View Full Version : Dog food. Corn free. ? So, the gf needs to find some dog food that doesn't use corn as a filler. We've got a Bulldog, a Mastiff and two mini daschounds and we think the mastiff is allergic to corn. Anyone know of any off the top of their heads? I'm going to spend the morning looking online to see what I can find... Crown Vic Owner 11-24-07, 01:06 PM tablefood maybe a good option Cadillacboy 11-24-07, 01:22 PM I bet some salty cookies should serve your turn .This is what we give our dogs . I checked the bags of Purina One and cans of Science Diet I feed my dog and both list corn or corn gluten high on the list of ingredients.
When my previous dog was sick, the vet had me cooking for the dog - ground beef and rice mainly. I would cook up a couple day's worth and store it in a container in the fridge - with the dog's name on it so none of my kids would think it was leftovers for the taking. Cadillacboy 11-24-07, 01:51 PM I just remind that never give a chicken ,turkey for your dogs . Yep, rice ,beef is good but lamb . It's too greasy . You can also think of some maccaroni w/ a cheese Yea, she used to make food for them but its a little more time consuming than we want to bother with. I found a good list of foods that don't have corn in them...just have to find somewhere to buy them, preferably in bulk. Off to work for now, more research later. I'm sure I can buy some of them online for cheap...
http://www.4pawsu.com/dogfood.htm dr siddeley 11-24-07, 04:02 PM ref dog food, this is not a wind up but the gospel truth,we have a saluki and just after we had her we met a lady at a dog show who introduced us to the BARF diet for dogs [bones and real food]her research into the history of dogs back to the wolves [all dogs are decsendend, ant from the wolf] gave her an insight as to what a dogs diet would have been before super markets,at this time she had a dog costing a fortune in vets bills, briefly thus[i am condensing a lot of info]we feed our saluki RAW CHICKEN CARKASS,we get free free from the butcher and raw[uncooked]chicken wings legs anything, but it has to be raw[wolves did not know how to cook!]every 5/6 days one day no food at all, then after the non food day a vegetable day all types of veg put through a juicer[not a blender]throw the juice away and feed the pulp, and then back raw chicken, its when you cook chicken the bones harden and spinter and would kill the dog,we take all that the butcher would descard and its free! dog waste is minimall and pellet like, a lot less mess, yes the first time we gave a raw chicken wing we were terified, phone in one hand for the vet but she was fine,we have had her 6 years now on this diet, let me know if you want more info,OH these mumyfied pigs ears and dog chewie thing are cured with cyanied NOT GOOD FOR YOUR DOG you should not change diets strait away but slowly over about 2/3 weeks and at first the dog may retch as it ajusts to proper dog food, when you think about it dogs /wolves would kill a rabbit eat everything apart from the fur, meet bones, what was in the gullet/stomach[vegetable.lettuce,ect] no posh dog food around then, you only have to go back as far as the last world war,dog food?what dog food?they had our scraps or a bone from the butcher[if he had any]the marketing boys hand,t envented dog food as we know it today,we travel over seas with our dog and feeding her so easy and if we cannot find some chicken we cook her what we have, OH the ladys dog that lived at the vets??he was 7 then he is now 12 and never been back to the vet!!kindest regards from a dog lover in England gdwriter 11-24-07, 04:04 PM The corn allergy is a hard once since it shows up so much in dog food. My friend who raises guide dog puppies has a golden retriever with allergies out the wazoo. I think she feed Kobie dried emu.
Anyway, you might check out the dog food department at Petsmart (http://www.petsmart.com/family/index.jsp?cp=2767032&categoryId=2767072&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2767072&fbc=1&fbn=Taxonomy%7CFood+Center) and Petco (http://www.petco.com/petco_Page_PC_productlist_Nav_183_N_22+92.aspx) if you have one near you. They'll have more selection than you'll find at Target or the grocery store. On their Web sites, you can look up the ingredients on individual brands and varieties.
You might also ask your vet for a recommendation. Good luck. One thing our vet said about cooking for our dog was to boil the ground meat to cut down on the fat content. Forty pounds lasts us about six days. Freaking dogs eat more than I do.
If they don't like it, I'll be looking into Florian's food...
Also, Trader Joe's brand is supposed to be really good and corn free...so I may have to check there too.
Thanks ya'll for the suggestions! | |
