05:05 PM There're many cool gadgets w/ Vista but I namely like and find wireless network the best
CPU Meter and Battery Life Monitor also so nice design .
I also downloaded easy FTP access but it failed to connect .No problem anyway ha ha lol Booooooring... another blatant copy for M$. Sorry but the whole widget fad wore off three or so months after 10.4 was released - and that was in the Spring of '05. I hate the way Vista handles networking. Night Wolf 11-24-07, 08:45 PM I like the XM one myself, it is quite useful and handy.... the gauges are just cool :) RightTurn 11-24-07, 10:41 PM The only ones I use are the analog clock and calendar display. I'm boring. slk230mb 11-24-07, 10:43 PM I turned that off right away. I suppose it may be worth revisiting. codewize 11-25-07, 01:46 AM The most useful gadget in Vista is the 'Start' button

copied from my computer thread, here is my current sidebar, I gotta say, that XM has brought new life to my XM plan, I honestly haven't used it in the last year and a half... keep paying nearly $15/month for it tho was getting ready to cancel it... but now I use it alot, so thats really cool.

It's like having text messaging on your phone, useless, just call the damn person and get it over with for god sakes.
I want someone to provide me a list of features that they think are useful and provide a function that I don't have in XP Pro with Outlook. Please tell me all the fabulous things added the the OS because I'm not seeing it. To each their own :)
I am very fond of XP, I've been using it for years and its an awesome operating system.
I remember when I first used XP I coudln't stand the bubbly look and put everything to windows classic.... then I dunno, I got tired of my desktop looking my my 1996 ThinkPad all over again... so I liked the new look.
Same thing now... I like looking at the flashy things. Since I don't do computer-intensive programs, I am not taking a performance hit by running it. I can change Vista to look like Win95... but... that would be taking a step backwords for me.... personally, I really, really like the new look, alot. Yeah, no doubt if I wanted max performance from my budget-value laptop, I'd turn all the fun stuff off and make it look likw Win95.... but truth is, it's doing everything I ask it to, and more, while running all the fancy stuff perfectly fine. I used to be into computers alot and all the down to basics stuff for max performance, but eh, not so much more. All I do is surf the web, a lot of forums, pay bills online, IM, e-mail etc.... everything well within my computers performance range, and the other things... are just cool, I like the neon clock, the CPU and RAM gauges are just cool to me... the instant weather is nice, and most of all, the XM, its just always there, always on, I am listening to XM Hitlist right now as I type this... just non stop, and I don't need to open another page or login, its just there. To me, I'd rather have that then not.
Plus navigating thru Vista is getting better and better, I really like it, very logical setup. I'm glad I've got it, and haven't had a problem yet. I'd take it over XP given the choice. I don't have alot of old programs and old hardware I am trying to use on this computer, which I guess is were the problems are found. Would I upgrade my old XP machine to Vista? No.... but I figure when a new OS comes out, thats a good time to get a new computer, I was gonna wait even another year, but my desktop quit, and I was tired of the desktop thing, so I got a new laptop, with Vista home premium.
But, just give it a few more years... XP will be old news, just as previous versions of Windows are.... It's funny, my Aptiva was Win98SE, I really liked 98se, it was a great OS, 2000 was good too, ME was a joke.... but when XP came out, everyone hated it, said it was a resource hog and didn't want the flashy stuff, and they would stick with 98se or 2000.... well, now those folks are using XP and are the ones that swear by it now.... just the way it is.
Just as with XP, if you don't like the flashy stuff, you can run it in Windows classic, which makes it look likw Win2000, which really isn't different then Win95... It's there as an option, but its just not for me :) well, now those folks are using XP and are the ones that swear by it now.... just the way it is.
the only people I hear swearing by anything are Mac users. (I guess that is why I am jumping the fence)
I hate Vista, but XP is no walk in the park. The most useful gadget in Vista is the 'Start' button

POTD RightTurn 11-25-07, 06:25 PM To each their own :)
Exactly. The Mac/PC thing is like Ford vs Chevy. Pick the one that suits you and STFU. That is all. As long as you don't pick Ford. Or Lincoln (Navigator) RightTurn 11-25-07, 06:35 PM I'll pick whatever I want. And you may do the same. lawfive 11-25-07, 07:09 PM Nice feet. RightTurn 11-25-07, 07:12 PM Thanks. :alchi: wait4me6920 11-25-07, 11:49 PM feet like that - I'd prolly do the pedicure thing with my teeth... If I had to look at all that crap tying up precious CPU cycles and valuable RAM I'd shoot myself. fckin A, I couldn't agree more. I get charged 10 damn cents for everyone someone sends me :nono:
back on topic...the only gadget I use is network throughput....I use a crystalfontz LCD for CPU usage and RAM used. Exactly. The Mac/PC thing is like Ford vs Chevy. Pick the one that suits you and STFU. That is all.
It's more like Ford vs Cadillac. RightTurn 11-26-07, 12:46 AM It's more like Ford vs Cadillac.
And if I need a truck, I'll pick a Ford. Shall we move along? kthx. And if I need a truck, I'll pick a Ford. Shall we move along? kthx.
And if I need to get stuff done I want solid and quick... not something I can stack things on. RightTurn 11-26-07, 01:04 AM Well, then why did you bother to post in this thread? It's titled "What's Your Fave Vista Gadget." Obviously, you have nothing to contribute. Merely pointing out that the proper analogy is that of a "common" product vs a "premium" product... other than that I'll be sure to check with you as to where I can and cannot post, kthx Don't mind RT, she is just annoyed that she is one of the few who thinks the Navigator is a nice vehicle :D gothicaleigh 11-26-07, 12:32 PM My favorite Vista feature is true DirectX10. Sooo pretty.
As for the sidebar, I like the analog clock and CPU/RAM tach gauges. Vroom-vroom!
The people who complain about Vista, are those who don't have enough computer to run it. 99% of the time that I hear someone b!tch about it, it comes down to:
a) They have never used it.
b) Their "uber" P4 machine with 2 massive gigs of RAM runs it much slower than XP for some reason...
c) They blame Microsoft because their favorite software company didn't update it's drivers for it.
As for it being slower than XP: Get a 2gb flashdrive and ReadyBoost it. Vista with ReadyBoost is much faster loading than XP without. There is a reason that Microsoft included that feature on Vista. Think of it as more of a requirement than an option. It is easy to blame Microsoft because they wont reveal source code to hardware manufacturers so they can write proper drivers. Why do you think Mac and Unix are so much more stable? RightTurn 11-26-07, 03:14 PM Don't mind RT, she is just annoyed that she is one of the few who thinks the Navigator is a nice vehicle :D
That "ignore" button solves a lot of problems. :coffee: I'm just sayin. | |
